ABOUT THE CELEBRATION
The Laguna Beach Cultural Arts Center proudly presents its Fifth Annual Juneteenth Celebration, a weekend of music, art, film, and community honoring freedom, resilience, creativity, and the enduring cultural contributions of African American artists and voices.
Juneteenth commemorates the moment in 1865 when the last enslaved African Americans in Texas were finally informed of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been signed. Over time, Juneteenth has grown into something even larger: a celebration of freedom itself, the dignity of the human spirit, and the belief that humanity moves forward together when justice, equality, understanding, and opportunity expand for everyone.
Now in its fifth year, Laguna Beach's Juneteenth celebration continues to grow as a meaningful cultural tradition centered not only on remembrance and education, but also on music, artistic expression, dialogue, and community connection.
This year's celebration begins with a special Juneteenth-themed exhibition featuring artists Allison Allen and Thomas Finn. Allen's work explores themes of identity, culture, and the shared human experience through a vibrant visual language. Finn, originally from Ghana, West Africa, brings a perspective shaped by African heritage, storytelling, and community traditions. Together, their artwork creates a powerful visual companion to the weekend's music, film, and conversation. The exhibition is included with all Juneteenth events and will be on display throughout the celebration.
The weekend's featured musical event is a special Juneteenth edition of LBCAC's acclaimed Blues Legends Series featuring internationally celebrated Chicago blues artist Toronzo Cannon and his band on Friday, June 19. Widely regarded as one of the most powerful and authentic voices in contemporary blues, Cannon delivers an unforgettable evening of soul, storytelling, musicianship, and electrifying live performance. His music reflects both the struggles and triumphs that have shaped the blues tradition, making him a fitting artist to headline this year's celebration.
The celebration concludes on Sunday, June 21, with a screening of the Academy Award-winning documentary Summer of Soul. Directed by Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson, the film chronicles the landmark 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival and features unforgettable performances by Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, Mahalia Jackson, Sly and the Family Stone, and many others. More than a concert film, Summer of Soul is a powerful reflection on music, culture, history, and community.
Together, these events celebrate freedom through music, visual art, film, history, and conversation while recognizing that dignity, creativity, compassion, and cultural understanding are values that belong to all humanity.
From world-class blues and inspiring visual art to an extraordinary film that celebrates an important chapter of American cultural history, Laguna Beach's Fifth Annual Juneteenth Celebration invites audiences to experience freedom, creativity, and the power of the arts to bring people together.
