The Orlando Orthopaedic Center Foundation announced the Chris Payer Honorary High School Sports Medicine Scholarship earlier this school year. Chris was an OOC Foundation board member who was an ardent supporter of youth athletics and education. Chris tragically passed away in early 2019. This scholarship award honors his legacy. This $2,500 scholarship award is given annually to one Orange County and one Seminole County High School student who participates in their high school’s Athletic Training Program and plans to pursue a sports medicine related career.
Achievements that were evaluated included academic success, engagement in athletic training and sports medicine related activities, and community activities outside of the high school environment.
Congratulations to our very own Lion, Jackson Andraski, who was selected as the winner for Orange County!

Introduction and History:
An alumna from Valencia, Jennifer Howe Rogan created the Howe Collazo's Starfish Swam
Scholarship at Valencia College in appreciation for assistance and guidance provided by Victor Collazo, Student Development Coordinator, during her education at Valencia College. Through the efforts of the Valencia Alumni Association, the State Student Development Commission, and many friends, it is now endowed assuring this scholarship will be awarded forever.
The scholarship is based on the Starfish Story where a boy was throwing starfish into the ocean that were washed up on shore. An old man asked what he was doing. He told him, “The tide is going out and the Sun is coming up. If they don’t get back into the water they will die.” The Old Man said, "There are hundreds. There’s no way you can make a difference." He picked one up, threw it into the ocean and said, "It made a difference to that one." At a presentation after sharing this story Jennifer looked at Mr. Collazo and then thanked him for "throwing her back in."
This scholarship is intended for those that have a “Story.” Those that are overcoming life’s challenges. Those that despite these challenges are still improving their lives through education and contributing to our community by serving others. Many of us have our “story.” Most use this as an excuse and quit. The “Starfish Scholarship” allows students to move forward despite these challenges.
During the past several years this award has gone to cancer survivors, those fighting other illnesses, care givers for their family, survivors of domestic abuse, the homeless, single mothers just making ends meet financially, children from families that may need additional financial assistance, those with disabilities, international students, and others. What they all had in common was a desire to move beyond their “Story,” are attending Valencia, and still find the time and energy to do service for their community.
Scholarships (various awards totaling $2300) for the Fall Term 2020 have been designated by the Valencia Foundation to support the studies of eligible applicants. The applicants must submit includes an essay, be currently enrolled or be accepted to Valencia College in a degree or certificate program.

Howe Collazo’s Starfish Swam Scholarship Valencia Foundation Application
Scholarships for Fall Term 2020 have been designated by the Valencia Foundation to support the studies of eligible applicants. Applicants MUST submit an essay*, be currently enrolled and/or be accepted to Valencia College in a degree or certificate program.
This award will be competitively awarded to a current Valencia College student, or new enrollee. Non-traditional and International students are encouraged to apply.
To apply for this scholarship, interested individuals must submit a one (1) page essay* (12 pt. text, single spaced, no cover sheet) on the following statement:
Life sometimes provides us with challenges that seem to be too devastating to allow us to accomplish our life plans and educational goals.
Describe how you are overcoming the challenge(s) in your life.
How will this award help you to achieve your personal, educational, and career goals, and to help you with your future ambitions?
Make sure you provide specific examples of your personal challenging experiences, service to the school/community, and any academic or professional experiences to demonstrate why you are deserving of this award. NOTE: All 3 sections will be used to evaluate your application.
Again, applicants must be currently enrolled and in good academic standing or accepted to Valencia College in a degree or certificate program before applying. The following must be included on the top (header) of the essay:
Student’s full name and Valencia ID number Preferred e-mail address AND Valencia e-mail Must be signed and dated.
NOTE: The applicant does not have to show financial need according to FAFSA to receive these funds. But a FAFSA must be on file in the Valencia College Financial Aid Office. This award may impact your total Financial Aid Package. International students are eligible to receive this award.

The scholarship recipients will be notified by e-mail in June and will be awarded for the 2020-21 Fall Term after verification of qualifications.

This survey is intended for Florida residents to anonymously answer a brief series of questions which the Department will use to help inform and improve the state’s response to COVID-19.

