Free Food Delivery Launched for Seniors and Disabled through Two Pantries
A new food delivery service for seniors and disabled adults is now available for the Highland, Walled Lake, Waterford and White Lake communities.
Two nonprofit organizations have partnered with the Western Oakland Transportation Authority (WOTA) to create a free, no-contact service that brings food to the doorsteps of those in need. Interested participants can sign up for the program through the Hospitality House in Commerce Township or Open Door Outreach Center in Waterford.
“Open Door provides food, crisis support, vouchers for our Resale Store to over 8,000 people a year in 10 communities of the Lakes Area. We have a partnership with Spirit of Grace Church for food delivery that stopped during Covid,” Karen Myers, Executive Director of the center, said. “Open Door started to provide this service in-house. It is becoming difficult as we are discovering more people in need of food delivery. They simply are afraid to leave their house as many of our clients are vulnerable, elderly or have health challenges.”
The food boxes can be delivered either bi-weekly or monthly. Eligible participants can also use the service to coordinate transportation to medical appointments, or other transportation needs, for $2.50 per stop or $5 for a round trip.
“WOTA has been working through COVID. As an essential business, we provide low-cost, fully-accessible transportation services to our riders daily. What we found is that lack of transportation can present a major barrier to assistance,” Kim Viener, Director of WOTA, said. “In working with Hospitality House and Open Door, we were made aware of the severity of the situation. These two amazing organizations work hard to provide food but if you can’t get it to the client, then you have a problem.”
The program is open to those 55 and older and adults with disabilities age 18 and over.

Oakland County launches at home flu shots for older adults
Oakland County Health Division is launching a new program to vaccinate homebound residents 65 years and older for influenza in their homes beginning Tuesday, Oct. 27. Appointments are required. The Health Division’s Nurse on Call at 800-848-5533 will start accepting appointments on Oct. 22.
“This important service will help remove barriers for our most at-risk residents to receive a flu shot this season,” Oakland County Executive David Coulter said. “Getting a flu shot is more important than ever this year since both flu viruses and COVID-19 will be present in our community.”
Flu and COVID-19 are both respiratory illnesses, but they are caused by different viruses. Getting a flu vaccine will not protect against COVID-19, however the flu vaccination has many other benefits:
- Helps prevent flu illness
- Reduces risk of flu-associated hospitalizations
- Has been shown to reduce severity of illness if you do get the flu
- Protects you and the people around you including those more vulnerable to the disease
Public Health Nurses will visit residents’ home during a designated appointment time. Nurses can provide individuals 65 years and older a senior higher dose or regular flu shot.
“Flu vaccination is very important this year to help reduce respiratory illnesses and avoid overwhelming the healthcare system. Research is suggesting that the risk of death may double in those 60 years and older if they are infected with both flu and COVID-19,” said Dr. Russell Faust, Oakland County Medical Director. “Wear a mask, wash your hands, and practice physical distancing not only to prevent the spread of COVID-19, but also flu.”
Payment options include Medicare, Medicaid, most Blue Cross Blue Shield plans and Blue Care Network, and additional insurances. No one will be denied access to services due to lack of insurance; there is a discounted/sliding fee schedule available.
For up-to-date information, visit www.oakgov.com/health, follow the Health Division on Facebook and Twitter @publichealthOC, or call the Health Division’s Flu Shot Hotline at 800-434-3358. Nurse on Call is also available to answer questions at 800-848-5533, Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., and Saturday, 9 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Lakes Area Rotary – Team Turkey 2020
Thanksgiving morning will find Lakes Area Rotarians and friends rising early to deliver complete ready-to-eat Thanksgiving dinners to families in the Lakes Area.
We have participated with several other Rotary clubs in District 6380 to provide help to more than 200 families in the Metro Detroit area. This year Lakes Area is committed to providing a minimum of 45 meals. While we were able to secure a small grant to help with pay for these meals, we have not been able to hold our popular Beer and Wine Tasting event to raise funds to help us address this and other needs in our community.
If you have supported us in the past by sponsoring or attending, or would like to help a bit by giving back to your neighbors we invite you to visit our website http://lakesarearotary.org/ to make a donation. You will find the donation button on the left side of the page near the top. All donations are tax deductible.
