TEDxLagunaBlancaSchool
Beneath the Surface
2.2.22

Produced entirely by high school students, TEDxLagunaBlancaSchool is a day-long conference where incredible people come together to share their ideas. The fourth annual event promises its attendees a chance to dive deeper into what we already know and challenge ourselves to reach below the surface level of emotion, thought, and understanding. Pioneered by 24 students, 3 faculty advisors, and with the support of many speakers and sponsors, this event will be delivered on February 2, 2022.

At this time we are only selling live stream tickets; however, if conditions improve so that we can safely sell a limited amount of in-person tickets we will do so at a later time. If you have already purchased a live stream ticket and in-person tickets become available, you will be allowed to upgrade your ticket if desired.

"Beneath the Surface" is being produced and shared with the entire LBS student body, faculty and staff, and event sponsors. For those in our greater community, we generously ask that you purchase a live stream ticket ($25) to be able to join us on our exciting event day, as well as support the creation of TEDxLagunaBlancaSchool. 100% of ticket proceeds go toward the production of the event including design materials, rentals, audio/visual, and other supplies to make the event fabulous for our audience! Thank you for your support, especially during these difficult times.
SAFETY PROTOCOL UPDATES
TESTING
We encourage all families to utilize testing services through Aptitude at Earl Warren Showgrounds whenever required by the school or when you feel it would be a good idea to be tested. Laguna Blanca students test for free through this service.

If you haven’t registered your child yet, you may do so in person when you arrive for testing. Delays can be shortened by pre-registering.

While we realize this may be an inconvenient step for your family, receiving accurate, streamlined test results in a timely manner is advantageous for our COVID team and benefit our community as a whole.

If you are not able to test through Aptitude, we still require PCR-level tests.

Due to the current increase in COVID-19 cases, Aptitude test results will now be generally available at midnight instead of 9PM on the date tested if submitted by the cut-off time (2:30PM for Santa Barbara site). The samples collected after the cut-off time will yield results by 2PM the next day.

FREE COVID-19 HOME TESTS AVAILABLE
The U.S. Postal Service has made it possible to order four free at-home COVID-19 tests per address. The tests are completely free and should ship within 7 to 12 days. Ordering is simple. Please click here.

MASKING
To reduce the need for close contacts to quarantine and keep students safely in school, we now require masks to be worn indoors and outdoors. KN95 or N95 masks are preferred. The federal government will provide a limited supply of free N95 masks that should be available by early February at pharmacies and community health centers.

SAVE THE DATE
MONDAY, JANUARY 24 | 6-7PM

Laguna Blanca strives to be a safe and inclusive space for all students. To help our families feel confident and informed around conversations regarding gender and sexuality, we are hosting a special evening on Zoom with Pacific Pride Foundation. Community Educator Keilani Garcia (she/her) will lead a presentation on the vocabulary and best practices needed to understand and welcome people of all sexualities and genders. The talk will cover gender identity and romantic/sexual orientation, as well as provide the tools to support youth in their lives and in conversations around coming out. A Q&A will conclude the evening.

While the talk is geared toward parents, students are welcome to attend.

If you would like to listen to this conversation but need a Spanish interpreter, please contact Ursula Chan.

This fully-staged musical theatre performance at the Marjorie Luke Theatre takes place on Thursday, February 3 at 7PM, Friday, February 4 at 7PM, and Saturday, February 5 at 1PM and 7PM. Read on about these Owls and their roles in the show.
Katherine Ball ’23 (Bea) is thrilled to perform again with Lights Up this year. She recently played Mother Abbess in Light’s Up Sound of Music and Antonia and Anselmo in Lights Up’s filmed performance of Man of La Mancha. Some of her other favorite roles include The Witch in Big Fish, Psyche in Cupid and Psyche with Boxtales Theatre Company, and Cosette in Les Misérables. In her free time, she enjoys reading, playing tennis, and wishing the weather was foggier.
Ada Green ’25 (Francis Flute) is a theater kid of eight years, Ada loves to sing, read, and play viola and guitar. Favorite past performances include The Sound of Music, All in the Timing, The Music Man, Twelfth Night, Les Miserables, and Ruthless! This is her third year with Lights Up!
Noah Olorin '24 (Nick)
has been a passionate actor since age seven, where he exuberantly participated in The Little Mermaid with Boxtales Theater Company. Since then, he has started singing, writing, playing guitar and piano, running, and doing handstands. He has performed with LightsUp! in Big Fish, The Music Man, Man of La Mancha, The Sound of Music, and Twelfth Night. His joy for acting shines when he is laughing with fellow company members, learning choreography (tap dancing!), or even just testing mics; he has found a second home in the theater.

