: Lakewood Yacht Club played host to the RS21 North American Championship June 19-21, 2020.
Lakewood supplied the boats from their fleet of 12 RS21s. A total of 17 boats participated in this three-day event on Clear Lake, with each team consisting of three-four sailors.
Although no LYC members took top honors, 10 of the entries were captained by LYC sailors.
Sponsors included RS Sailing, Sail22, Harken, and Regatta Premium Craft Mixers, KO Sailing, as well as Lakewood Yacht Club Series Sponsors Blackburn Marine, Sea Lake Yachts, Pelican Insurance Agency, and Severance Insurance Agency.
Lakewood's purchase of the keelboat fleet was two-fold. First, it gives members an opportunity to charter boats for racing, fleet racing, adult Learn to Sail classes and clinics, and provide its youth sailors a boat to grow into. Second, the Club hopes the fleet will entice young sailors fresh out of college or building a family who might typically have to choose between a membership or a boat purchase, but cannot afford both, to choose membership at LYC and take advantage of the fleet and enjoy the social aspects that membership provides.
