SAFETY PROTOCOL UPDATES
LAGUNA’S INDOOR MASKING UPDATE
Effective Monday, March 14, we will adjust Laguna’s masking policy per Santa Barbara County Public Health Department guidance and no longer require indoor masking regardless of vaccination status. We recognize that each household’s health circumstances and comfort level varies, and we will support each family’s decision regarding wearing masks in school. We also expect all members of our community to respect others’ choices. Please note: students and staff should continue bringing a face mask with them each day in the event that masking should be required.

DAILY WELLNESS CHECK UPDATE
Students will no longer require a QR code for entry into school beginning on Monday, March 14. While the use of our daily wellness check via the Ruvna app will be discontinued, we encourage each family to continue monitoring symptoms and staying home from school/getting tested when sick—even with minor cold or allergy symptoms.

PARENTS/GUESTS ON CAMPUS
The Lower School campus will be open to families starting next week, beginning on March 8 for Tecolote Tuesday assembly and lunch service.

Families and guests continue to be invited to our Hope Ranch campus for volunteer opportunities. Parent volunteers are no longer required to wear masks while serving lunch. And best of all, families will again be invited to attend upcoming celebrations such as the Cum Laude Induction Ceremony in April.

Protocols regarding COVID symptoms, infections, and quarantining remain unchanged. Thank you for swiftly reporting positive COVID test results to [email protected].

TESTING
We encourage all families to utilize the free testing services through Aptitude at Earl Warren Showgrounds. Aptitude test results will now be available at 9PM on the date tested if submitted by the cut-off time (2:30PM for Santa Barbara site). The samples collected after the cut-off time will yield results by 2PM the next day.

If you are not able to test through Aptitude, we still require PCR-level tests.

COVID SYMPTOM MONITORING
Thank you for monitoring your child for the following COVID-like symptoms and swiftly reporting positive COVID test results to [email protected].

•      Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing

UPPER SCHOOL ENGINEERING STUDENTS COMPETE IN SB ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN CHALLENGE
Every spring, an all-day design competition fashioned after the Architects Learning Exam is held for Santa Barbara County High School students. The Architectural Foundation of Santa Barbara's High School Design Competition began in 1991 and introduces high school students to the world of architecture and the design process through the frame of a fun learning experience.

On March 2, nine Laguna Upper School engineering students competed in a one-day charette with 50 total competitors. By the end of the day, each student designed a solution to student housing for a large university campus between the mountains and the beach with a small airport nearby.

WATCH THE LIKE DINNER & DISCUSSION EVENT RECORDING WITH DOREEN DODGEN-MAGEE
Thank you to all the families who joined us on Tuesday night for Dinner & Discussion with Doreen Dodgen-Magee. We were able to hear Doreen’s response to the film, LIKE, and learn about a mindful approach to technology, social media, and screens of all kinds with a longer perspective in mind. With over 28 years of experience in the field of mental health and the author of two books on the topic, Deviced! and Restart, Doreen shared with empathy and experience the ways we can counter the loneliness, neurological pruning, social anxiety, and avoidance of big feelings in order to better align our relationship with technology that matches our values. We are so excited to share a recording of Tuesday night’s session with you. It’s an hour full of compassion, information, and practical tips that can be applied instantly. If we missed you on Tuesday night, we hope you’ll take the time to watch the recording.

A huge thank you to the Parents' Auxiliary for making this event possible and bringing LIKE and Dr. Dodgen-Magee to our Laguna family.

LAGUNA'S EK-12 CURRICULUM GUIDE IS NOW LIVE
A curriculum guide is intended to be a “one-stop shop” where one can get a sense of our EK-12 programs and our curriculum.

This resource also outlines the course of study for each division (how students can chart pathways, make choices, and fulfill grad requirements at Laguna).

This can be another useful tool in the registration process for families.

You can find the guide linked on the resource boards as well as our academics page and curriculum webpages for each division.
MELISSA ALKIRE AND ANNA ALLDREDGE EARN HARVARD GRADUATE SCHOOL CERTIFICATES
Head of Upper School Melissa Alkire and Director of Teaching and Learning Anna Alldredge both recently completed a Graduate Certificate in School Management and Leadership from Harvard.

