‘Golf for Hope’
to benefit Michigan
Cancer Patients
MILFORD, Mich., April 18, 2019 ‑ A scramble golf tournament on Saturday, May 18
th at Mystic Creek Golf Course, 1 Champions Circle in Milford, will benefit Michigan cancer patients who struggle to pay their bills. This is the third annual “Golf for Hope” tournament, hosted by the non-profit charity Five Points of Hope, and costs $110 per golfer or $440 per foursome. The tournament features cash prizes, raffles, auction items, a “chuck-a-putt” game, individual golf skills contests including longest drive and closest to the pin, and both breakfast and lunch. New to this year’s tournament is a Bloody Mary bar, sponsored by Charlie’s Still on Main.
Golf for Hope is a scramble format tournament with complimentary golf carts. Golfer check-in is at 8 a.m. with a continental breakfast, and an 9 a.m. shotgun start. A lunch buffet with an awards ceremony will follow. Participants may register as teams or as individuals. Anyone who pre-registers on or before May 1
st gets their name entered into a raffle for a JBL CLIP2 portable Bluetooth speaker, ideal for hanging on a golf bag or golf cart for musical entertainment while golfing or working out. To register and pre-pay for the tournament, go to the charity’s website at www.fivepointsofhope.com.
Golf for Hope is a fundraiser for Five Points of Hope, a Milford-based non-profit charity that exclusively raises money for Michigan cancer patients who are struggling financially. Social workers, on behalf of patients in need, request grants of up to $500 to help patients pay for unaffordable life essentials such as insurance deductibles, prescriptions, medical equipment and utility bills.
Tournament co-chairs Mark Francis and Marcia Young, who own the Milford-based special education consulting business Francis Young International Consultants in School Improvement, say the tournament format is ideal for both serious competitors and novice golfers. “We had some seriously competitive teams in the past and we’re hoping get more again this year! The scramble format is equally ideal for less seasoned golfers, Mark added, because they can occasionally contribute a good shot but be carried along by the stronger golfers on their teams. “A scramble is a great way for families and friends who aren’t all par golfers to compete together and have fun.”
Marcia added, “Everyone had fun on the course last year but I think it was even more fun at the dinner and auction afterward, with good-hearted charitable bidding and fabulous raffles.”
Five Points of Hope founder and president, Erin Welsh, said the charity hopes to have profits in excess of $10,000 at this year’s golfing event. “If you like to play golf and have a special place in your heart for Michigan cancer patients, our tournament is the place to be on May 18.”
Five Points of Hope
(non-profit 501c3) is based in Milford, Mich., and raises money exclusively for Michigan cancer patients in financial crisis. Medical personnel and social workers, on behalf of a patient, may request a grant of funds for a need that is unaffordable but necessary. Grants do not exceed $500 per patient, per year, and provide financial assistance for expenses such as insurance deductibles, medical equipment, prescriptions and utility bills. When issuing a grant, Five Points of Hope pays billing vendors directly on behalf of patients. Five Points of Hope began raising money for a cancer care fund in 2001 as a memorial to founder Erin Welsh’s father Michael McCusker, who died of cancer in 1999, and in celebration of life for a family friend Beth, who is a cancer survivor. The organization achieved non-profit status in 2007 and continues to be operated entirely by volunteers with no paid staff, thus maximizing funds for patient benefit.
A Night to Remember
is the organization’s inaugural fundraiser, starting in the Welsh’s living room and evolving into a large community event held every year in November at Edgewood Country Club in Commerce. It is the charity’s most well known and most profitable fundraiser. In 2018 the organization granted over $60,000 in financial assistance to deserving Michigan cancer patients.

Introduction of A Positive Thought
from Family Funeral Care – Stacie Zotkovich
Most would know me to have an aptitude for mentoring, educating, inspiring, encouraging and empowering individuals to be the most extraordinary people they can be. I am the founder of The Positive Shift, a consulting firm that does motivational speaking. I am honored to be the new Director of Business Development for Family Funeral Care. The position fits perfectly with my enthusiasm for interacting with community members and educating them on life skills. Many community members I meet with have been through similar struggles and understand we are all connected somehow and can come out of anything stronger than ever. It’s all in how we handle each situation.
It’s important to know and understand where you are in life and planning as much as possible. If you’re getting married, having a baby, changing jobs, losing a loved one or celebrating a new chapter in life, you are constantly going through stages of planning the next steps of your future.
Even funeral planning – an obviously sad life event – can be turned into a plus in people’s lives. As an educator, I am able to talk about things no one wants to discuss and connect them with an advisor who can help them plan their lasting legacy, 100% their way.
My biggest return on investment with Family Funeral Care, is to feel and see peoples comfort of understanding the process and knowledge they gained. It lets me know I have done my part, especially when they come over and give me a big hug for no other reason than to say thank you.
For more information on Family Funeral Care, email Stacie at
[email protected]
or call
248-682-0200

A Positive Thought from Family Funeral Care
If you’re having a tough start to the day…take a moment and stop what you are doing. Think about what makes you smile, or makes you happy. If you can’t find that at the moment, be happy that you woke up, you can breathe on your own, you have vision to see the beautiful things around you, or that you have the ability to smile whether it’s fake or not.
Remember, some can’t see things, get out of bed and walk, breath independently or have the ability to talk or have hand movements to text. Sometimes we need to take a step back and appreciate the small things!
Send a text to a friend/family member, letting them how happy you are to have them in your life. It could change their day and yours! Until then…Don’t Coast in Neutral, Positive Shift Ahead!

Consumers Energy Helps Launch the Next Generation of Michigan Talent Through FIRST Robotics Championship in Detroit
Ninety Teams from Michigan Compete;
State Has Most Robotics Squads in U.S.
DETROIT, Mich., April 23, 2019 – Consumers Energy is excited to sponsor the
FIRST
Championship for high school robotics students, a marquee event that brings teams from across the globe and tens of thousands of visitors to Detroit -- and a showplace for the next generation of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) talent here in Michigan.
Over 90 high school teams from Michigan are taking part in the four-day world competition at Cobo Center and Ford Field, which runs Wednesday through Saturday. Students compete with robots they have designed and built for a competition that puts them on a path to careers in the energy and other high-tech industries.
“Consumers Energy is excited to sponsor and participate in the
FIRST
Championship because it’s fun and opens so many doors for students right here in Michigan,” said Patti Poppe, president and CEO of Consumers Energy. “Michigan is leading the way for robotics, with over 500 high school teams – more than any other state.
FIRST
has cracked the code on getting students excited about STEM.”
The FIRST Championship is free and open to the public. It takes place at Detroit’s Cobo Center, with the championship matches at Ford Field. For more information and the schedule, go to
www.firstchampionship.org/detroit
.
In 2018, the Consumers Energy Foundation contributed more than $450,000 to support STEM programs, including FIRST teams at elementary, middle and high school levels across the state. Poppe also is chairing the local Michigan Executive Committee for this week’s championship, and employees are supporting the committee and competition.
“At Consumers Energy, we know how important STEM careers are, because this talent powers many areas of our company, and the future looks even brighter for these types of jobs,” said Roger Curtis, Consumers Energy’s vice president of public affairs. “We are thrilled to help nurture students to develop their innovation, engineering, decision-making and team-building talents.”
Consumers Energy, Michigan's largest energy provider, is the principal subsidiary of CMS Energy (NYSE: CMS), providing natural gas and/or electricity to 6.7 million of the state's 10 million residents in all 68 Lower Peninsula counties.
