FIRST GRADERS HONOR INDIGENOUS PEOPLES' DAY

Last Thursday, first graders created “Ojo De Dios” crafts with help from Olive (a fourth grader), families, and first grade room moms. The idea for this indigenous craft came from former first grade student Olive. The project integrated Spanish and involved Upper School students last year, evolving into a family event this year. Thank you to all who participated!

The students learned about Indigenous peoples of the Santa Barbara area and the Huichol tribe in Mexico. These woven crafts are traditionally made as gifts for children, symbolizing health, longevity, and protection. The father weaves the central eye at a child's birth, adding a color each year until the child turns five. This holiday tradition is popular in the Southwest and among other Native American tribes.

BUILDING BRIDGES AT THE FIRST MENTOR LUNCH OF THE YEAR

Last week, we kicked off our first Mentor Lunch with Middle and Upper School students. Our Middle Schoolers enjoyed a sunny, picnic-style lunch with their mentors from Grades 10-12. This program builds connections across divisions, with mentors who are active in athletics, theater, community service, student council, club leadership, TEDx and more! We're so grateful for these mentors and excited for our Middle Schoolers to have such incredible role models to look up to!

CELEBRATING THIRTY YEARS OF THE FOURTH ESTATE

This year, Laguna Blanca’s award-winning publication, The Fourth Estate, proudly celebrates 30 years of student journalism and creative expression! To kick off the celebration, four alumni from the classes of 1995 and 1996 joined our journalism class this week to share memories of meticulously laying out issues by hand, developing film in the dark room, and driving the final proof to the printer. Today, The Fourth Estate thrives with a new magazine-style layout, a website, and a social media presence. Through it all, beloved advisor Trish McHale has remained a constant guide.

Thank you to Allegra Pollock Brandano ’96, Stephen Sobhani ’96, Jason Eldred ’95, and Kristen Blabey ’95 for sharing your stories. Here’s to 30 more years!

AP ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE CLASS TRAVELS TO SANTA CRUZ ISLAND

This week, the AP Environmental Science class embarked on a service learning trip to Santa Cruz Island. While there, students learned about the island’s unique ecology and also helped water baby oak trees in a process of island restoration with The Nature Conservancy.

The Laguna community is invited to attend our Grades 7-12 Laurel Canyon Fall Concert on November 7! Performances will be inspired by LA’s Laurel Canyon neighborhood music scene during the 1960s and 1970s. Students from Vocal Ensemble, Honors Stage Band, and Pop and Rock Ensemble will be our performers. We hope to see you there!

TONIGHT! OWLS NIGHT OUT FOR THE FAMILY ASSOCIATION

Grab take-out or have dinner at Lucky Penny tonight, 10/24 between 4-9PM and they will donate 10% of the proceeds to the LB Family Association (be sure to mention Laguna Blanca!) Anyone can participate—parents, students, and friends!

PARENT VOLUNTEERS MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE

A huge thank you to all the amazing parents who volunteered to make the Family Festival so special for all the students. We could not have done it without YOU and we love seeing our community come together! Keep an eye out for future fun volunteer opportunities. Your support goes a long way.

LUZ SCHUBERT '25 WINS TRI-VALLEY LEAGUE GIRLS GOLF TITLE

Laguna Blanca girls golf’s Luz Schubert captured the individual Tri-Valley League title last week.

With the win, Luz was named the Tri-Valley League Player of the Year.

Luz represented the Owls well by shooting a 73 over 18 holes, which was an even-par performance in the tournament. Her showing allowed her to run away from the rest of the field, as the second-place golfer was seven strokes behind her.

Luz will now advance to the CIF-SS Individual Regionals next Wednesday at Los Robles Golf Course in Thousand Oaks.

Go, Luz, go!

HOMECOMING 2024

Our annual Homecoming football game was filled with big Owl pride as student fans and parents from both campuses cheered on the Owls! At half-time Swoop, the new LBS cheer squad, Lower School students and friends ran across the field to show their spirit! Our small but mighty team fought hard and had fun!
