History of the National Parks Service
Speaker: Robert Valen

Program Sponsor: Lew Clark
Bob Valen retired from the National Parks Service in 2003 after working on assignments in national parks in Texas, California, Wyoming and South Dakota, primarily managing park-wide visitor services and interpretative operations. He is currently serving as Commissioner-Treasurer for the Coulee Area Park and Recreation District and is a current member and past President of the Coulee Dam Area Rotary Club. Come hear about Bob's experiences and the history of our National Parks Service.
Rotarians at Work on the Three Fingers Trail Cleanup
Work on clearing the Three Fingers Trail on the south shore commenced on August 18 despite smoky air conditions. With help from donated machinery and the numerous Rotarians who showed up to clear the trail of brush, the community service teams were able to complete the job in one day. Thank you to all who participated.
Fire Emergency Preparedness
The Chumstick Wildfire Stewardship Coalition has a website that is an excellent resource for preparing your family, home and business in advance of a wildfire, as well as what to do if a fire happens in your community. There are also numerous links for signing up for alerts, contacting various government agencies, and useful checklists. To learn more, go to:

Thank you to Rotarian Concie Luna for sharing this timely information.
A Little Smoke Humor
The smoke and fire that Washington State, British Columbia and much of the west coast is experiencing isn't funny. But a Facebook event titled, "Throw rocks at the smoke to make it go away" kind of is. As of August 22, there were 40 thousand people who said they were attending (although the location is listed as " pretty much anywhere there's smoke") and 60 thousand people were interested. The event is described as "the smoke is preventing us all from going outdoors and going to work, and doing pretty much everything. I strongly believe with enough rocks we can make the smoke leave. So throw your rocks!" On a serious note, though, the event site does have links for donating to the Canadian Red Cross, Canadian animal shelters, and food banks.
Club Announcements
There will be no lunch meeting on Tuesday, September 11, 2018 at Sorrento's. Instead, that week we will meet in Wenatchee on Thursday, September 13, at noon at Pybus Market's Conference room. Our program will be Dr. Jones, Clinical Assistant Dean at UW, who will be speaking about the challenges of rural healthcare. It will be $10pp for lunch. More details to follow.

Do you contribute to the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International through automatic payment withdrawals? Please remember to notify Linda O'Brian at [email protected] if you do to ensure that the additional $25 annual club contribution is made in your name.

Club Committees:  A Chair is still needed for the 2019 Vineyard Run, and several committees need additional members. Check out what is available and where you can make a difference on the club website at Lake Chelan Rotary Committees .

If you are on a Community Service Team but do not yet have a "Rotarian at Work" t-shirt to wear to service events, please contact Phil Moller.