The OCPS Virtual Parent Academy is an extension of the OCPS Parent Academy, where parents and children are given an opportunity to join a session online from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM. The online platform is an enrichment tool for parents and students to obtain educational information and resources. The events are accessible online from any location with internet access. The presentations are conducted by district and community experts.

OCPS Grab-and-Go Meals
:OCPS Grab-and-Go Meals: We have another update on operating hours and the district’s FREE Grab-and-Go meal distribution. Beginning Monday, April 20, food distribution and office hours for school sites and district offices will only be on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. This is in an effort to keep more individuals at home to reduce exposure to others. All school sites and district offices will be closed on Tuesdays and Thursdays but employees will continue to work remotely at home on those days and can be reached via email.
The 52 FREE Grab and Go school sites can be found on the front page of the district’s website: ocps.net. Schools and offices will be open from 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM and meals will be distributed between 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Children will receive meals on Monday for Tuesday, and on Wednesday for Thursday. Weekend meals will continue to be distributed on Fridays.
Distance learning instruction and district operations will continue Monday through Friday, but again the buildings will now be closed entirely on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Subject to change.

Free Children’s Meals in Florida

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE *For Orange County, evictions and utility shut offs have been suspended for the time being.
Florida Department of Economic Opportunity: Reemployment Assistance Benefits due to COVID-19 (Formerly known as unemployment assistance). The application for benefits can be filled out online for individuals whose hours have been cut or who have been laid off due to COVID-19 (individuals quarantined or taking care of a family member with a diagnosed case are also eligible).
Orange County Government Rental Assistance : This program offers one-time rental assistance for those who are affected by the COVID-19 crisis. To apply, individuals call to schedule an appointment. There is a list of required documentation on the website.
Small Business Emergency Bridge Loan: These short-term, interest-free working capital loans are intended to “bridge the gap” between the time a major catastrophe hits and when a business has secured longer term recovery resources, such as sufficient profits from a revived business, receipt of payments on insurance claims or federal disaster assistance.
Crisis Assistance Program: Mortgage, rent and utility assistance for residents of Orange County who have insufficient resources to meet emergency needs. Appointments are made by calling (407) 836-6500.
United Way Recovery Fund: In response to the COVID-19/Coronavirus pandemic, Heart of Florida United Way has established a fund to support Central Florida residents whose financial stability is being impacted. The focus of the fund is to support the ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, and Employed) population experiencing hardship due to decreased hours or unpaid leave.
Salvation Army: Emergency financial assistance is available for individuals who have been an Orange County resident for at least one year. This resource is limited and individuals can call 407-423-8581 x26491 to schedule an appointment or receive more information.

What are the requirements needed for Bright Futures? See the table below. FAS is the Florida Academic Scholar Award and pays full tuition to a public Florida University. FMS is the Florida Medallion Scholar Award and pays 75% of your tuition to a public Florida University. Keep in mind Bright Futures super scores test scores. They will combine your highest EBRW (Reading) with your highest math score from different test dates.

