Kari West
CarePatrol of Oakland County
248.931.4646
|
|
|
After taking an early retirement from the Healthcare Industry, Kari West found her true passion and calling when assisting Seniors and their families find safer care and housing solutions in the Senior Living Industry. While working directly in Assisted Living, Memory Care and Skilled Nursing Facilities, she found that she could not help every client that walked through her door. Whether it was due to location, amenities offered, the healthcare services, cost or just not being the right fit, she became frustrated that she had to turn families away. As a result, Kari joined CarePatrol and went back to school, passed her board exam and received the national designation of CSA (Certified Senior Advisor).
Kari considers it a privilege assisting Seniors and their families while navigating the often challenging and confusing task of finding safe and secure Senior housing. When someone makes the choice to leave their home, it can be extremely stressful. Whether choosing to move to an Independent Senior Apartment, an Assisted Living Community, a Memory Care facility or Licensed Residential Care home, or to utilize Private Duty Home Care, the knowledge of a Certified Senior Advisor like Kari is invaluable. As a FREE community service, Kari begins by carefully evaluating her client's personal and medical care needs, concerns and preferences before recommending the appropriate home and level of care. She provides a full consulting service by setting up the tours, touring the communities with you, and coordinating your move-in while representing your personal needs without bias toward any community. Kari went through the same experience when she was thrown into finding care for her own Mother and Aunt years ago. This personal experience gave her the passion that drives her today.
In addition to sharing her dedication to her work, Kari told us, “I am grateful to serve the community as a member of the LACC Board of Directors and I volunteer at my church as a care and support facilitator. I'm happily married with 5 children, 2 grandchildren and have 2 little therapy dogs. I am an avid golfer, love travelling and spending my free time entertaining our close friends and family at our home on Cedar Island Lake.”

American Rescue Plan provides more
help with health insurance coverage
New federal subsidies can help more than 67,000 Michiganders gain access to affordable health insurance under the recently passed American Rescue Plan. An additional 16,000 Michigan residents could be eligible for no-cost coverage with the existing tax subsidies. Working families could see substantial monthly savings on their health insurance when they sign up for coverage at https://healthcare.gov through Aug. 15. “A family of four making $120,000 per year could save approximately $259 per month, while a 60-year-old married couple could save as much as $943 per month for the rest of 2020,” said Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.
The federal HealthCare.gov website has been updated to reflect the extended enrollment period and the newly expanded tax credits that became available when the ARP was passed and signed into law in March. Michigan residents who already are getting health insurance through the Affordable Care Act should return to Health Care.gov and update their 2021 application to see if they qualify for expanded tax credits. Consumers can visit Michigan’s Department of Insurance and Financial Services for more information at Michigan.gov/healthinsurance or call 877-999-6442.

American Rescue Plan Tax Credits Available
to Small Employers to Provide Paid Leave to Employees
Receiving COVID-19 Vaccines
WASHINGTON — The Treasury Department and the Internal Revenue Service announced today further details of tax credits available under the American Rescue Plan to help small businesses, including providing paid leave for employees receiving COVID-19 vaccinations.
Eligible employers, such as businesses and tax-exempt organizations with fewer than 500 employees and certain governmental employers, can receive a tax credit for providing paid time off for each employee receiving the vaccine and for any time needed to recover from the vaccine. For example, if an eligible employer offers employees a paid day off in order to get vaccinated, the employer can receive a tax credit equal to the wages paid to employees for that day (up to certain limits).
The additional details, provided in a IRS website fact sheet released today by the IRS (and available in English and Spanish), spell out some basic facts about the employers eligible for the tax credits. It also provides information on how these employers may claim the credit for leave paid to employees related to COVID-19 vaccinations.
For more details on how the paid leave tax credits from the American Rescue Plan will work for employers to enable employees to get vaccinated and recover from after-effects of vaccination, as well as for other purposes, see sheet below.

SBA Announces
Official Restaurant
Revitalization Fund
Application & Guidelines
Economic relief prioritized for underserved communities
SBA Administrator Isabella Casillas Guzman announced on April 17th key details on application requirements, eligibility, and a program guide for the Restaurant Revitalization Fund (RFF). The restaurant industry has been among the hardest-hit sectors during the economic downturn caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. To help bring jobs back and revive the industry, the American Rescue Plan, signed into law by President Joe Biden, established the $28.6 billion Restaurant Revitalization Fund at the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). The SBA will administer the funds to the hardest-hit small restaurants.
At all levels, the SBA will continue engaging with stakeholder communities to inform and design delivery of financial assistance programs. As the SBA builds and prepares to roll out the program, this dedicated SBA website is the best source for up-to-date information for eligible restaurants interested in the RRF.

