8th Annual
“Thumbs Up for Charity!”
Campaign
As Community Financial Credit Union celebrates our 70th anniversary this May, we are proud to once again bring back “Thumbs Up for Charity!” for its 8th year. This annual giving campaign provides local residents the chance to give a “thumbs up” to their favorite charitable organizations, through both nominations and voting. In total, we will be distributing $25,000 to deserving local organizations chosen by the community.
From March 8th through March 26th we accepted nominations from the community on our website, cfcu.org. Nominees included 501(c)(3) organizations, recognized community support organizations, or those associated with an accredited educational institution serving the communities within Community Financial's field of membership.
“We believe it’s important to give the residents of our communities a chance to tell us which groups they think deserve recognition,” says Manager/Community Relations, Natalie McLaughlin, “and “Thumbs Up for Charity!” gives them that opportunity. It’s always so amazing to learn about all of these organizations and the great work they do in our community.”
All entries were then reviewed by a panel of Community Financial team members and five organizations selected for the community to vote on. We invite members of the community to visit cfcu.org beginning April 5, 2021 to cast their vote for the organization they feel is most deserving. The group with the most votes will receive a $10,000 donation, second and third place recipients will receive $5,000 each, and $2,500 will go to the fourth and fifth place recipients.
Including this year, Community Financial will have donated a total of $200,000 through the “Thumbs Up for Charity!” campaign. For more information about the “Thumbs Up for Charity!” program visit cfcu.org/ThumbsUp.

MSGCU Wins
MCUL and MCUF Awards
for Pandemic Efforts
Michigan Schools and Government Credit Union (MSGCU) is pleased to announce they have been recognized as the winner of two prestigious awards: the Michigan Credit Union League (MCUL) 2021 Innovation Award and the Michigan Credit Union Foundation (MCUF) 2021 Credit Union Difference in a Crisis Award.
These awards recognize MSGCU’s work in supporting their members, team members, and the community during the pandemic. These award-winning efforts include:
-
Providing COVID relief solutions that assisted members financially impacted by the pandemic, including 0% interest relief loans totaling more than $869,000, skip-a-pay options, loan extensions, credit limit increases, waived fees, back-to-school loans for virtual learning needs, and more.
- Assisting 137 members in applying for over $6.3M in Small Business Association Paycheck Protection Program loans.
- Donating $10,000 to support the distribution of face shields to first responders, which was matched with a grant from the Michigan Credit Union Foundation through their Community Crisis Support Grant program to provide a total of $20,000 toward this effort.
-
Donating $32,800 to support locally owned eateries and businesses through business boosting initiatives including CU Lunch Local, Macomb is Open, and Give the Gift of Local.
- Providing virtual consumer education for members and the community.
- Engaging team members through increased communications, activities to stay connected, and volunteer efforts to help our community.
“During an especially challenging year, this recognition is particularly special for us,” said Ann Jones, Vice President Marketing and Business Development. “It recognizes our efforts to quickly and continually innovate and activate where it is needed most to assist our members, team members and community. It’s a true testament to our mission and that we are at our best when we are helping others.”
The MCUL Innovation Award recognizes credit unions that have demonstrated true innovation in the last 12 months. The annual award recognizes three credit unions, based on asset size, for innovative thinking, action and community involvement. MSGCU is in the large asset category of credit unions with assets equal to or more than $400 million.
“MCUL and MCUF are proud to recognize MSGCU as an exemplary Michigan credit union of 2020,” said MCUL President/CEO Dave Adams. “Winning both the MCUL Innovation Award and MCUF Credit Union Difference in a Crisis Award is a testament to a credit union that, in the face of incredible challenges, found ways to not only keep growing their own operations, but also help the communities around come out of this crisis strong.”
The MCUF Difference in a Crisis Award celebrates outstanding crisis response activities that helped Michigan families, businesses and communities thrive during the challenges of the 2020 pandemic.

OCC’s Automobile Servicing Program Earns Prestigious National Accreditation
On-site evaluation confirms OCC has a top-notch facility, impressive faculty and a program that meets and exceeds all the criteria the ASE Education Foundation requires for accreditation
Oakland Community College’s Automobile Servicing program has achieved national accreditation by the ASE Education Foundation. ASE is the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence, recognized for its gold standards for rigorous testing and certification of auto service professionals to ensure expertise in technical knowledge and retesting for ever-advancing automotive technologies to protect consumers in the marketplace.
In order to achieve the accreditation, OCC’s Automobile Servicing program had to pass a 5-step ASE accreditation process engineered to evaluate a school’s program. It included an exhaustive review and evaluation by the Foundation to ensure industry excellence in instructional standards were met.
“It took about a year for OCC’s Automobile Servicing program team to gather the comprehensive set of information required for review,” said Jolene Chapman, dean of engineering, manufacturing and industrial technology (EMIT). “We started the process in 2019, but the COVID shut down delayed it another year.”
The follow up on-site evaluation by an ASE Educational Foundation team left no stone unturned, according to OCC’s Automobile Technology program director Claude Townsend. “The evaluation process really looks at all aspects of the program, from having a manual of standards, up-to-date curriculum, work-based learning and instruction, and even ensuring the auto shop is properly equipped, safe and not cluttered,” Townsend said. “In fact, the evaluation touches on 12 categories and 67 sub categories.”
Ken Kramer, the on-site review ASE Evaluation Team Leader spent two days going through the OCC Automobile Servicing facility with a critical eye, along with three other area auto service experts.
“We look at the type of equipment used to give students a hands-on training experience, shop safety, and observe the faculty teaching students to ensure the program and curriculum is tailored to the students’ needs and prepares them for a good paying job in the auto servicing industry,” said Kramer. “Our on-site evaluation confirmed that OCC has a top-notch facility, impressive faculty and a program that meets and exceeds all the criteria the ASE Education Foundation requires for accreditation.”
OCC’s top accreditation from the ASE is for a 5-year period with compliance reviews required at the halfway mark of two and a half years to remain accredited.
Townsend said having gone through this extensive process provides an accreditation “template” that can be used by other EMIT programs like Collision Auto Repair. Having this prestigious national accreditation gives OCC’s students one more advantage to help them in their future career goal. “In addition to the comprehensive curriculum, hands on experience with cutting edge technology, and partnership with the National Coalition of Certification Centers and Mopar CAP®/FCA students in OCC’s Automobile Servicing program receive, they will now graduate from an ASE accredited training program and embark on a successful career path,” Chapman added. “That really gives them another advantage as they enter the job market after graduation. “