A number of delivery drivers are still needed (social distancing will be in affect and masks will be worn). Driving requires you to be at a Rochester Meijer between 7-7:30 am to pick up you boxes for delivery (no contact). Delivery to 2-4 families is generally completed by 10 am so you may enjoy the balance of the holiday with your family. If you would like to be a driver let us know at mailto:[email protected].

OCC Foundation Elects Caroline Chambers
and Ken Johnson to Board of Directors
The Oakland Community College Foundation has named two key community stakeholders, Caroline Chambers and Ken Johnson, to its Board of Directors.
Chambers most recently served as the National Director of Diversity Initiatives at Comerica Bank, where she was responsible for managing internal and external diversity programs. She also served as National Director of Corporate Contributions and President of the Comerica Charitable Foundation, where she led a $16 million annual charitable giving program focused on community needs in Comerica’s primary retail markets. She holds an MPA in Public Administration from the University of Michigan.
Johnson is a successful entrepreneur who created and licensed a card game with the second highest worldwide sales. The game, Phase 10, is now produced by toy giant Mattel and sold in more than 30 countries. Johnson also owns the intellectual property rights to and invented several board and card games sold globally. He is the founder of the Inventors Academy, a free online community designed to provide education, resources and community to both new and experienced inventors, and is a popular guest speaker at inventor clubs across the country. He also serves on the boards of Spring Arbor University, Oakland Schools Education Foundation and the Investors Association of Metro Detroit.
“Chambers and Johnson bring their formidable expertise and enviable success in their professional fields to the Board,” said Dan Jenuwine, Vice Chancellor for Advancement and Executive Director, OCC Foundation. “The Foundation will be stronger for their service and commitment to student success.”
An all-volunteer Board of Directors governs the OCC Foundation. Directors are recruited from business, civic, and education leaders in Oakland County and the region, and elected to three-year renewable terms.
About the OCC Foundation

A catalyst for “outrunning hunger” in the Lakes Region of Southeast Michigan. 2011-2019, Outrun Hunger has raised $119,212 feeding 5,960 families. Benefiting Hospitality House of Commerce and Open Door Outreach Center of Waterford food pantries.
In 2011 we launched Outrun Hunger (a 5K race for charity) to raise money to feed 100 families during the holiday season. Today we are able to feed over 900 families through your support. 100% of the race registration and donations (excluding online transaction fees) goes towards this goal. In addition, a number of local area business have donated their time, products and/or services for the event. 2019 marked our ninth (9th) annual charity race with the support from our community, and our expectations were exceeded yet another year:
· 273 racers registered from our community
· 66 volunteers from our community and Grace Community Church (gotgrace.info)
· 86 donors graciously gave
· 23 sponsors supported our race
· $18,636 was raised for Hospitality House in Commerce and Open Door Outreach Center in Waterford
· 931 families in the Lakes Region will now be able to enjoy a hot meal at Thanksgiving and Christmas
Exciting results, but our job isn't done. According to our partner organizations, they served 915 families and 1,982 individuals in November and December 2019. The "demand" often overwhelms the "supply."
We pray that Outrun Hunger continues to be a charitable event that is both fun for you AND meaningful for our community. We’d love to have you join us this year, Saturday, November 14, 2020 at 10:00am. In the meantime, you can “like” us on Facebook to stay connected with the Outrun Hunger family, (facebook.com/outrunhunger).

Genisys Credit Union raised $1,100 for Miracle Jeans Day
Auburn Hills, MI. - Oct. 29, 2020 - In September, Genisys Credit Union employees went casual for kids on the annual Miracle Jeans Day to raise $1,100 for Beaumont Children’s Hospital in Royal Oak, a local Children’s Miracle Network Hospital (CMN Hospitals).
“At Genisys, we work hard to live out our values - ‘We Improve our Community’, “ said Jackie Buchanan, President & CEO of Genisys Credit Union. “We admire the courage and strength of our youngest community members and are proud to be able to give back to our local CMN hospital.”