- I haven’t finished my hours. What is the deadline to submit them? All community service hours must be turned in to your school counselor by May 1, 2020. If you need an extension, communicate with your counselor prior to May 1st.
- Where do I submit my Community Service Hours? Email your counselor the community service form and the record of the hours you volunteered. A blank copy is located on the school’s website and Canvas page under Guidance. Community Service Forms
- How do I submit my Community Service Hours? The hours must be documented on the district approved community service form and include the hours log. These forms are submitted to your counselor in Student Services. Emailing to your school counselor the information as an attachment may be an option under the current circumstances. Please contact your counselor for specific instruction.
- How do I submit my test scores to Bright Futures? Your SAT or ACT scores will be uploaded directly to Bright Futures. You do not need to do anything about this.
- Can I still retake the SAT or ACT? Yes. Bright Futures will take test scores through June of your senior year. Currently, no decision has been announced from the state due to the Coronavirus.
- What if I don’t have the GPA to qualify yet for Bright Futures? Your GPA can still change. Bright Futures will look at your GPA through high school graduation. There is time to raise your GPA and still qualify.
- Why is my Bright Futures GPA different from my high school GPA? Bright Futures recalculates a student’s GPA using only the highest grades earned in the required 16 academic core credits. All weighted courses are given the same value of a 0.50 increase.
- If after the 1st semester of my senior year I qualified for the FMS, can I still earn the FAS award? Yes. You have until the end of this school year to meet all 3 requirements. Once you raise your GPA, test scores, or community service hours, Bright Futures will award you the appropriate award FAS. Many students begin at FMS and end up attaining FAS status by the time they graduate.
- When will I find out if I have earned a Bright Futures Scholarship? Students typically find out their award status in late July or early August.
- How does Bright Futures receive my transcript? The district sends all senior final transcripts to Bright Futures at the end of June.
- Do I have to reapply for Bright Futures? No. Most of you completed the application with your counselor back in October. If your application is incomplete, or there is an issue with it, you would have received an email from Mrs. Mora.
- What if I haven’t applied for Bright Futures yet, is it too late? No. Check first whether you completed the application and simply don’t remember. It is difficult to make corrections if students have duplicate accounts.
- Where can I receive help with completing the application? Email your College and Career Specialist or your school counselor and they will assist you.
- Are there other scholarships I could qualify for in addition to Bright Futures? Keep in mind the Florida Financial Aid Application you submitted for Bright Futures allows you to be viewed for all scholarships offered through the state of Florida. Other ways to earn money for school would be through completing the FAFSA (fafsa.ed.gov), or by applying for scholarships found on the class of 2020 Google Classroom page and the OCPS Scholarship Bulletin. Students also can apply for scholarships through large online databases. These include fastweb.com and scholarships.com.
Testing questions
- What is going to happen with my AP, IB, AICE tests? Check your email. By now you will have received information on how each organization is handling your exams/assessments. For example, by now College Board emailed everyone with information on the computer based AP tests students will be taking from home.
- Is it too late to take SAT/ACT for college admissions? Currently, SAT is cancelled through June and ACT is still planning on administering the June and July tests. All this may change. It is very important that you look at what your selected university is telling you. Some universities are extending application/deposit deadlines.

Here are the eligibility requirements:
You must be a citizen, national or legal permanent resident of the United States.
You must have a minimum 3.0 GPA.
You or someone in your immediate family has recently gone through financial hardship.
Scholarship is available for high school seniors and current college students nationwide.
Must be attending an accredited 4-year college/university or a 2-year community college for Fall 2018.
A current transcript MUST be submitted for consideration.
A 500-word minimum essay explaining your future study and career plans and how your life experiences have influenced your goals. Special consideration will be given to members of a family that have recently gone through bankruptcy.
Although not required, applicants are encouraged to submit recommendation letters and/or resumes to substantiate their application for consideration.

It’s super easy to do.
Create your student profile and update it with your grades, community service involvement, clubs or sports you participate in, test scores, attendance and many other categories.
Choose which colleges you would like to follow. The colleges you choose to follow will reward you with microscholarships for all of the great things you are doing in high school. It’s like a savings account for each institution you choose to follow that will grow every time you update it with the things you are doing in school.
Once you apply to one of the colleges you follow on Raise.me, are accepted and enroll at the institution, any money earned on the Raise.me website will be deposited to your student account at the college and will be divided up into a 4 year scholarship!

Seniors and parents/guardians of seniors. Two very important applications opened up on October 1st. Both applications can help your senior earn scholarships and/or grants to help pay for college. Below is a brief description of each:
Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) The FAFSA application will help some students qualify for up to $6000 in Pell Grant (money from the Federal Government that does not need to be paid back) or additional institutional aid. You will need a copy of the parents/guardians 2017 taxes to complete this application. The Pell Grant is need based therefore based on income some families may or may not qualify. It is best for every family to complete the FAFSA as institutions may be able to provide additional institutional aid, need or merit based, if the FAFSA is on file.
Students will need to create an FSA ID username and password prior to starting the FAFSA application. The FSA ID serves as an electronic signature in order to submit the FAFSA application via the website. Each senior should create his/her own FSA ID username and password as one or both parents/guardians should as well.
Florida Financial Aid Application (FFAA) The FFAA must be completed in order for students to receive the Bright Futures scholarship as well as many other scholarships and grants the state of Florida may be able to offer. Students must complete this application as soon as possible and must continue to work on meeting all eligibility requirements for Bright Futures prior to the end of their senior year. Please understand there are other scholarships other than Bright Futures a student may qualify for even if they do not meet the requirements for Bright Futures.
