Dear Lions,

Storm season has been a long one this year. You should know that Lake Nona High School AP Calculus and AP Statistics students have been working with the 45th Weather Squadron for the last few years. The assist with the calculations. Please view the video from the 45th Weather Squadron that highlights our very own Lake Nona High Lions. The video is available at the bottom of the 45th Weather Squadron website (https://www.patrick.spaceforce.mil/About-Us/Weather/). Please do not forget we still have school this coming week, there is lots of learning still occurring daily. Remember the campus will be closed November 23-27 for Thanksgiving break. Classes will return to their normal schedule on Monday, November 30.

As you read this, keep ROARING loud because the Lady Lion Volleyball Players are playing for a State Title on Sunday, November 15, at 7:00 PM. We need your cheers to be heard across the state.

Theatre Dept
Next week, Mrs. Chase’s top theatre class will be performing a completely student written and directed play, “Under The Pine Tree”. After a traumatic experience, a girl begins to come to terms with what has happened to her and find peace of mind through the help of her family and newfound friends. “Under The Pine Tree” will be filmed on November 20th and will be streamed to the public at a later date. This shows touches on issues such as assault and sexual violence and includes instances of mild language so audience discretion is advised.

Parents and students can learn more through a virtual Magnet Fair

Oct. 27, 2020 - OCPS is hosting a virtual Magnet Fair to promote its specialized learning programs known as magnets. All parents and students are invited to learn more about what magnet programs are offered in elementary, middle and high schools. These programs encourage academic excellence in highly specialized areas of study and often pave a road into programs in post-secondary schools and colleges.

Spotlight programs include:

  • NEW – Wekiva High School’s Academy of Culinary Arts – In this four-year career and technical education program students learn and master the business and practical skills necessary for post-graduation success in the rapidly growing food, beverage and hospitality sector, while gaining employability skills such as communication, teamwork, professionalism and time management. 

  • Liberty Middle School’s Cambridge Middle School Academy - The Cambridge curriculum provides middle school students the opportunity to explore rigorous high school level coursework requiring knowledge, understanding, application and skills through research projects, investigation and written response, as well as practical oral labs relying on student-supported perspectives.

  • Sally Ride Elementary School’s Aviation and Aerospace - This magnet program provides an enhanced curriculum focusing on science with connections to the worlds of aviation and aerospace through hands-on, minds-on experiments. 

See a list of all OCPS magnet programs offered at the elementary, middle and high school level. Students must apply for the magnet program at www.schoolchoice.ocps.net. If there are more applicants than the number of seats available in a specific program, students are selected through a lottery. The application window is Nov. 1, 2020 – Feb. 15, 2021.

Students who currently reside in Orange County and who are entering a grade from kindergarten through 10th in the 2021-22 school year may apply for a magnet program seat. Students applying for kindergarten programs must be 5 years old before Sept. 1.

The Office of School Choice Services in Orange County works to increase awareness among parents and community members about voluntary public school choice options in Florida. School Choice means providing parents the opportunity to be involved in selecting the school their child will attend. It also means providing services and assistance to help children receive the instruction that best meets their needs.
