Housing Outreach Summer Update
Program impact felt throughout the community

It has been a busy and exciting summer for the LakewoodAlive Housing Outreach Program. Led by Interim Director Laura Krawczyk and Housing Outreach Coordinator Cary Spath, LakewoodAlive has  coordinated 200 volunteers who have provided over 1,100 hours of service to the community. From Birdtown to the West End, LakewoodAlive's Housing Outreach Program is working to strengthen the community's economic foundation: homes.

 

Cliffs Natural Resources Helps with Eight Projects Throughout Lakewood

June 21 - Cliffs Natural Resources partnered with LakewoodAlive to bring 104 employees to Lakewood for the company's Cliffs Cares Day of Service.

One team painted a home on Quail as part of LakewoodAlive's Paint Lakewood Program
Another team installed a new soffit and gutters at the Skate House at Lakewood Park 
The volunteers undertook eight projects including: painting houses, enhancing a vacant lot, making repairs to historic properties, and building planter boxes. The total investment for this event was upwards of $20,000.

Housing Education Series 
Care and Feeding of your Lakewood Home

LakewoodAlive's new housing education series, "Care and Feeding of Your Lakewood Home" is helping Lakewood homeowners achieve long-term success and stability by providing comprehensive education, information and support to aid them in improving and repairing their homes. Nearly 100 individuals have attended the four courses taught thus far. Topics have included "Old Home Maintenance and Efficiency," "Curb Appeal 101" and more. The next event will be with Environmental Health Watch, 10:30 A.M. August 17 at University of Akron Lakewood. This event is free and open to the public. Complimentary parking is available in the rear.

Faith in the Neighborhood

June 27-30 - Volunteers from Lakewood United Methodist Church invested nearly 175 volunteer hours to prepare and paint a house on Cordova during their annual Faith in the Neighborhood event. Special thanks go out to Sherwin Williams for providing the paint and to Panera Bread for providing breakfast to the volunteers.

City Edge Church
Serve the City Sunday

June 30 - Friends from City Edge Church put the finishing touches on a Cliffs Natural Resources project by installing planter boxes along the east end of Madison Avenue. Fifteen Lakewood businesses have committed to maintaining these planters in an effort to beautify the historic corridor.

Two teams from Recovery Resources took on projects this summer with the Housing Outreach Program. These dedicated young people scraped a garage for a homeowner involved in the paint Lakewood program and cleared debris out of an overgrown backyard during the course of two weeks in June.

Monty Python's Spamalot

July 12 - August 18

The Beck Center for the Arts, 17801 Detroit Avenue, Lakewood

Beck Center for the Arts presents Monty Python's Spamalot on the Mackey Main Stage, Winner of three Tony Awards including Best Musical, Monty Python's Spamalot is the outrageous musical comedy "lovingly ripped off" from the cult classic motion picture Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Show times are 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 3 p.m. Sundays. Tickets are now on sale. Tickets for Spamalot are $28 for adults, $25 for seniors (65 and older), $12 for students (with valid I.D.), and $10 for children (12 and under). An additional $3 service fee per ticket is applied at the time of purchase. Preview Night on Thursday, July 11 is $10 with general admission seating. Group discounts (13 or more) are available. 36th Annual Lakewood Arts Festival 
Saturday August 3, 100:00 A.M. - 6:00 P.M.
Downtown Lakewood 
The 36th Annual Lakewood Arts Festival will take place on Saturday, August 3, 2013 from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Detroit Avenue between Marlowe and Elmwood Avenues.  This year's festival is a juried exhibition of all media in fine arts and crafts and will feature 164 artists from across the country and over 30 additional booths operated by various not-for-profit organizations and offering food, beverages, products and activities for children.  In addition, live music will be performed throughout the day at City Center Park, located at Cook and Detroit Avenues. Detroit Avenue in downtown Lakewood will be closed to traffic between 5:30 AM and 9:00 PM along Detroit Avenue between Marlowe and Elmwood Avenues.  The festival will take place rain or shine and there is no admission fee.

Windsong Rehearsals

Windsong, Cleveland's Feminist Chorus, begins rehearsals for its 2013-14 season on Sunday, August 11. A non-audition chorus, Windsong welcomes any woman who wishes to sing. Rehearsals are held on Sundays starting at 1:45 pm at Lakewood Presbyterian Church, 14502 Detroit Ave., in Lakewood. Led Artistic DIrector Karen Weaver, Windsong performs a diverse secular repertoire including choral classics, Broadway, pop and swing tunes, and selections from world-wide folk traditions. Interested singers who want more information can visit the ensemble's website at  www.windsongchorus.org or call 216-644-8023.