This annual, one-day event, organized through Credit Union for Kids (CU4Kids), lets credit union employees around the country wear jeans for a day for a $5 donation. All proceeds go towards a local CMN Hospital, whose mission is to save and improve the lives of as many children as possible by raising funds to cover the cost of care that is not covered by Medicaid and insurance programs.
“Through CMN’s CU4Kids partnership, Genisys Credit Union has helped raise funds for essential equipment and programs needed for some of Beaumont Children’s youngest patients,” said Sara Klakulak, Manager Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals - Beaumont Health. “Going ‘casual for kids’ during Miracle Jeans Day is just one way they provide their employees with another fun and easy way to help local kids feel better. We are so grateful for their continued support.”
Genisys Credit Union with Main St. Oakland County
award Micro Business Grants
Auburn Hills, MI. - Oct. 27, 2020 - Genisys Credit Union with Main St. Oakland County awarded five area businesses and a downtown development authority micro business grants as part of their Spirit of Main St. Grant Start-Up program.
The Marketplace in Berkley, Maruca’s Kitchen in Holly, 20 Front Street in Lake Orion, Cookies and Cream in Lake Orion, Everybody Inc. by Dutton Farm in Pontiac, and the Ortonville Downtown Development Authority have been awarded. These grants will help support their expanding business initiatives and provide a financial boost from impacts by the coronavirus pandemic.
“We are proud to partner with the Main Street Oakland County to be able to provide small businesses the opportunity to build stronger local economies and communities,” said Jackie Buchanan, President & CEO of Genisys Credit Union. “The funding of these grants support small businesses, especially in times of economic downturns, to ensure area downtowns are destinations for residents and visitors alike.”
One of the recipients, Everybody Inc. by Dutton Farm, used their grant for signage in their new location inside McLaren Oakland Hospital’s Administrative building in Pontiac. Everybody Inc. creates natural, high-quality bath and body products, but their mission is to place a focus on providing long-term solutions to chronic unemployment for people with disabilities. On October 16th, Genisys was proud to take part in their ribbon-cutting ceremony and looks forward to seeing them succeed in their new location.
This is the third year Genisys has partnered with Main Street Oakland County to provide the grants, which can be used for a variety of needs such as payroll to paying vendors to structural improvements. Earlier in the year, Trails Edge Cafe in Wixom, the Liberty Bar in Pontiac, and Union Joint Restaurants in Clarkston received grants.

During the Day of Service, team members made 319 blankets for Fleece and Thank You, a local organization dedicated to comforting children receiving hospital care, donated 22 pints of blood for the American Red Cross, potentially saving 22 lives, and donated $3,800 and walked more than 600 miles in support of American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. Team members also cared for shelter animals and delivered food to families in need.
“MSGCU is an organization that thrives on caring for the communities we serve and is honored to make this donation and give back 1,000 hours to charities and organizations that need our support more than ever,” said MSGCU Vice President of Human Resources, Karen Haneline.
Supporting hundreds of local eateries
As part of an industry-wide movement, MSGCU team members participated in CU Lunch Local. Now in its ninth year, CU Lunch Local promotes all of the good things credit unions do to help local businesses thrive. On Tuesday, October 13, MSGCU team members purchased lunch from their favorite locally-owned eateries, equating to a “cash mob” of more than $3,700.
“Supporting local restaurants has never been more important, given the struggle brought on by the pandemic,” said MSGCU Vice President of Marketing and Business Development, Ann Jones. “We are pleased to support the revitalization of our local eateries while enjoying a delicious lunch.”
Showing appreciation for 130,000 members
MSGCU is humbled to serve more than 130,000 members who place a great deal of trust in the credit union as their financial partner. To show its gratitude, the credit union annually celebrates Member Appreciation Day on the third Thursday of October. This year, members were showered with many thanks and gifted with free paper shredding, refreshments (individually packaged to keep members safe), and a safety key. This portable multi-use tool helps members avoid direct contact with public surfaces and can be used to press buttons, pull handles or doorknobs, push doors, and touch screens.
“We all have experienced a tremendous amount of change this year,” says MSGCU President/CEO Peter Gates, “There is one thing at MSGCU that will always remain constant: our dedication to members and the ‘people helping people’ philosophy. We continue to be grateful for the opportunity to give back to the community and serve members.”

