Speakers: Apple Blossom Royalty

Manson Apple Blossom Festival

Program Sponsor: Daryl Ferguson

Join us this week for a presentation about the 2023 Manson Apple Festival. This will be the102nd year of this community event! We will be joined by this year's Manson Apple Blossom Royalty: Queen May Juarez, Princess Alondra Serrato, and Princess Briseida Mendez, along with Apple Blossom chaperone Heidi Griffith.

Queen May Juarez is the daughter of Julio & Mayra Juarez and has a 16 year old brother, Michael. In her junior and senior years, May has been a National Honor Society member as well as Vice President. In her senior year, she has been a TA in the Spanish first grade classroom, which has inspired her to pursue a career path in education. May has played the flute since the 6th grade. "I've dreamed of being a part of the Apple Blossom royalty since I was a little girl. Growing up in Manson, I received their support, and love this community. I'm so proud to represent my community and be a leader to our younger generation," said May.

Princess Alondra Serrato is the daughter of Octavio Serrato and Diana Bailon. She has three siblings: Jostin, Alexis and Dalayza. Alondra has been in Honor Society for the past 2 years and served as Treasurer her senior year. She started her own club, Raza Latina. She has been active in sports as well, playing softball in her sophomore and senior years; soccer the past 2 years, earning a letter and serving as Team Captain; and played basketball in the 9th and 11th grades. Alondra also enjoyed being part of Club Blue, Todos United and serving as Class Secretary in 2022. She enjoys dancing, singing, cooking and baking as well as spending time with friends and family. "Ever since learning about Apple Blossom, I've wanted to represent my community and wear pretty dresses, representing the community who watched me grow and become the strong woman I am today." Alondra plans to attend Washington State University and major in accounting.

Princess Briseida Mendez is the daughter of Margarito Mendez and Maria Socorro Resendez. She has three siblings: Deisy, Adilene and Yanieli. What Briseida enjoys most is spending time with her family and exploring new places. "I love how our community reunites for the festival. Being a part of this tradition makes me so proud to represent the community I come from. Showing others that no matter how hard things get, with hard work you can accomplish anything."

Be sure to bring a few extra dollars to buy your Apple Blossom button - they are $3 each!

President's Message

Dear Rotarians,

Spring may be the busiest season of our club’s Rotary calendar. We select scholarship recipients, we prepare for Cycle Chelan, and Buzz on Biz begins in Manson.

Additionally, a host of spring community projects come into focus and exchange students prepare to return home. Throughout it all, 911 Glass continues to march on as does the Book Buddies program.

Thank you – in advance – for giving as a club in so many ways this spring!

Remember that every Rotarian is needed on the day of Cycle Chelan, June 24th, (or in the week leading up to the event). Please mark your calendars!

Yours in Rotary,

Guy Evans

Rotary and KOZI Hunt for the Golden Egg Now through April 8

It's back again this year! The Hunt for the Golden Egg has been a tradition in Chelan for decades. Thanks to Coron Polley for his work in gathering sponsors and partnering with KOZI FM Radio to promote this Lake Chelan Rotary fundraiser. We are grateful for the support of our Rotarian sponsors VIP Insurance Agencies, RE/Max Advantage Chelan, Guy Evans Lake Chelan Real Estate and Edward Jones Advisor Kim Dunbar. Clues, written by Concie Luna, will be given on the air by KOZI FM several times per day and posted on their Facebook page. Unless a lucky someone in the community finds the egg - worth $500 in cash! - before then, clues will be given through Saturday, April 8.

Foundation Moment

HOW DO GLOBAL GRANTS MAKE SUSTAINABLE CHANGE IN THE WORLD?

One remarkable aspect of The Rotary Foundation is that opportunities for significant projects exist wherever there’s a need — in large countries and small ones, in metropolitan areas and rural ones.

Global grant projects are built on international partnerships, and those collaborations can take many forms. A district in Canada may be the international sponsor, with a U.S. district as the host sponsor. A club in France could sponsor a global grant project in Germany. The need, not the location, determines the project.

Here’s another example: Rotary clubs in Honduras and the U.S. worked together on a global grant project to provide eye care to people in Honduras. Members from both clubs provided vision services through local clinics. They evaluated more than 1,200 people and gave prescription eyeglasses to 600. A local nongovernmental organization will continue to provide glasses and medications to people who need them.

What does this mean for the community? Better eyesight can lead to better educational or occupational opportunities, which can mean a better quality of life for people.

Clubs around the world use these grants from the Foundation to make long-term, sustainable change. Every club has the opportunity to do this, one project at a time.

Where Will YOU Volunteer for Cycle Chelan?

