Robert A. Rivas is second-year Dental Hygiene student at College of Lake County.
Why did you pursue Dental Hygiene?
What attracted me towards the profession of Dental Hygiene is the fact that hygienists have the opportunity to positively impact people everyday. I enjoy working one on one with patients and educating them on ways to improve their oral health. I believe that although someone may forget your name, they won’t forget how you made them feel. This is why I take pride in providing the highest level of care while making
sure my patients feel safe and considered. The most rewarding aspect of dental hygiene to me, is helping someone become more confident in their smile.
What lesson has the pandemic (Covid) taught you?
Since the pandemic began, I have learned to better adapt to obstacles that arise in my life. I was always someone that enjoyed the comfort in knowing what to expect next, but the pandemic has helped me become comfortable with changes as well. I have been able to apply this to many aspects of my life but most importantly, to patient care. Being able to adapt on the go is extremely important because every patient is different and everyone must be treated individually.
What do you like to do in your free time?
In my free time I enjoy spending time with my family, exercising, and going to sporting events. My favorite sport is soccer so any chance I get to play or go to a live game, I take it. I also enjoy going to the movies with my family and friends.
Future in Dental Hygiene?
In my future I see myself advancing my career, whether it is by furthering my education in dental hygiene or by taking an alternative route. I strive to be a lifelong learner and continue to grow.
