Music in February at Lake of the Isles
And I saw the seven angels who stand before God, and seven trumpets were given to them. Another angel with a golden censer came and stood at the altar; he was given a great quantity of incense to offer with the prayers of all the saints on the golden altar that is before the throne. And the smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints, rose before God from the hand of the angel.
Revelation 8:2-5 NRSV
According to the Book of Revelation, music and incense are integral parts of worship. Lutherans understand the power of music in worship. Music can encourage, inspire, comfort, challenge, and when dissonant, to make us uncomfortable. It is very much like the Word of God which goes forth and does not return empty. It must do its works- and often this is hand in hand with music. Most Lutherans, however, are not so convinced about the use of incense- especially in a tightly closely sanctuary in the middle of winter where a little pinch goes along way.
Music will play an important role in the life of the church and community throughout the month of February at Lake of the Isles. On Sunday, February 3rd, the Lake String Quartet will perform in our worship service for Candlemas, the Presentation of Our Lord.
The Quartet will perform music of Corelli and Vivald, as well as accompany the church choir in settings of two of the most familiar liturgical text, the 23rd Psalm and the Song of Simeon, or the Nunc Dimittis, texts in the church.
On Thursday, February 7th at 7:30, The Linden Hills Chamber Orchestra, under the direction of Yuri Ivan, will perform
Mozart's Overature, La Clemenz di Tito;
Anton Bruch's Violin Concerto No. 1, featuring Ben Odhner of the Minnesota Orchestra; and Beethoven's Symphony No. 4. The concert is free, open to the public, and will be followed by a reception in Fellowship Hall.
On Sunday, February 10th, the morning worship service will feature the music of classical guitarist Andre Pellington. He will play J.S. Bach's Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, and Antonio Lauro's Vals Venezolano #3.
On Friday, February 15th at 7:30, violinist Shannon Thomas and pianist Stijn De Cock, faculty at the Florida State University College of Music, will present the three complete Brahms' Sonatas for Violin and Piano. The concert is free, open to the public, and will be followed by a light reception.
Finally, on Sunday, February 24, at 2:00 the Isles Ensemble will perform Estonian composer Arvo Pärt's Fratres, for Violin & Piano; Haydn's String trio in C Major; and Tchaikovsky's Piano Trio in A minor, Opus 50. Suggested general admission is $20.
Enjoy the music throughout this month of February. It is truly one of the treasures at Lake of the Isles.
As for the incense? That will wait until the evening services of Lent.
Peace, Pastor Arden Haug

Wedding at Cana Thank You!
Special thanks to Michelle and Bernie Reisberg (along with Sam, Tory, and Spencer) for hosting this year's Wedding at Cana Wine Tasting event. Over 65 people attended which raised just over $1000 for CES: Community Emergency Services. We appreciate the work and support of Deb Black from The Wine Company for leading the tasting and to the attendees who made 1970's inspired appetizers.
The afternoon was highlighted by an appearance of the recently wed couple, Georgette and Ted Baxter, aka Cindy and Mike Huttner.

Presentation of Our Lord (Candlemas)
Celebration of Baptism, February 3rd
February 2nd has many names. In popular culture, we refer to it as Ground Hog's Day. In the church, it has been known as Candlemas, the Festival of the Purification of Mary, and as the Presentation of Lord. According to St. Luke's gospel, the infant Jesus was carried by Mary and Joseph to the Temple in Jerusalem on the 40th day since Jesus' birth, which is February 2nd. It was during this visit that the old prophet Simeon, who had been assured that he was to see the Messiah before his death, saw the couple and their infant son Jesus walking across the Temple. Having seen the infant Messiah, Simeon took the child into his arms and announced, "Now, oh God, I can leave this world in peace- for I have seen my salvation." He then continued his prophecy with the word that Jesus would be the light for all the world.
This year as we celebrate the Presentation of Our Lord, we will invite the families and children of those baptized in 2018 to be a part of the worship service. They will be presented a medallion imprinted with their child's name and their baptismal date to serve as a reminder of their connection to Lake of the Isles and their more important relationship as a child of God.

Women's Bible Study Our Spring 2019 Session begins this month. The text is Finding Joy When Life is Out of Focus: a Study for Joy-Thirsty Women by Angela Donadio.
We all walk through seasons when joy plays an unwelcome game of Hide and Seek. Disappointment, worry, and adversity blur our lens on life, sabotaging our ability to develop the meaningful relationships we long for and realize our worth in Christ.
Finding Joy When Life is Out of Focus will help you choose contentment regardless of circumstance, transform faulty thought patterns through the truth of God's Word, and persevere when life is unraveling.
We meet at
7:00pm in the
Library.

Working is the theme of an ongoing speaker series in which people associated with our congregation talk about what they do all day and how they feel about the work they do.
The next session will be Sunday, February 10th and the guest speaker will be David Hagford.
David has had an exciting 30+ year career leading teams involved in the design and construction of world wide experimental test facilities to support the development of aircraft, spacecraft, rockets, advanced defense systems, automobiles, as well as facilities to train paratroopers, Olympic swimmers, etc. After leaving aerospace, he went on to establish Creative Business Coaching, LLC, an organization that works with owners of small local businesses helping them grow, and in turn create wealth and employment opportunities in their communities.
David's talk will take place after a brief coffee break following the Sunday morning service. Those who are interested will be invited to take their coffee/tea into the Christy Room at 11:00am for about 45 minutes. The first 15-20 minutes will be an informal talk by David, leaving the time remaining for questions from those in attendance.

February 22 at 4:30pm we meet at the home of Debra Gilroy to discuss
The Magic of Forgiveness, by Tian Dayton
We'll share snacks and beverages. Bring something to share if you like.
Forgiveness is not an event, it is a process. Forgiveness is most powerful when a woman reaches midlife: a natural time for reflection. In this groundbreaking book, therapist Tian Dayton shows women how assisting their lives and forgiving old wounds is an essential to their well-being as proper nutrition and retirement planning.
