Seabrook, TX: Lakewood Yacht Club is proud to welcome home the Club’s team competing in the 2022 New York Yacht Club Resolute Cup held September 14-17 in Newport, Rhode Island.
The invitation-only event, sailed every two years on the waters of Narragansett Bay, is the most prestigious Corinthian regatta in the country, with the top team earning a berth in the Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup.
The Lakewood Yacht Club team of skipper Danny Pletsch with crew Casey Lambert, Evan Smith, and Chandler Self qualified for the top gold fleet with a strong start in the series. With a final overall finish of 8th out of the 23 teams from across the country, the team is both proud and resolved to return in two years for the win. Other Texas teams sailed strong as well. Austin Yacht Club, with Lakewood member Chris Lewis at the helm, finished 10th overall. Fort Worth Boat Club and Houston Yacht Club also competed.
For Lakewood Yacht Club, the honor of competing at this level is a point of pride for both the Club and our sailing community. “To compete as a Club, “ said Paul Dunphey, Lakewood Yacht Club Vice Commodore, “represents Lakewood’s commitment to the sport of sailboat racing regionally and nationally. The hospitality shown by New York Yacht Club sets a bar for all our events.”
The Resolute Cup was sailed in the RS21 keelboat. In 2020, Lakewood Yacht Club invested in a matched fleet of twelve RS21 keelboats for competition and member use. “The growth of this fun and the competitive fleet is a new area for Lakewood Yacht Club,” said Dunphey. “As a club, we are proud of our Resolute Cup team.”
