News & Announcements
June 2020
Dear Lakesiders,
Once again, we bring news from Lakeside in the form of our weekly update as we are about to begin the summer Chautauqua season. We continue to monitor the effects of COVID-19 and follow local and state health directives while opening our venues as soon as it is safe to do so. We hope this note finds you and your family healthy and safe.

Most of our recreational venues will open by the weekend, including the Pool at the Grindley Aquatic & Wellness Campus and all playgrounds. We will also begin hosting entertainment outdoors in Bettinger Park, with nightly events or Vespers at the Steel Memorial Bandstand. Please see below for information about Lakeside's venues and programs.
Is the Pool opening?
YES! The Pool at the Grindley Aquatic & Wellness Campus opens Saturday, June 20 with new procedures, online reservations and safety protocols in place during the hours of operation.
The pool will be available for open swim in 2-hour time slots. Reservations may be made 24 hours in advance. Chairs and tables are available for use but cannot be moved as they are placed to provide 6 feet of space for social distancing. It is up to swimmers to maintain social distancing while in the water.

To use the pool, make an online reservation for one of the 2-hour timeslots. Only 60 guests permitted per timeslot. Pool reservations will be available for the following timeslots:

Monday-Saturday: 10 a.m.-12 p.m., 12:30-2:30 p.m. and 3-5 p.m.
Sunday: 12-2 p.m. and 2:30-4:30 p.m.

All guests are required to leave once the 2-hour timeslot expires for sanitation of the facility. Please note that the slides, water features and in-water volleyball and basketball are closed this summer. There will be no swim lessons this summer. Initially there will be no water aerobics classes, but these may be added if timeslots and instructors can be arranged.

For Lap Swim, online reservations for 30-minute timeslots will be available (must be age 14+). Lap Swim reservations are available Monday-Saturday: 7:30-8 a.m., 8-8:30 a.m., 8:30-9 a.m., 9-9:30 a.m., 5:30-6 p.m. and 6-6:30 p.m.; and Sunday: 5-5:30 p.m. and 5:30-6 p.m. Lap swimming will be limited to one person per lane.

The reservation process for the Pool and Lap Swim will be communicated later this week.
Are the Baby Pool & Splash Park open?
The Baby Pool and Splash Park remain closed at this time. The high lake water and storm debris, as well as the State of Ohio regulations are making it difficult to open these venues at this time. We will revisit this decision as the summer progresses.
Is the Fitness Room open?
YES! The Magruder Hospital Fitness Room opens Monday, June 15 with new procedures, online reservations , safety protocols and hours of operation in place. Please note that the Wellness Center building, restrooms and Drackett Hall are closed at this time. Public restrooms are available on the East side of the Pool entrance building.

To use the Fitness Room, make an online reservation for a 50-minute timeslot (available 24 hours in advance). Must be age 14+ to use the Fitness Room. Only 4 guests permitted per timeslot. Each 50-minute timeslot begins at the top of the hour. All guests are required to leave once the 50-minute timeslot expires for sanitation of the facility.

The Fitness Room is open Monday: 6 a.m.-6 p.m., Tuesday: 6 a.m.-8 p.m., Wednesday: closed, Thursday: 6 a.m.-8 p.m., Friday: 6 a.m.-6 p.m., Saturday: 6 a.m.-2 p.m., and Sunday: closed. View additional operational procedures at .
Are Playgrounds, Basketball and Sand Volleyball Courts, and Gaga Ball opening?
YES! Playgrounds in Bettinger Park, Perry Park, Cherry Avenue and Cedar Avenue (Campground) open Saturday, June 20. It is up to parents to help children to be safe and maintain social distancing while playing in the playgrounds. Playgrounds are open until dusk. Please note that Supervised Playground will not be offered this summer.
The Basketball and Sand Volleyball Courts open Monday, June 15. Gaga Ball in Cherry Park will not be offered this summer.
Will there be fireworks on the Fourth of July?
YES! Fireworks will begin at 9:45 p.m. Saturday, July 4. A barge will launch the fireworks starting from the west end of the lakefront (near the Gundlach Garden) and travel east until Perry Park so that all can practice safe social distancing along the entire lakefront. Watch for signs at the Pavilion about dock closure for the day. Please note: guests are not permitted to reserve space for the fireworks until Saturday, July 4. Blankets and chairs may be removed by staff if necessary. In the event of inclement weather, the fireworks will be moved to Sunday, July 5.
Is Hoover Auditorium open?
NO, it was decided in May that Hoover Auditorium would be closed for the summer. However, we are offering a new entertainment lineup outdoors at the Steele Memorial Bandstand and Pavilion to practice safe social distancing.

The first two weeks of the Chautauqua programming season will feature Ohio artists, such as Helen Welch and The Drowsy Lads, among others. Most of our marquee Hoover Auditorium shows have been cancelled or postponed to future seasons. Other events, like God Squad, MGM, Religious Life Seminars and fitness classes, will also be held outdoors.

Programs that will be offered virtually include the Community Worship Services, Faith of Living Hour, Chautauqua Lecture Series, Wellness Seminars, some Rhein Center classes, and more. Most programs will be free, while others will require registration and a fee. We will even be offering special virtual events with featured entertainers and artists throughout the summer, like Jeff Daniels on June 25

Visit to view onsite and virtual programs as they are finalized.
