Lake of the Isles Lutheran  Church

June 2019

And All the Prophets

Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, (Jesus) interpreted to them the things about himself in all the scriptures
St. Luke 24: 27

The Lutheran, Episcopal, Methodist and Roman Catholic Churches all once followed their own set of readings known as a denominational lectionary. Except for festivals, the congregation in each denomination might read different lessons every Sunday from those of their neighbor. For Lutherans, it was often a one year lectionary in which every year the pastor would preach on roughly the same 52 gospel readings. Eventually, this evolved into a three-year lectionary cycle. In contrast, in the freer Protestant churches, where there were no assigned readings, pastors freely selected their own passage as the basis of their sermon.

In the late 1960's many denominations, together with the Catholic Church, began to develop a three-year lectionary. Its final form was introduced as the Revised Common Lectionary in 1994. Today, it is the most common set of readings used in the churches of the English speaking world. It is why you can often visit your neighbor's church for a "second opinion" on the pastor's sermon.

Even this concerted effort, however, only scratched the surface of the Old Testament's writings- especially the stories of the prophets. To address this, the ELCA created an Alternative Semicontinuous Lesson and Psalm Lectionary based on the stories of the prophets. Throughout the summer, we will focus on these lessons. Some will be familiar, and some may be completely new. Hopefully together, we will experience the fullness of holy scripture.

Peace, Pastor Arden Haug

In the News...

In case you missed it on the evening news or in the morning paper, Pastor Haug and Governor Tim Walz were seen together on Memorial Day at the State Capitol, blessing and ringing a 70 year-old replica of the Liberty Bell. Through an act of the Minnesota Legislature, the bell was allowed to ring for the first time in its history. The replica was cast by the same company France that created the Lake of the Isles' bell. Pastor Haug serves on the board of the City of Bells a non-profit organization that promotes the care and ringing of historic bells. (You may recall the mobile carillon that played at Lake of the Isles two years ago.)

Springtime is the time of beginning and endings. This is especially true for high school. On Sunday, June 2nd, we will honor our high school graduate  Sam Reisberg. He will be attending St. Olaf College in the fall.
Working Speaker Series
Working is the theme of an ongoing speaker series in which people talk about what they do all day and how they feel about what they do.
The next session will be Sunday, June 2nd. The guest speaker will be Sheridan Swee, who will talk about what it's like to be a college student these days. Sheridan is a  graduating senior at the University of Minnesota studying Political Science, Spanish and Portuguese Studies, Global Studies and Arabic. You may recognize Sheridan when you see her because she also staffs the nursery on Sunday mornings.
Sheridan's talk will take place after a brief coffee break following the Sunday morning service.
This will be the last in the Working series that has run the past two years. Hope you've enjoyed getting to know some of your fellow LOTI members a bit better.

Pentecost Sunday
Wear Red!

According to the Book of the Apostles, on the 50th day of Easter known in the ancient Greek world as Pentecost, God sent his Holy Spirit upon the disciples. They had gathered in prayer and thanksgiving wondering when God would send them a clear vision for the church. On that Pentecost, God sent the spirit upon the disciples, and the spirit appeared upon their heads like tongues of fire. On Sunday, June 9, we celebrate as the birth of the Christian Church and it mission to proclaim the good news to the whole world.
Women's Book Club
June 14 at 4:30pm we meet at the home of Debra Gilroy to discuss The Screwtape Letters, by C. S. Lewis.
We'll share snacks and beverages.  Bring something to share if you like.  The Screwtape Letters is a classic masterpiece of religious satire that entertains readers with its sly and ironic portrayal of human life and foibles from the vantage point of Screwtape, a highly placed assistant to "Our Father Below."
At once wildly comic, deadly serious, and strikingly original, C.S. Lewis's The Screwtape Letters is the most engaging account of temptation-and triumph over it-ever written.

ASI Spelmanslag and Cloudberries Performance

Although midsummer sounds like July or August in the US, it is celebrated in June in Scandinavia. It is the time when the days are long and the colors of sea and forest are vibrant. Traditional fiddlers in costume from the American Swedish Institute Spelmanslag and the women's chorus the Cloudberries will perform at LOTI for our  9:30 Worship Service on Father's Day, June 17th . They will perform traditional fiddle tunes and accompany the congregation in singing favorite Swedish hymns, including  Children of the Heavenly Father and
How Great Thou Art.
