TEDxLBS 2022 TICKETS ARE NOW LIVE!
TEDxLagunaBlancaSchool
Beneath the Surface
2.2.22

Produced entirely by high school students, TEDxLagunaBlancaSchool is a day-long conference where incredible people come together to share their ideas. The fourth annual event promises its attendees a chance to dive deeper into what we already know and challenge ourselves to reach below the surface level of emotion, thought, and understanding. Pioneered by 24 students, 3 faculty advisors, and with the support of many speakers and sponsors, this event will be delivered on February 2, 2022.

At this time we are only selling live stream tickets; however, if conditions improve so that we can safely sell a limited amount of in-person tickets we will do so at a later time. If you have already purchased a live stream ticket and in-person tickets become available, you will be allowed to upgrade your ticket if desired.

"Beneath the Surface" is being produced and shared with the entire LBS student body, faculty and staff, and event sponsors. For those in our greater community, we generously ask that you purchase a live stream ticket ($25) to be able to join us on our exciting event day, as well as support the creation of TEDxLagunaBlancaSchool. 100% of ticket proceeds go toward the production of the event including design materials, rentals, audio/visual, and other supplies to make the event fabulous for our audience! Thank you for your support, especially during these difficult times.
COVID PROTOCOL UPDATES
TESTING
We encourage all families to utilize testing services through Aptitude at Earl Warren Showgrounds whenever required by the school or when you feel it would be a good idea to be tested. Laguna Blanca students test for free through this service.

If you haven’t registered your child yet, you may do so in person when you arrive for testing. Delays can be shortened by pre-registering.

While we realize this may be an inconvenient step for your family, receiving accurate, streamlined test results in a timely manner is advantageous for our COVID team and benefit our community as a whole.

If you are not able to test through Aptitude, we still require PCR-level tests.

Please note that MLK Day hours are from 9AM-2PM. Normal, non-holiday hours are 9AM-5PM Monday - Friday and 9AM - 2PM Saturday and Sunday.

Due to the current increase in COVID-19 cases, Aptitude test results will now be generally available at midnight instead of 9PM on the date tested if submitted by the cut-off time (2:30PM for Santa Barbara site). The samples collected after the cut-off time will yield results by 2PM the next day.

MASKING
To reduce the need for close contacts to quarantine and keep students safely in school, we will now require masks to be worn indoors and outdoors. KN95 masks are preferred.

COVID SYMPTOM MONITORING
Thank you for monitoring your child for the following COVID-like symptoms and swiftly reporting positive COVID test results to our Health Coordinator Matt Miller. Contact your healthcare provider if you have any additional medical questions.

•      Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing

O.W.L. TEACHER HIGHLIGHTS
Below are the three teachers featured in this week's O.W.L (Our Weekly Learning) Post by Director of Teaching and Learning Anna Alldredge!
Early Kindergarten Teacher Mary Surber incorporates magic boards into her lessons. Mary’s EK students use magic boards to practice lettering, which increases retention and engagement.
Fifth Grade Teacher Jennifer Carney weaves BrainPOP into her direct instruction. Jennifer uses this play-based platform to help students evaluate credible sources.
Dean of Students and English Instructor Blake Dorfman uses project-based learning in his Yearbook class. This class operates like a mini-business, acquiring real-world skills via their mega-group project: our 2021-22 Laguna yearbook!
ART TEACHER DUG UYESAKA NAMED SANTA BARBARA ARTS COLLABORATIVE BOARD MEMBER
Middle and Upper School Art Teacher Dug Uyesaka has recently accepted a nomination to be a board member of the Santa Barbara Community Arts Collaborative. This special organization is a homegrown community-based non-profit that promotes, nurtures, and funds art-related outreach, workspace, artists, and projects in the Santa Barbara area. "I am honored to be part of this organization and hope to enrich its program in the years to come," says Dug.

Thank you, Mr. Uyesaka, for serving the Santa Barbara community!
SIXTH GRADE GETS CREATIVE WITH SHELTER ART PROJECT
Sixth grade students recently completed a colorful shelter art project in Mr. Uyesaka's class. The project ties into early civilization studies in Ms. Armstrong's class in which topics such as migration, shelter, and culture were explored. The students were tasked with designing and creating a ceramic "shelter" from their imagination and to also create an accordion book with an illustration and a poem or short story related to their object. All pieces are currently on display in the library!
IN SEARCH OF MIRRORS AND PICTURE FRAMES
Laguna’s Student Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee is in search of old mirrors and pictureless picture frames for their exciting TEDxLaguna booth this year. If you have any mirrors and picture frames you’re willing to part with, please bring them to campus. Any size and style appreciated!

Lower School: Please drop off with a faculty member during carline, or leave with Darla in the front office.

Hope Ranch: Please drop off at the main office.

Donations are needed by January 31.

Thank you! If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Chan, DEI Coordinator.
DRAIN WORK ON PALOMA DRIVE SCHEDULED FOR NEXT WEEK
Hope Ranch will be replacing the drain at Las Palmas and Paloma next week. It will not require closing the road, but expect delays and please follow guidance from the traffic controllers.
LOCALLY GROWN KIDS LUNCH ORDER REMINDER
Parents, please remember to cancel your child's Locally Grown Kids lunch order if they are absent from school. The deadline to cancel an order with LGK is 5PM prior to the day of absence. Please email [email protected].

Thank you!
SAN YSIDRO OFF-RAMP CONSTRUCTION UPDATE
When the southbound off-ramp at Sheffield Drive reopens on January 18, flagging to direct traffic at the intersections of San Ysidro Road and the freeway will cease during the morning peak periods. The flaggers have been on-site to help direct the extra traffic associated with the Sheffield off-ramp detour as it routes people to exit southbound at San Ysidro Road. With the detour complete, we will not have the added traffic routed to the southbound off-ramp at San Ysidro Road.
GR. 4 & 5 CO-ED VOLLEYBALL SEASON BEGINS SOON!
