Seabrook, TX: Lakewood's 2018 Annual Blessing of the Fleet is scheduled for Sunday, March 25. This traditional naval ceremony began centuries ago and is still recognized as a way to formally bless vessels.
"It's an exciting event for captains, crew members, and the whole family," says Fleet Captain Mike Downs. "Boats will "Dress Ship" as they are cleaned, waxed, and decorated with festive signal flags."
Lakewood members will have the opportunity to bless their new boat, an existing vessel not yet christened or re-christen their boat.
Traditional Irish bagpipers and the award-winning Clear Lake High School marching band will entertain as Reverend Rusti Moore, LYC Fleet Chaplain, implores safety and good fortune upon the entire LYC fleet.
"Our club stays very active throughout the year, but the annual Blessing of the Fleet is one of the largest events of the year," says Commodore Ash Walker. "Our member volunteers and staff work tirelessly to ensure that it's always an exciting and fun-filled weekend."
Blessing participants are officially welcomed into the fleet, and they receive a commemorative plaque, the trademark Lakewood burgee and a bottle of champagne to "bathe the bow."
Friends and family are invited to attend and are encouraged to dress for the occasion. Ladies typically shop for classy nautical attire, while men will don their classic white slacks and dark blazers.
The Lakewood Clubhouse and grounds will be decorated for the occasion and a variety of functions and social gatherings will be in full swing for members and guests to choose from including a poolside soiree, champagne brunch and a 'Tour de Fleet' after the blessing.
The blessing will start Sunday, March 25th at 2 PM. For more information, contact the LYC Harbor Administrator at
