TEDxLBS 2022 IS NEXT WEEK! HAVE YOU PURCHASED YOUR LIVE STREAM TICKET YET?
Produced entirely by high school students, TEDxLagunaBlancaSchool is a day-long conference where incredible people come together to share their ideas. The fourth annual event promises its attendees a chance to dive deeper into what we already know and challenge ourselves to reach below the surface level of emotion, thought, and understanding. Pioneered by 24 students, 3 faculty advisors, and with the support of many speakers and sponsors, this event will be delivered on February 2, 2022.

"Beneath the Surface" is being shared with the entire LBS student body, faculty and staff, and event sponsors. For those in our greater community, we generously ask that you purchase a live stream ticket ($25) to be able to join us on our exciting event day, as well as support the creation of TEDxLagunaBlancaSchool. 100% of ticket proceeds go toward the production of the event including design materials, rentals, audio/visual, and other supplies to make the event fabulous for our audience! Thank you for your support, especially during these difficult times.
SAFETY PROTOCOL UPDATES
TESTING
We encourage all families to utilize testing services through Aptitude at Earl Warren Showgrounds whenever required by the school or when you feel it would be a good idea to be tested. Laguna Blanca students test for free through this service.

If you haven’t registered your child yet, you may do so in person when you arrive for testing. Delays can be shortened by pre-registering.

While we realize this may be an inconvenient step for your family, receiving accurate, streamlined test results in a timely manner is advantageous for our COVID team and benefit our community as a whole.

If you are not able to test through Aptitude, we still require PCR-level tests.

Due to the current increase in COVID-19 cases, Aptitude test results will now be generally available at midnight instead of 9PM on the date tested if submitted by the cut-off time (2:30PM for Santa Barbara site). The samples collected after the cut-off time will yield results by 2PM the next day.

FREE COVID-19 HOME TESTS AVAILABLE
The U.S. Postal Service has made it possible to order four free at-home COVID-19 tests per address. The tests are completely free and should ship within 7 to 12 days. Ordering is simple. Please click here.

MASKING
We are closely monitoring our COVID data on campus and in the larger Santa Barbara community. We are encouraged by what we are seeing on campus, but recognize that the numbers in Santa Barbara remain high. Therefore, we will continue with our current indoor and outdoor masking policy at this time.

COVID SYMPTOM MONITORING
Thank you for monitoring your child for the following COVID-like symptoms and swiftly reporting positive COVID test results to [email protected]. Contact your healthcare provider if you have any additional medical questions.

BLAST OFF! EIGHTH GRADERS EMBARK ON MISSION TO MARS
For eighth grade students, the second quarter focuses on a real-world challenge that unifies their English, history, and science lessons. First, their teachers posed big questions: What is our mission as a species? What is your quest? What endures about cultures over time? How does humanity endure?

As students pondered the human elements of these questions, they were asked to begin planning a team-based Mission to Mars. They grappled with scarce resources, psychological challenges, and communications problems.

Today, 1/27, each team presented its mission overview to a squad of “investors” composed of administration, faculty, and other students, all of whom posed challenges to the team. Students channeled their knowledge of science, human history, and human creativity to achieve our species’ path towards becoming interplanetary.

Over the course of the unit, they built out a 30-minute presentation, a company website, a company video, and individual speeches. They also have a variety of assignments in each of their courses that tie in with the overall theme of the Mars Mission.

Stay tuned for the announcement of the winning team. Well done, eighth graders!
We are looking forward to celebrating all our Grandfriends on March 10! O.W.L. TEACHER HIGHLIGHTS
Below are the three teachers featured in this week's O.W.L (Our Weekly Learning) Post by Director of Teaching and Learning Anna Alldredge!
Lower School Library Teacher Jennifer Riley connects literacy skills with Laguna's social sciences curriculum. Jennifer expertly combines library curriculum with civics and history lessons across grade levels.
Middle and Upper School STEM Teacher John Pagano incorporates music into his engineering classes. John’s MS Engineering students designed and built their own original instruments, which they played in a performance at this week's assembly!
Upper School Social Science Instructor Al Silva brings outside experts into classes across campus. Al builds bridges into our community by connecting with local leaders to workshop with his Comparative Religions students.
CELEBRATE BLACK HISTORY HERITAGE MONTH
A great way to celebrate and acknowledge Black History Month is by reading literature with Black representation and learning about some notable Black people.

DEI Coordinator Ursula Chan and Director of Teaching and Learning Anna Alldredge have chosen four books to recommend for each division. They hope you can either check them out from our school library or purchase them and add them to your own library. Diversifying our libraries and literature is important when we are learning about the world we live in, where we come from, and the different people and cultures we will interact with.

Below are links to Chaucer’s Books and Amazon.

FOURTH GRADERS SHOWCASE READING AND WRITING SKILLS IN POEM UNIT
Fourth grade students recently completed a poetry unit in which they enjoyed reading and analyzing a variety of poems. Students worked on syllabication, parts of speech, and carefully selecting words to paint vivid mental pictures with their poems. The fourth graders wrote nature poems (while sitting outside), haiku, cinquain (an American poetry form), and diamante poems. Finally, they published their works using their cursive handwriting skills!

LAGUNA BLANCA'S ADEN MEISEL SCORES HAT TRICK FOR 4-3 OT WIN OVER VILLANOVA
By Dennis Moran, Noozhawk Correspondent

Aden Meisel '23 had a hat trick — including what turned out to be the winning goal in the second overtime — to lead Laguna Blanca to a 4-3 Frontier League win over visiting Villanova on Tuesday, 1/25.

Villanova scored first, “directly off the opening whistle,” Laguna coach Kevin Shertzer said, bringing the ball down the side and scoring off a low cross.

“They caught us still in our warmup, but we responded well and took control of the game,” Shertzer said.

At the 20 minute mark, Meisel scored on a long kick from Owls goalkeeper Henry Otte '22. Ten minutes later, Meisel scored his second goal on an assist from Josh Hansen '24, for a 2-1 Laguna halftime lead.

Villanova scored the equalizer in the 25th minute of the second half after Otte parried two short-range shots before the third found the net.

The 2-2 tie carried into a second overtime when the Owls’ Mason Berg '24 quickly scored on a long-distance shot and Meisel completed his hat trick for a 4-2 lead.

WEEKLY TIP FROM DIRECTOR OF COLLEGE COUNSELING MATT STRUCKMEYER
Consider using the summer to make yourself a more interesting applicant by going beyond the usual metrics of GPA and common activities. Explore a course in something not offered at your school (e.g. neuroscience, comparative literature, Middle Eastern history). The goal is to develop and display genuine intellectual curiosity, and a summer program can help with that.

Give your high school student’s college application a boost by enrolling them in Johns Hopkins' challenging and engaging summer engineering program.