Teriyaki Madness Introduces Program to
Thank Teachers with Teriyaki
The fast-growing franchise is teaming up with guests
to split the cost of a hot lunch bar for WOK-star educators.
Wixom, MI— Teachers have long been the unsung heroes of the community, but since COVID-19 hit, have been going the extra mile (or ten) for students and their families as they navigate the challenges of in-person learning, remote learning, hybrid models and everything in between. That’s why Teriyaki Madness has decided to show its appreciation to teachers for their hard work in getting families through the pandemic unscathed (or as unscathed as possible, given the circumstances). Starting October 27, the fan-favorite teriyaki franchise is partnering with parents and families to give back to rock-star educators with the Wok-Star Teacher Teriyaki Bar.
By ordering the Wok-Star Teacher Teriyaki Bar, guests will pay half the cost of a full hot lunch bar for teachers at a school of their choice, with Teriyaki Madness matching and picking up the rest. The limited-time program will run from October 27 to December 18.
Each Wok-Star Bar includes the brand’s mouth-watering chicken teriyaki and spicy chicken offerings, along with white and brown rice, stir-fried veggies and Teriyaki Madness’s famous house-made teriyaki sauce. The package includes ten bowls or trays that can feed up to ten hungry teachers.
EVP of Marketing Jodi Boyce hopes the initiative will bring communities together during what has been a difficult and complicated time for educators, students and parents across the United States.
“Educators throughout the country have been working hard to keep students on track in these difficult times, under the most challenging and stressful circumstances anyone has faced,” said Boyce. “I witnessed the back-to-school chaos firsthand with my sons who are in elementary and middle school and I knew we had to do something to help them stay sane and fed. With this Wok-Star Teacher Bar initiative, we’re hoping to make their hectic lives just a little better and bring them a dose of happiness to their day with a delicious lunch.”
In May Teriyaki Madness introduced its Pay-It-Forward campaign, which asked customers to team up with the brand to split the cost of meals for healthcare workers. Since that campaign launched, Teriyaki Madness and its fans have provided more than 6,000 meals to healthcare professionals and first responders across the country. Earlier this fall, the brand also kicked off the Share-A-Bowl Meal promotion to bring families together during the pandemic.
Boyce says the franchise is committed to finding new ways to support local communities and provide families with delicious, customizable meals and plenty of healthy (or not) options, as well as provide opportunities for franchisees to drive sales in their local markets.
ABOUT TERIYAKI MADNESS:
Fast-casual teriyaki shop franchise Teriyaki Madness is committed to unconditionally satisfying guests by offering delicious, made-to-order, healthy (or not) bowls, apps and sides, prepared with fresh, all-natural ingredients served quickly and at a reasonable price. Advancing Care for the
Common Good:
A Vision for Change
As members of Trinity Health, St. Joe's has created an advocacy campaign, Care for the Common Good, to drive policy change we believe needs to happen to address the health care concerns we face today. Our campaign is based on four principles:
· Everyone should have access to high-quality, comprehensive health care.
· Investment in Public Health is critical to our nation's safety and economic health.
· Improving the health of communities is the right thing to do.
· Affordable, high-value health care is achievable.
It has become clear that our nation is at a critical point in history. With a convergence of a global pandemic, a health care delivery system that fails to meet the needs of all, a challenged public health system, and societal unrest stemming from racial inequality, it's time to address the issues impacting the health of all Americans.
With the belief that policy change is necessary, a new campaign is underway. Join Saint Joseph Mercy Health System and its parent organization Trinity Health in its Care for the Common Good campaign. The goal is to empower and inspire others to take part in the national dialogue to improve our nation’s health care delivery system. While not intended to impact the outcome of any election, engaging in the national dialogue on how all Americans receive health care allows us to promote a bipartisan vision for what we believe the system must achieve.
Please visit the campaign webpage to learn more, share this information on social media, and please sign our petition to show your support for these principles. Your support will be shared with presidential candidates and others who will be developing policy agenda's in both Washington D.C. and state capitols in 2021. Together, we can be the change our communities desperately need to live their best lives.

