August 5, 2020

We're excited to be participating again in Mayor Lori Lightfoot's "Make Way for Dining" program! 25+ restaurants and food establishments along Broadway from Belmont to Diversey will participate. Sidewalk patios will be extended into the street, and there will be a few tables spread out throughout Broadway and Sheffield for those who would like to do carry-out.

All social distancing, face covering, and other guidelines will be followed. The 36 Bus on Broadway will be rerouted (check the CTA website for updates) and Barry, Oakdale, and Briar will become two way streets. Please see below for the map of this weekend's street closures.

Please click here for a list of participating restaurants, more information about street closures, and the Dine Out program.

Thank you to our sponsors, Byline Bank and Southern Glazer's Wine & Spirits, for making Dine Out possible!

Want to See More Neighborhood Programs like Dine Out?
Want to See Small Businesses Thrive After COVID-19?

Consider Making a Donation to the Lakeview East Chamber of Commerce!

If you have ever attended the Annual Lakeview East Festival of the Arts, Belmont Sheffield Music Festival, Halloween Hoopla, Wine Stroll, Annual Tree Lighting, last year's Wrigleyville Wonderland, the new Dine Out program, or any of the countless other community events we've put on for the community, you know how much we love the residents and businesses of Lakeview East and how incredibly proud we are to represent this neighborhood. We love hosting these events as much as you love attending, but they are also quite expensive to produce.

Your donation to the Lakeview East Chamber of Commerce will help us continue support for our local small businesses during a time when they need us most, as well as bring our community together as we begin to reopen and, eventually, recover. After all, our local small businesses are what makes our neighborhood so dynamic, unique, and a place that truly feels like home. We will do whatever it takes to help keep it that way!

Please consider making a donation to the Lakeview East Chamber of Commerce here.

Long Overdue has an Exciting Project to Announce: We're Working on a Book about Lakeview East!
But instead of just having one writer, we want this to be a compilation of stories from anyone in our community. From residents who've lived here their entire life to people who moved here last summer. Restaurant owners, small business owners, people who love doing karaoke at Friar Tuck's, everyone is welcome. These can be your personal memories, history about Lakeview, your favorite spots, etc. To be involved or if you have any questions email Chris O'Brien at [email protected].
Unabridged Bookstore Virtual Reading: "Like Me: Life with My Mother and Her Invisible Friends"

On Wednesday, August 12th, we will host a reading to celebrate the  release of Like Me: Life with My Mother and Her Invisible Friends by Dan Mathews. Dan Mathews is PETA's Director of Campaigns, increasing awareness of animal rights through high-profile, sometimes controversial, events. The author will be joined in conversation by award-winning actor Alan Cumming.

For more information about the book and the event, please visit our website.
Please join Second Unitarian Church's Anti-Racism Committee (ARC) for a Community Conversation: Reflections on Policing, on Tuesday, August 11, 2020 from 7:00-8:30pm via Zoom.

As a country, and in Chicago, policing tactics are getting more widespread scrutiny after officer Derek Chauvin brutally killed George Floyd in Minneapolis on May 25, 2020. From its racist beginnings in South Carolina in the late 1600s, when by law any white person could "capture and punish a run-away slave," to the present, where police can kill Black people with impunity, policing must be critically examined. ARC is providing a forum for members and friends of Second Unitarian Church to explore our own experiences with policing, how we define policing, and how we might reimagine policing through the lens of social justice.

In preparation for this event, we suggest reading the following timeline: Policing in the USA: 1492 - present.

We look forward to seeing you at this event. To register, please click HERE. You will be sent login information for the event on the morning of Tuesday, August 11th.

Questions regarding this event can be directed to Susan Zeigler at [email protected].

Notice of License Extension Due to COVID-19 Outbreak
DEPARTMENT OF BUSINESS AFFAIRS AND CONSUMER PROTECTION CITY OF CHICAGO:

Be advised that on July 22, 2020, the Chicago City Council passed Ordinance 2020-2915, a COVID-19 emergency-related measure to extend licenses that expire during the pandemic.
Licenses and Emerging Business Permits issued by the Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection ("BACP") under Title 4 or Title 9 of the Municipal Code of Chicago ("MCC") with an expiration date between March 15, 2020, and September 30, 2020 will hereby be considered active until October 30, 2020.

Note that this ordinance
does not change the fee for renewal nor prorate any fees paid for renewal of a license, nor change the future renewal date of a license. Within 30 days following the repeal of the ordinance on September 30, 2020, impacted licensees will be expected to pay the full fee associated with their license in order to renew. License renewal fees can be found in Chapter 4-5 of the MCC.

Expanded Outdoor Dining for Bars, Taverns, & Breweries Without a Retail Food License
Due to the recent rise in community cases of COVID-19, the City of Chicago has reinstated certain restrictions for businesses, including the closure of indoor service for bars, taverns, breweries and other establishments that serve alcohol without a retail food license.

Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot along with Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection (BACP) Commissioner Rosa Escareño and Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) Commissioner Gia Biagi announced an expansion of its Outdoor Dining Program that has already allowed over 250 bars and restaurants throughout the city to operate outdoors during the Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak.

As part of this effort to support Chicago's businesses, the City announced new reforms to the Expanded Outdoor Dining Program that will make it easier for bars, taverns and breweries affected by the latest rollback of the reopening guidelines to operate outdoors.

Effective immediately, individual establishments that serve alcohol without a Retail Food License may apply to use this program to temporarily operate on the sidewalk in front of their establishment, and all restaurants and bars may use the permit in outdoor areas that would typically require an Outdoor Patio License.

To learn more about the Expanded Outdoor Dining Permit and to apply, please click here or scroll down to the next section. To help businesses navigate the permit, the City will be holding a webinar Thursday, August 6 at 2:00pm. To register, visit chicago.gov/businessworkshops.
Sidewalk Cafes & Expanded Outdoor Dining
The sidewalk café reform ordinance includes the following provisions:
  1. 75% permit fee reduction
  2. Ability to extend sidewalk cafés in front of a neighboring property
  3. Expedited permit issuance process
Click here for more information. BACP has issued an updated FAQ on the process for an extended sidewalk café permit.

If you wish to extend your sidewalk cafe beyond your property line, please remember you cannot be in front of another food establishment or liquor store. You must ask permission from the property owner if you are NOT curbside. Please update your COI's. Here is the application. You also can not block an entryway.

Let us assist you with your permits for expanding your outdoor dining. Please email us for an appointment at [email protected].