We have many open Volunteer opportunities for the 2023 Cycle Chelan event! Saturday, June 24th is Ride Day. In addition, there are several opportunities in the week leading up to the ride. This is our big fundraiser of the year and it takes everyone in our club to make it a success! Here are some job descriptions for the week preceding the event as well as Ride Day.

June 19-23

Road Clean-up - We usually take a couple mornings on parts of the loops to clear

gravel from the road surface with a street sweeper, leaf blowers and brooms. We

typically need 8-10 volunteers.

Rest Stop Food Preparation - We need 5-8 volunteers to help with allocating the food

and supplies to the Rest Stop boxes. Amy Mills and Cindy Buboltz will be coordinating

the collection of food and packing of boxes.

Friday Park Set-up - We start Friday, June 23rd at 2:00 pm setting up the tents and other

supplies at the Park site. The set-up takes 8 – 10 volunteers and typically takes 1 – 2

hours.

Ride Day – June 24th Volunteers

SAG (Support And Gear) – The SAG teams drive the loop to provide support to the

riders as needed. SAG’s typically have pick-up trucks and are provided with a bin of supplies including first aid kits, tire pumps, various supplies, some food and water. We need 8-10 SAG drivers.

Cycle di Vino Support – Work with Bob to coordinate with the wineries. We need up to

10 volunteers to assist the wineries.

Boat Support – We provide volunteers at the State Park and Manson Bay to assist

riders in getting on and off the boats for the trip across the lake. We need 4 – 6

volunteers.

Rest Stop Support – We provide food and water at 7 locations on the loops. We need

15 or more Rotary volunteers to be Rest Stop Captains/Volunteers. The Captain works

with the volunteers to set up the provided tables and supplies. The Captain is

responsible picking up supplies (tables, food and water) on Friday and getting the

supplies to the Rest Stop location. The primary responsibility is to provide a great rider

experience at the Rest Stop.

Take Down – At 4 pm we need 8 – 10 volunteers to assist with take down of the tents

and materials.

Please send Dan Hodge an email or sign up at a Rotary lunch prior to April 30, indicating (1) your availability for volunteer opportunities the week prior to the ride and (2) your preference for volunteer assignments on Saturday, June 24th. He will be assigning specific volunteer positions by April 30.

Youth Service

Youth Exchange

Shane (left, blue shirt) with Elias from the Leavenworth club

Next year's outbound Youth Exchange student Shane (far right) along with most of the group in attendance in Penticton

The District 5060 Rotary Youth Exchange Orientation Weekend took place last weekend in Penticton, British Columbia, Canada. Our future outbounds Shane and Luke, their moms Tiffany and Mindy and current inbound student Candice spent the weekend in Penticton for the 2023/2024 outbound training. Tom Tochterman attended as well as part of his district leadership orientation. It was a very busy but productive time.

A few of the students in the picture are exchange students from past years. They are now Rotex volunteers who continue to participate in the Youth Exchange program by supporting both the inbound and outbound students throughout the year. Students learned about culture, culture shock, and how to navigate the ups and downs of living in a different country. Our future outbound students Luke and Shane roomed with and spent time with the inbound students from their future host countries of Japan and The Netherlands. Candice spent time with the District outbound student heading to France.

The parent sessions also included hearing from students who had recently experienced an exchange.

Mark Spurgeon from the East Wenatchee club also attended so their club could receive an update on the YE program. It’s been 5-6 years since they’ve hosted a student but they are co-sponsoring Luke with our club this year and are considering re-engaging with the program. We’re excited to work with the East Wenatchee club!

Host Families Needed for 2023/2023 Academic Year

Our club will be hosting 2 students next year: Sarai Villa Gatica, a girl from Chile and Sota Watanabe, a boy from Japan. They both sound fantastic and Susie Hepner has more details for folks who may be interested in hosting. We will need 6 host families, each generously opening their homes for 3 months. We expect Sarai to attend CHS and Sota to attend MHS. If you or anyone you know may be interested in hosting a student, please reach out to Susie at (917) 692-7698 or shepner1@comcast.net. Remember, families do NOT need to be Rotarians! Think of your neighbors and your friends!  ALSO, REMEMBER there is NO SUCH THING AS A PERFECT HOST FAMILY! The goal is for students to experience a variety of families. It’s not necessary to have any children in the household. “Grandparent” host families are frequently the favorite experience of students, as are families with young children. Single parents are also acceptable! All families go through background checks.  Susie is happy to thoroughly discuss the expectations of hosting a student without any commitment. Don’t overthink this! If you have any interest, please contact Susie.

Says a family who has hosted four students, "We will never forget the wonderful times we’ve had over the years hosting different exchange students. Each one is so unique and we learn more about the true meaning of Rotary International with each experience”.

Rotary Scholarship Application Deadline Coming Up
