Wirepoints: Illinois property tax bills have grown 268% since 1990

(The Center Square) – Illinois property taxes have far outpaced household incomes and home values since 1990, a Wirepoints analysis shows.
Tax bills per household have grown 268% since 1990, while average home values have grown 114%.
According to the nonprofit Wirepoints, the average household now owes nearly $4,400 in residential taxes each year, up from $1,200 in 1990.
In 2020, property taxes ate up 5.9% of median household incomes in Illinois. Thirty years ago, property tax bills consumed just 3.6% of incomes.
Wirepoints President Ted Dabrowski said Gov. J.B. Pritzker promised to address property taxes when he was elected, but it hasn’t happened.

Other Ways You Can Reduce your Lake County Property Tax Burden!

If Lake County Appeal can reduce your Lake County property’s assessed value, your property tax burden will decrease. Additionally, there are many exemptions available to taxpayers that can reduce the burden even more.
Make certain that you are receiving all of those you are entitled to! The value of the exemption is the exemption amount multiplied by your tax rate, which is on your tax bill.
General Homestead Exemption:
Lowers your principle residence’s assessed value (“AV”) by $6,000;
Homestead Exemption Recapture:
Please be aware that the Chief County Assessment Office has the ability to recapture taxable value in instances where homestead benefits were received in error;

Landlords Can Help Select Tenants Obtain $6,000 General Homestead Exemptions

Property taxes in Lake County are a growing concern to landlords and their bottom lines. As an investor, are you taking advantage of every exemption to limit property tax costs? Most homeowners know that their primary residence may qualify for the general homestead and senior exemptions. However, a single-family home (or condominium) tenant’s residence may also qualify if the tenant’s leases state that the tenant is responsible for the property tax liability. Under this arrangement, the tenant would continue to pay a monthly rent that includes the property tax liability, and the landlord would write the property tax checks payable to the county (i.e., business as usual).

Pressure-wash outdoor areas
Winter weather can leave behind all sorts of dirt and grime on your home's exterior and other outdoor areas. Take advantage of the warmer weather to give your home a high-powered cleaning. A pressure washer can make quick work of clearing away buildup on siding, driveways, decks, patios and walkways. If you don't own a pressure washer, you can often rent one at your local home center or hardware store. As you clean your home's exterior, be sure to direct the spray downward to avoid forcing water into cracks or seams, and use a lower-pressure setting on surfaces that could easily be damaged, such as painted siding or wood decks.
When the time comes to sell, the freshly cleaned exterior will be attractive to prospective buyers.
