7th Grade Civics #1 in the OCPS Southeast Learning Community
At the end of the last marking period, students took PMAs in several different classes. Seventh grade Civics, a state tested course, had awesome results. So awesome in fact, that our scores were the highest in the Southeast Learning Community! Congratulations to our amazing teachers and students for working hard and showing that the Knights are always top contenders!
The Civics teachers were #1 in the Southeast Learning Community!
Sofia Fumero earns OCPS Spirit of Excellence Award
The district recognized our very own Sofia Fumero and granted her the Spirit of Excellence award this spring. This award recognizes English Language Learners who have overcome the obstacles of learning a new language, acclimating to a new country and culture, and mastering a new school system.

Sofia entered Lake Nona Middle School as a non-English speaking seventh grader in September of 2019. Sofia was a quiet student when she first arrived from Venezuela, but she was diligent and hard working. Despite the disruption of her seventh grade year by the pandemic and the forced transition to on-line learning, Sofia did not give up. She completed her work and earned all A's in her academic classes. Now at the end of 8th grade, Sofia excels in her academic classes and takes AP Spanish Language and Culture, where she demonstrates love and passion for her first language.

Sofia is a leader among her peers and she is loved and respected by her teachers. We are so proud to have Sofia represent Lake Nona Middle School!

Media Center Highlights
ELD Classes visit the Media Center
This past week the media center hosted Mrs. Espino’s ELD classes for a visit and book checkout. Students in this class - English Language Development - are first year ELL, or English Language Learners. These students have been in the country for less than two years and are still learning the language. Ms. Powers, LNMS Media Specialist, reviewed genres and formats with the students before book checkout. And we love to see the reading happening in class!
Ms. Powers shows and discusses a biography with our ELD students this past week.
Students were able to stretch out and read their books when they returned to class.
And there are TONS of free books up for grabs!
As the media center continues to weed its collection of outdated and duplicate titles, these books need new homes. Students are encouraged to stop by and grab some titles to read and these do NOT need to be returned. The media center is striving to add diverse and relevant titles to its collection for the benefit of our students.
Come and get them!
Attention 8th Grade Knights!
Teacher Shout Outs! (Musical Edition)
Mrs. Jennings:
* Mrs. Jennings deserves a special recognition because of how fun and hardworking she has been during the past year. She is an awesome teacher, and I know that in the future, she will be even more awesome. :)

* She is amazing because she has to teach both virtual and F2F how to play their instruments which can be really hard, because they aren't there in person. She also makes band fun and cool instead of boring.

* She is so nice and funny and she is a great band teacher.

Mrs. Majka:
* She works very hard to teach us an instrument virtually and she teaches chorus.

* They are always trying to make chorus as fun as possible by doing educational activities, even with the LaunchED students. They're always making us laugh and they always show a smile and great attitude and respect for their students. They are very sweet and they're always looking out for their students.

* They have been working so hard to teach both LaunchED and Face 2 Face students. They've been teaching us about Motown and the dance for the Motown concert. They also teach us how to read music! That is a lot of work so I think they should all get some recognition!

Mrs. Connelly:
* Mrs. Connelly makes chorus really fun and is always patient with us

* I want to shout-out my chorus teachers because they are super supportive towards their students. Mrs. Majka and Mrs. Connelly makes the students feel very special before and after they prepare for singing

* They work hard to provide good music for us and making learning fun. They have been my teachers for 3 years and I am lucky to have them.

Superintendent's Community Update
OCPS Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Barbara Jenkins, recently released another YouTube Community Update video. These are short (about 6 minutes), but do include a number of important topics that affect our Lake Nona families such as Covid-19 news, end of year activities, LaunchEd options for 2021-22, and more. It is worth a look when you get a few moments - link to view video.
Monday's Motivational Moment!
Education Pays
Each spring, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics releases a chart that shows what people earn as well and how many people cannot find work by level of education for the prior year. They released their 2020 findings last week and the new chart is presented just below (read full article here).
The lesson for our Knights? While making money and finding work are not the only reasons for acquiring a good education and taking advantage of all that Lake Nona & OCPS offer, one day our Knights will be out in the world on their own. This simple bar chart, which the BLS prepares each year, consistently shows the same pattern: those with more education typically have larger paychecks and much lower odds of being out of work. While this is not always the case, overall this holds true year-after-year.

Have a great week Knights!
