Message from our Principal
Dear Lafayette Families -
This week we find ourselves in the throes of the Book Fair and National Computer Science Week! Thank you to Mr. Wieand for organizing Saturday's kickoff event - Cookies and Coding! It was awesome to see teachers (Ms. Campbell, Mr. King, Mr. Gregal, Ms. Mesghenna and Mr. Wieand) and so many parents and students exploring coding activities at code.org, unplugged coding activities and Sphero robots. Thank you also to all the volunteers who helped out! We will hold our school wide "Hour of Code" on Friday, December 9.
This past weekend our band also represented Lafayette very well! They participated in a tree lighting ceremony at Cathedral Commons on Wisconsin Avenue. We can also look forward to hearing them in action at the upcoming Winter Concert. The
Winter Concert will be December 20
at 1:45 pm and 6:30 pm.
Make sure to check out the Book Fair this week. Ms. Leese and a cadre of volunteers have worked to set up an incredible Book Fair that will be open all week. Every class will visit the book fair. If you need it, the schedule of when classes are visiting the fair, it is posted on the website. Thank you in advance to the volunteers who keep the fair running smoothly!
Last week we hosted Principal Albright from Deal Middle School and a handful of Lafayette alums who spoke to our 5
grade class about articulating to Deal. This week we will send our 5
graders to Deal for "Buddy Day" on Wednesday afternoon. We appreciate Deal for helping our students and families learn more about middle school, experience a "day in the life of..." and answer questions about the next step in their education.
In other news, we have been notified that there will be some potential changes to our nursing situation. Nurse Cockrell works for an agency that contracts with Children's School Services. She was notified late last week that the agency's contract would not be renewed with Children's. Therefore, she has applied to Children's School Services, but we will not know the outcome of her application or her assignment until further into December. While we continue to be allocated 40 hours per week of nursing services, I am not sure who will be providing those services beginning in January. As I know more information, I will keep the community up to date.
In better news, our gym is (almost) finished and is open for business! The floor looks amazing and is being used by classes and the basketball teams. We are still waiting for a few last items to be installed (archery net, etc), but we are incredibly thankful to have the gym for instructional space. This week we will also host our very first home girls and boys basketball games on Thursday, December 8. We will host Eaton Elementary School beginning at 4 pm. We hope to see you there! We also wish the teams luck at their first game of the season on Tuesday, December 6 at Janney.
As we quickly countdown the days to the Winter Break, be on the look out for "We Are Lafayette" lunchtime assemblies celebrating our inclusivity and diversity, the Winter Concert (12/20), the Ward 4 Holiday Party hosted at Lafayette (12/10 @ 6 pm), and classroom Winter Parties (12/20). As the winter holidays approach and the busy-ness of the season floods our calendars, don't forget to stop and take time to appreciate the spirit of the season and the specialness of those around you.
