Dear Laker Community,
As we begin the 2026-2027 academic year, I am delighted to extend a warm welcome to our returning and new Lower School families. The start of a new school year brings renewed energy, excitement, and opportunity, and we are eager to partner with you for another meaningful year of learning and growth.
This year is especially exciting as we continue our journey with the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program (PYP). Entering our third year of development, we have completed our Program of Inquiry and several other key requirements, positioning us for our anticipated IB authorization visit in the spring. This milestone reflects our school's commitment to developing curious, compassionate, and internationally minded learners.
Our 2026-2027 school theme, "Lakers are Inquirers, Inclusive, and Innovative," beautifully aligns with the work taking place throughout the Lower School. Every day, our students are encouraged to ask questions, wonder, explore, and take ownership of their learning as inquirers. They learn to value different perspectives and build meaningful relationships as members of an inclusive community where everyone belongs. In support of this, last Friday we established a new tradition in the LS: Unity Day! With ice cream sundae parties for the younger students and water slides (and a DJ!) for grades 2 - 5, students had an opportunity to build connections with their peers in a fun setting. Finally, through our special area classes of Science and Dream Lab, students are challenged to think creatively and approach problem-solving with flexibility and confidence as innovative thinkers. These qualities not only support academic growth but also help develop the character and skills our students need to thrive in an ever-changing world.
A strong home-school partnership is essential to student success, and we are excited to connect with families through a variety of community events. One of our first opportunities to come together is Lower School Back-to-School Night on Wednesday, August 26. During this special evening, parents will meet their child’s teachers, explore classroom expectations, and learn more about the learning experiences and opportunities that await their children this year.
Additionally, I encourage you to join us for our Lower School Parent Coffee Talks throughout the year. These informal gatherings with the Lower School administrative team provide a space for conversation and questions on selected topics.
The first two Coffee Talks are scheduled for:
- September 10 (PK3-Grade 1): Independence in Early Childhood
- September 24 (Grades 2-5): Social Media and Technology
Additional details for each Coffee Talk will be sent to families soon.
Thank you for helping us create such a positive start to the school year. I am confident that this will be a year filled with discovery, growth, and meaningful connections. Together, as a community of Inquirers, Inclusive learners, and Innovative thinkers, we will provide our students with an enriching educational experience that inspires them to reach their fullest potential.
I look forward to all that we will accomplish together this year!
Ms. Stephanie Jackson
Director of Lower School