The Certificate in School Management and Leadership (CSML), a multi-course certificate program for PreK-12 school leaders, is an innovative collaboration between the Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE) and Harvard Business School (HBS). Bridging the fields of business and education, CSML integrates expertise in managing teams and organizations with best practices in educational leadership to provide school leaders with frameworks, skills, and knowledge to effectively lead and drive improvement in schools.

"It was such a cool coincidence when we realized we had both independently enrolled in this program together," says Anna. "It’s been wonderful to share in this professional learning experience together."

Congratulations, Anna and Melissa!

CELEBRATE WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH
A note from Ursula Chan and Anna Alldredge

A great way to celebrate and acknowledge Women’s History Month is by reading literature with meaningful and diverse representations of women. We are intentional with our choices to feature stories of women and girls of different ages, ethnicities, races, classes, historical moments, and passions.

While we only choose four books to introduce to our libraries, we have so many more stories for our students to explore. Just ask the librarian! We hope you can either check out these stories from our school libraries or purchase them and add them to your own library. Diversifying our libraries and literature is important when we are learning about the world we live in, where we come from, and the different people and cultures we will interact with.

Happy reading!

LOWER SCHOOL STUDENTS ARE 100 DAYS SMARTER!
On March 1, Lower School celebrated our students being 100 days smarter and wiser! Students showed their creativity with the wide variety of “100” collections. Many thanks to Amanda Koper, Lower School Parents’ Auxiliary representative, who made sure we had delicious cupcakes for our celebration! She also found an allergen-free bakery that made special cupcakes for our students with food allergies!
WELCOME BACK TO CAMPUS, PARENTS!
Beginning Tuesday, March 8, parents are invited to be on the Lower School campus again. Park and join us for our Tecolote Tuesday gathering each week (8:20AM), and check with the Parents’ Auxiliary for on-campus volunteer opportunities.

Please note that the Lower School has limited parking. Spaces in the back parking lot are reserved for faculty and staff. Use the front parking lot (facing the fence) or park on neighboring streets Wyant and Sinaloa after you drop off your child.

Masks are not required outdoors, but have one ready in the event that masking is required. We look forward to seeing you!

Amelia Fowler '22 and Sarah Woodhouse '24 won 22-20, 21-18, while Fiona Hernandez '23 and Natalie Bianchi '24 pulled out a 23-21, 21-18 win.

"The matches from my twos and threes were a little too close for comfort for me, but I’m glad we pulled out the sweep," said coach Jenny Sims.

DOUBLES CARRY LAGUNA BLANCA TO TENNIS WIN AGAINST MALIBU
By Barry Punzal, Noozhawk Sports Editor

Laguna Blanca edged Malibu, 9-8. in a non-league boys tennis match on Wednesday.

The match ran into daylight issues as the final singles set between Laguna junior Aden Meisel '23 and Malibu's No. 1 player couldn't be completed.

The strength of Laguna’s doubles play had already ensured a victory on total games. The Owls had a 14-game edge (76-62) with Malibu only capable of scoring an additional three games in the remaining set.

The junior/sophomore combo of Cody Busch-Weiss '23 and Jake Gidney '24 finished 3-0 and dropped just three games for the Owls (2-0).

Malibu dominated singles, winning seven of eight sets.

Laguna is scheduled to play Santa Barbara High at home on Friday at 3PM.
TIP FROM THE COLLEGE COUNSELOR
In this new era of college admissions—one where most colleges will remain test-optional—Early Decision is more important than ever. When a student makes a binding commitment to enroll if accepted, a college has a much stronger incentive to admit a qualified applicant—that is, one who is “on profile” with past applicants. But here’s the catch: ED requires much more research on the front end! A student must be certain that the college is right for them, because there’s no backing out if admitted. On the upside, acceptance is much easier to predict, and a student knows their fate by winter break. Consider it carefully!
