Community celebrates opening of new LHS wing

Class Presidents Ella Atfield, Nate Bilski and Gabby Eisel are joined by Student Council President Brian Donahoe to cut the ribbon on the new LHS wing.

Hundreds turned out to enjoy the dedication of the new Lakewood High Performing Arts & Physical Education Wing on a hot but beautiful Sunday afternoon on Aug. 20. The dedication marked the near completion of the final construction project of the District's Facilities Master Plan. The gym is scheduled to open Nov. 1.  Read More

From left: Grace Cooper, Sean Miller, Grace Gill, Maggie McHugh and Violet Jouriles.

Congatulations to the five Lakewood High musicians chosen to represent Lakewood High at the Ohio Music Educators Association's Northeast Ohio Region Orchestra. One of the five, sophomore cellist Grace Gill, was also selected to be part of the All-State Orchestra.  Students must qualify for the Region Orchestra to be eligible for a spot with the All-State Orchestra. The All-State ensemble performs at the OMEA annual conference in February in Columbus. In addition to Grace Gill, the following students were selected for the Region Orchestra, which will perform in November at Cleveland State: seniors Grace Cooper (bass) and Maggie McHugh (violin) and juniors Violet Jouriles (violin) and Sean Miller (viola).
Annual Board/PTA Ice Cream Social is Sept. 5
Please join the members of the Board of Education and the Lakewood Council of PTAs for their annual Ice Cream Social at 6:15 pm on Tuesday, Sept. 5 in the Garfield Middle School gym. The community is invited to enjoy free ice cream with all the toppings and listen to music from our middle school band members from Garfield and Harding. The Board will hold its regular meeting at 7 pm following the social. This District tradition is a great way to kick off the school year and meet your elected officials!

Fitness Fits Everyone set for Sept. 30
Jordan Family Foundation's 8th Annual  Fitness Fits Everyone will be held  Saturday, September 30 from  1 - 5 pm at Lakewood Park. The event will turn the park into a huge playground with thousands taking part in fun and energizing activities for kids and families.   One of the event's most popular activities is back again - the Giant Dunk Tank.    Children will be able to throw baseballs to dunk their teachers and principals.

Fitness Fits Everyone  is a festival-style, heart-healthy and activity-based event that is just one way Jordan's Family Foundation is raising awareness of pediatric heart disease and fighting childhood obesity.  Last year's  Fitness Fits Everyone  had over 55 national and local organizations including the Cleveland CAVS, Cleveland Browns, American Heart Association, Skyzone, and many others.    Enjoy great food from the Barrios food truck and live music on the big stage from Lakewood's own Smiley Baldazar Band.

CWRU hosting series on drug abuse epidemic
This four-part weekly series: "Substance Abuse: An American Epidemic, A Community's Perspective," is geared toward middle school and high school students and their parents as well as community members and those who work with addicted patients. For more information, read this flyer.