Genisys Credit Union Named in the
Top 15 of “Top-Performing”
Credit Unions in the United States
Genisys Credit Union has been named in the Top 15 of “Top-Performing” Credit Unions in the United States by S&P Global Market Intelligence. They would like to extend a sincere thank you to their members for their continued loyalty and entrusting Genisys to be their credit union of choice on their financial journey.
“As a member-owned institution, we actively work to sustain a strong financial base to invest in our members by offering robust technology solutions, competitive rates on loans and deposits, and expanded products and services,” said Jackie Buchanan, President and CEO of Genisys Credit Union. “Receiving recognition from the S&P Global Market for ‘Top Performance’ attests to the endless contributions the Genisys team makes for continued success.”
The credit union is one of only three Michigan credit unions to rank in the Top 50, ranking 15th nationwide. Credit unions were evaluated using six core financial performance metrics that focused on profitability, asset quality, and growth for the 12 month period ending December 31, 2020. A total of 1,727 credit unions qualified for the rankings.
Genisys has been proud to build their financial strength on the model of commitment to service excellence and teamwork to become a credit union with the highest marks of safety and soundness. For the past 29 years, the credit union has received a 5-star rating from Bauer Financial, which is held by less than 4% of financial institutions nationwide while gaining the recognition of “Sustained Superiority” and “Best of Bauer”. This ensures to the credit union’s members that their deposits are held safely, especially in times of economic downturn.
Recently they received the Crystal Award by Raddon Financial, a Fiserv Company. This coveted award gives recognition to the top two to three percent of credit unions throughout the nation based on a scorecard of growth, income, efficiency, and margin management. In addition, they’ve also received recognition as a Top Ten Company from Expertise.com as a “Best Mortgage Refinance Company in Detroit.”
Genisys was also voted a Detroit Free Press Top Workplace for the 13th year in a row and a Best & Brightest Place to Work in Metro Detroit.
The success of the credit union is rooted in the dedication and commitment of the Genisys team working towards higher standards and expectations to uphold the integrity to help families and businesses manage their finances in a trustworthy, convenient, and economical manner.

OCC Dean of College Readiness
Presents at National Education Event
Beverly Stanbrough Shares Expertise and Insights
on Interventions Supporting Student Success
Talk to a counselor at Oakland Community College and you’ll find job loss, financial concerns and feelings of isolation as just a few of the barriers to success students face, even before the pandemic. However, OCC Dean of College Readiness Beverly Stanbrough, says the College’s online resources that were escalated during the pandemic have produced significant advantages to supporting students, and many of those resources are here to stay.
Stanbrough recently presented key interventions to support students at a national online Innovative Educators webinar, Online Orientation Evolved: Expanding Support Services to Adapt to New Demands. According to Stanbrough, OCC implemented a major online transformation in 2017 when students first began mandatory online orientation, and many of those innovative online resources, are making a significant impact to ensure student success.
Stanbrough points to a drop in student suspensions due to an academic intervention. She cites examples of increased success through self-assessment, contract process and other resources available to students through one-on-one counseling visits. OCC has used a comprehensive approach for at-risk students – those have a grade point average below 2.0 – through the academic Intervention process. Before registering for the next semester’s classes, these students are required to meet with a counselor to determine the specific challenges they may be having. Counselors then work with them on individual plans and provide online, 24/7, recommended success workshops through the College’s customized orientation platform.
“Since 2017 we have seen a reduction in academic suspensions by implementing a combination of online workshops and counselor interventions,” Stanbrough said. “These resources, including the availability of 24/7 online services, have really helped keep our students in school and on track for success.” Stanbrough notes the remote environment, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, has significantly increased participation in the online workshops. Through counseling appointments, students are asked to complete a series of these workshop sessions, taken at any time that is convenient for them. They are then expected to discuss the content of the workshops at their next counseling appointment.
She believes the silver lining to the pandemic is colleges have learned to better adapt during any type of disruption for students. “The ability of teachers and faculty to reach out to students more effectively through video meetings or chat groups continues to improve. We’re more aware of recognizing crisis points for students and remain focused on helping them persist through challenging times.”

Michigan’s Lt. Governor
Serving as Keynote Speaker
for OCC Virtual
Commencement
Determination, ability to adapt, accomplishment
characterize commencement speaker, 2021 graduates
Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist II received his first computer at age five. By 16, he was building his own, and using them to set up a computer lab at a Detroit community recreation center. This motivation, ingenuity and commitment to community propelled Gilchrist through his successful career as a software engineer, social entrepreneur and community organizer, before being elected Michigan’s Lieutenant Governor in 2018.
On Saturday, June 12, 2021, at 10 a.m., Gilchrist will share insights from his journey to Oakland Community College’s Class of 2021, when he serves as keynote speaker for OCC’s virtual commencement. The fact that his remarks will be delivered in a pre-recorded address – and that the entire virtual commencement is pre-recorded – is both a sign of the times and of the challenges that students have had to overcome during OCC’s first-ever, all-online year of learning.
They are in good company. Gilchrist’s work has also been characterized by a drive to succeed and solve problems. After studying computer engineering and computer science at the University of Michigan, where he graduated with honors, he worked as a software engineer at Microsoft, helping to build SharePoint into the fastest-growing product in the company’s history. He was also a guest student at OCC while attending the University of Michigan.
He spent the next several years of his career as a social entrepreneur and community organizer, helping people in communities across America realize their full economic and political potential. Upon returning home to Detroit, Gilchrist worked in local government to help build systems that made the government more responsive, transparent and accountable to city residents. As part of the Whitmer Administration, Lieutenant Governor Gilchrist has sought to address injustice and inequity across Michigan at every level. From co-chairing the Michigan Joint Task Force on Jail and Pretrial Incarceration to helming the Coronavirus Task Force on Racial Disparities, these task forces have taken actions that saved lives and protect our most vulnerable populations.
Gilchrist and his wife, Ellen, reside in Detroit where they are raising their twins, Emily and Garlin III, and daughter, Ruby.
About OCC’s virtual commencement
Virtual commencement will start at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 12, and consist of four pre-recorded ceremonies, available on OCC’s website:
- Arts and Communications
- Business, Management, Marketing, Technology, and Engineering, Manufacturing & Industrial Technology
- General Studies
- Science, Health Sciences, and Human Services
Each ceremony’s end time will depend on the number of graduates, and each student will be featured alphabetically on a graduate recognition slide. This will include any personal message (photo, quote, video) that the student chose to submit.