O.W.L. TEACHER HIGHLIGHTS
Below are the three teachers featured in this week's O.W.L (Our Weekly Learning) Post by Director of Teaching and Learning Anna Alldredge!
Second Grade Teacher Reagan Anderson incorporates creative ELA lesson designs into her classroom. Reagan and fellow second grade teacher Lisa Vance immersed their students in a delicious Language Arts sorting activity: "Synonym Rolls!"
Middle School PE Teacher Andra Wilson embeds communication skills across her curriculum. Andra cleverly incorporates both oral and written communication skills development into her physical education classes.
Upper School Social Science Instructor Meghan Roarty incorporates mastery assessments in her classes. Meghan uses low-stakes and high-retention assessments to boost skill acquisition, all while reducing test anxiety.
U.S. NAVY OFFICERS GUEST LECTURE IN MIDDLE AND UPPER SCHOOL SCIENCE CLASSES
U.S. Navy officers who work aboard the USS California, stationed in Groton, CT, paid a special visit to Laguna's Science Research Program and Middle School engineering classes on Tuesday, 1/18.

The submarine's Commanding Officer, CDR James Henry, USN, and five of his crew members gave an insightful presentation in the new Mosher Foundation Outdoor Classroom. This was a "namesake" visit for the crew as their submarine is named after our state.

The crew members provided a fascinating overview of life onboard a nuclear-powered submarine, which brought to light the many different aspects of the mathematics and science disciplines utilized in operating the vessel.

Thank you to this dedicated crew for illuminating real-world applications of the principles our students are learning in class!
LS STUDENT COUNCIL MEMBERS DEVELOP VALUABLE LEADERSHIP SKILLS
Our dedicated Lower School Student Council leaders did an amazing job designing and planning meaningful community engagement, both on and off-campus, over the last two months.

The fourth graders partnered with our Upper School Student Council and our Sock Club student leaders to organize Laguna’s annual Warm Things Drive for SB community members in need.

They also worked hard to draft and finalize a Lower School cheer! They introduced this cheer to the whole Lower School community earlier this week at Tecolote Tuesday and will take the stage to lead their classmates in this cheer each week.

In addition, they have worked with Dr. Surber to help coordinate the birthday announcements each week during Tecolote Tuesday.

Bravo to 2nd Term Student Council Leaders Blake, Charlie, Kanu, Lindsay, and Morgan!
AVOID SAN YSIDRO OFF-RAMP DELAYS
When the southbound off-ramp at Sheffield Drive reopened on January 18, flagging to direct traffic at the intersections of San Ysidro Road and the freeway ceased during the morning peak periods. Cars continue to use San Ysidro Road as a detour, not realizing the Sheffield Drive off-ramp is open again. As a result, traffic has been backed up onto the freeway during this heavy commute time.

To ensure your child arrives at school on time, Lower School families should plan to leave for school earlier than usual or take another route until traffic flow returns to normal.

Thank you!

ATHLETIC COVID REGULATIONS
WEEKLY TIP FROM DIRECTOR OF COLLEGE COUNSELING MATT STRUCKMEYER
Does individual attention matter to you? Are you a hands-on, project-based learner? Can you multitask, or are you better at taking a deep dive on one thing at a time? All these questions should guide the college search because selectivity or prestige isn’t about fit. Ask yourself these questions. Then ask your counselor: "what colleges are best for a person who learns like me?"
DUKE PRE-COLLEGE VIRTUAL FAIR IS THIS SATURDAY, JANUARY 22
