Lake County Leader and Educator Essentials

April 2025

Dear Lake County Community,

I’m excited to share how Lake County continues to celebrate and invest in the power of education in this month’s newsletter.

On May 7, the Educator of the Year Celebration will honor our outstanding teachers and staff and all they do to make a difference in our schools every day. We are still accepting local business sponsorships. To learn more, visit our sponsorship website.

I can’t reveal all the details now, but next week we will announce a new partnership with the Lake County Education Foundation. This collaboration aims to enhance early reading support for children throughout our county. For more information, watch our May newsletter .

Thank you to our schools, families, and community partners for your continued commitment to education. Together, we’re building a brighter future for all learners in Lake County.

Sincerely,

Dr. Michael Karner

Regional Superintendent of Schools

Lake County, Illinois

Belonging in Action through Woodland’s Inclusive Vision is Driving Real Results

At Woodland School District 50, belonging and inclusion are the foundation of the district’s Strategic Plan and the inspiration behind innovative programs that drive meaningful results for students, staff, and families.

There is something for everyone “in the W,” and the district captures those stories of impact through #LifeintheW.

Above and Beyond Measures Support Student Engagement & Outcomes

Woodland invests in programs that enhance academic growth and personal connections, as students who feel connected to their school achieve more and attend regularly.

There is something for everyone “in the W.” Innovative programs like Dual Language and numerous student-led clubs like Girls’ Flag Football and eSports allow students to build relationships and pursue interests.

To ensure equity of access, the district also offers free transportation before and after school, plus supplemental academic programs during winter break, spring break, and Saturday mornings.

These efforts are working: Since 2022, Reading proficiency has increased by 48.7%, Math by 10.1%, and multi-language learners are meeting English proficiency standards at twice the state average.

Purposeful Partnerships Support Student Outcomes

Woodland pursues intentional partnerships with both its staff and parents. Staff have access to weekly professional development opportunities to build collective teacher efficacy by pursuing topics that interest them, such as differentiated learning, standards-based learning, and culturally responsive teaching.

A Parent University and Parent Mentor Program develop deep parent partnerships throughout Woodland. The mentor program through the Lake County Regional Office of Education has been working side by side with students and teachers since 2022.

At Woodland, when everyone belongs, everyone thrives. That is the power of #LifeintheW.

Woodland is hiring! Attend the Career Fair on Saturday, April 26, from 8 - 11 a.m. at the Woodland Educational Support Center, 1105 Hunt Club Road, Gurnee.

Community-Driven Mission Statement Takes Shape in North Shore School District 112

In the 2024-2025 school year, a months-long strategic change process brought together input from more than 200 students, staff, parents, and community members and led our district to adopt a new mission: North Shore School District 112 is a transformative learning organization where curiosity inspires minds, innovation shapes the future, and students, staff, and families engage to create a kind and connected community that is committed to excellence.

Curiosity Inspires Minds

Our students continue to demonstrate strong academic progress, ranking in the 84th percentile in English language arts and the 91st percentile in math compared to students across the state on the Illinois Assessment of Readiness.

Innovation Shapes the Future

We are thoughtfully integrating generative AI into classrooms, giving teachers tools to enhance learning while helping students build skills for a rapidly changing world, all while protecting student data and privacy.

A Kind and Connected Community

Recent climate survey results show strong feelings of connection across the district with staff, students, and parents. This sense of community is evident daily, supported by the 112 Education Foundation, parent-teacher organizations, the Bilingual Parent Advisory Committee (BPAC), and others who make our schools welcoming.

A Commitment to Excellence

All schools are advancing through the High-Reliability Schools (HRS) framework, a five-level system designed for continuous improvement and student success. Wayne Thomas has reached level 3, focusing on a guaranteed viable curriculum, while others progress through levels 1 and 2, focusing on safe cultures and effective teaching.

Modern Learning Environments

We’re modernizing our elementary schools to meet the needs of today’s learners. One K-5 school is already complete and open to students, with renovations underway or planned at four more schools. These projects are part of Phase 2 of our Long-Range Facilities Plan, made possible by community support through the 2022 referendum. Our goal is to create flexible, inspiring spaces that support how students learn best.

Every day in District 112, we see our mission reflected in the work happening across our schools. From the classroom to the community, we're focused on nurturing curiosity, supporting innovation, and maintaining high standards alongside the students, staff, and families who help make it all possible.