LaFontaine Automotive Group, the fastest-growing dealer group in Michigan, today announced it has acquired Shuman Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, located at the corner of N. Pontiac Trail and S. Commerce in Walled Lake.
“Bob Shuman and his team did a tremendous job growing the family business and becoming engrained in the local community. We look to take that strong, customer-focused foundation and enhance it through our personalized service and ‘Family Deal’ experience we’ve been known for over the last 40 years of business,” said Ryan LaFontaine, Chief Operating Officer, LaFontaine Automotive Group. “On behalf of our entire team at LaFontaine Automotive Group and my family, we are extremely excited to expand and reinforce our presence in Oakland County and surrounding communities. With the addition of our new Walled Lake location, we will be the largest Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram dealer in Michigan, with five locations.”
“I’m excited for the next chapter in my family’s legacy and am grateful to the LaFontaine family for their enthusiasm and commitment to my employees, our customers and the greater Walled Lake community,” said Bob Shuman, Dealer Principal, Shuman CDJR of Walled Lake. “The LaFontaine family is the perfect fit to pass the reigns to, as our principals and focus on what makes a great owner and community partner are aligned. I look forward to watching the dedicated Walled Lake team continue to grow and know that the future is very bright.”
Founded in 1980 by Michael Sr. and Maureen LaFontaine, the nationally-recognized LaFontaine Automotive Group now includes 40 retail franchises, five collision centers and 19 Michigan retail locations. The Group employs over 1,600 individuals. It’s the ongoing mission of the LaFontaine family and passionate team members to personalize the automotive experience by building lifelong relationships that connect families and strengthen communities. The Group sold 35,081 vehicles in 2019 and is ranked as the 52nd largest dealer group based in the U.S. by Automotive News.
“Our Group and dedicated team members have been involved with the greater Oakland County community for nearly forty years, supporting organizations and events such as Jay’s Juniors, Angels of Hope, Children’s Miracle Network, Make-A-Wish, YMCA – Strong Kids Campaign, and many other worthy causes,” said Kelley LaFontaine, Vice President, LaFontaine Automotive Group. “Supporting our local communities and giving back to those less fortunate has been a cornerstone of my mom’s everlasting legacy and know that with this new location, we will be able to explore new opportunities that positively impact the lives of those living and working in the Walled Lake area.”

MDHHS provides COVID-19 guidance for holiday travel/gatherings
The holiday season will be different for Michiganders this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. To ensure families do not miss out on being together during the holidays, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) has issued guidance on Traveling for the Holidays to stay safe while on the road or in the air.
Staying home is the best way to protect yourself and others. However, if you decide to travel for the holidays, follow these safety measures to protect yourself and others from COVID-19:
• Wear a mask and keep your nose and mouth covered when in public places.
• Avoid close contact by staying at least 6 feet apart from anyone who is not from
your household.
• Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or use hand
sanitizer (with at least 60% alcohol).
• Avoid contact with anyone who is sick.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
In addition to the MDHHS guidance, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has the following resources to help determine if you should travel during the holidays:
Individuals who should avoid attending or hosting in-person holiday celebrations with people who do not live in their household, include those who:
• Have symptoms of COVID-19 or are waiting for COVID-19 viral test results.
• May have been exposed to someone with COVID-19 in the last 14 days.
• Are at increased risk for severe illness from COVID-19, or live or work with
someone at increased risk of severe illness.
The new guidance also urges Michiganders to consider hosting virtual festivities instead of in-person holiday gatherings if there is a risk of community spread based on the risk identified in the MI Safe Start map. If an in-person gathering is hosted, it should be held outdoors if possible. Indoor festivities should avoid crowded, poorly ventilated or fully enclosed indoor spaces, and should be limited to 10 people or less per MDHHS Oct. 9 Emergency Epidemic Order. In addition, attendees of indoor or outdoor festivities should:
• Social distance.
• Wear cloth masks.
• Wash hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
• Keep safe around food drinks, including following good hygiene and limiting the
amount of people in areas where food is prepared.
• Bring food and drinks for themselves and members of their household. Avoid
potluck gatherings.
• Have one person serve all shareable food and consider using single-use items
for condiments, plates and utensils.
