Blessing of the Animals
October 4th
 Celebrating the life of Francis of Assisi is a novel practice for Lutheran pastors. Martin Luther, himself a former Augustinian friar, had a general disdain for the Franciscans, and frankly, for any religious order. The father of the Reformation movement and the Protestant work ethic often criticized the Franciscans monks because they considered begging to be a sacred calling. In Luther's mind, an honest day's work was the highest human calling. And yet, in spite of their theological disputes, a healthy respect for Francis has emerged - even in congregations in the Lutheran ghettos of Minnesota. For some, it is Francis's deep respect for creation, for others it is his passionate service on behalf of the poor, and for others still, it is his piety that longs to be an instrument of God's peace. In Marine on St. Croix, the last parish I served in Minnesota, it was this deep respect for all God's creatures great and small that was celebrated each year at the village's annual blessing of the animals.
Francis is also known as the author of a prayer...
Make me a channel of your peace,
Where there is hatred let me bring your love,
Where there is injury your pardon Lord,
And where there's doubt true faith in you.
October 4th is the traditional date commemorated as the Feast of St. Francis. Since this is a Sunday, Francis will be celebrated both in music in the 9:30 Sunday morning worship service and outside at 10:45 after the service in our own rite of the Blessing of the Animals. For those who have been socially distancing, this will be an opportunity to see families and friends at a safe distance outdoors. Refreshments will be available as well. Throughout the fall, we will be experimenting with more outdoor activities to gather safely and to reconnect with the traditions of Lake of the Isles. Our Saviour's Housing Meal
Lake of the Isles Lutheran Church has provided a meal for forty the first Friday of every month for many years. This has been a wonderful opportunity for families or groups of friends to work together!

If you would like to support Our Saviour's Housing during the COVID-19 pandemic, consider the best option possible at this time...convert your meal into a financial donation. The suggested amount is $250.

Thrivent members are eligible to apply for a Thrivent Action Grant to cover the cost of the meal and purchase supplies for Our Saviour's Housing continuing needs. Donation of the grant by Thrivent members, who are unable to make and/or serve the meal is much appreciated! Grant processing is 4-6 weeks.
Our Saviour's Housing is in need of additional funding for COVID-related costs, such as hazard and overtime pay, cleaning supplies, hygiene supplies, personal protective equipment, and increased facilities usage. oscs-mn.org/donate/

Growlers & Theology
The informal study of theology and adult beverages will continue in October on the Church Patio or in Fellowship Hall at 6:30 pm, as determined by the weather and light. We will experiment with both an in-person and Zoom options. Growlers & Theology is scheduled for October 8th and 22th.

Children's & Family Ministry
 Our annual event in honor of St Francis will be held this Sunday, October 4, outdoors near the Church Patio after worship (approx. 10:45 am) This event is for all ages! You can bring your live animals and/or your most favorite stuffed/plush animals for a special blessing by Pastor Haug. If the weather is rainy, we will take turns under the Cloister.

Women's Bible Study
Our text is be First Corinthians: Living Love When We Disagree by Melissa Spoelstra.
Relationships are messy. Sometimes we struggle to get along, especially when there is disagreement. Often we find ourselves
divided--even as Christians. How can we work out our differences
and disagreements with humility and grace
always showing the love of Christ, while still remaining true to what we believe?
The Apostle Paul wrote to the Christians living in Corinth about this very thing. The cultural backdrop of Corinth was even more over
tly sinful than our culture today, yet Paul boldly encouraged the Corinthian Christians not to ridicule one another or outsiders but to work together to show the love of Christ.
In this study we will explore Paul's first letter to the Corinthians to learn how we as Christians are to deal with differences and divisions--whether in the workplace, neighborhood, school, home, social media community, or church.
We'll discover that the answer is living and sharing the radical love
of Jesus Christ, and we'll unpack what this means and how we can
live it out day by day.
Until we can meet in person, our Bible Study will be online via Zoom. This month we will meet on
Thursdays, October 1 & 15, at 7:00pm.

Confirmation Sunday
 In many Lutheran churches the Confirmation worship service is known as the Affirmation of Baptism. The name recalls the promises that were made by the parents and godparents at the time of a child's baptism. They vowed that the Christian faith would be child's one day, and that they would speak on behalf of the child until that day comes. The Rite of Affirmation is that coming of age for the young adult. It is also a day for a renewal of the faith through the laying on of hands and the giving of the Holy Spirit. On Reformation Sunday, October 25th we will celebrate confirmation with Claire Jacoby. |

Food is, of course, the main ongoing aspect of CES. Food donations and/or funds to buy food are always welcome. As a result of our food purchase "connections," any dollar donated to CES to purchase food goes 10-20 times farther than a dollar spent at the store. For example, for the price of one can of corn at your grocery store, CES can purchase 10 cans of corn through the food banks.

Fellowship Hall Exhibition
 Kay Christianson served for over 30 years in executive management at Minnesota corporations and nonprofits, including NCS/Pearson, LearningByte International, and Children's Cancer Research Fund. Throughout her years of employment, her love of photography was always a vital part of her life. From the early days of having her own darkroom and working with black and white images to her current work with digital photography, Kay's work has always been inspired by nature. Now retired, she developed her Enlightened by Nature Photographic Portfolio. This collection has been created from the many kayaking, backpacking, hiking, cross country skiing, and running adventures that she has had and continues to experience. As she says: It is always such a delightful surprise to take a turn in the forest or paddle around a bay and discover the next unforgettable view of nature. Her work has been exhibited and sold at art institutes, galleries and cafes in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Her work has received numerous awards including first place in the 2019 Minnesota Parks and Trails Photo Contest.
She is honored to be invited to exhibit at LOTI.
