Inspired by the Jewish idea of the Lamed Vavniks, and in honor of TVT’s 36th year, we are recognizing 36 members of the TVT community whose generosity, spirit, and quiet acts of care help sustain our school.

For generations of TVT students and families, Rocky Brown’s music has helped our community celebrate, remember, and express our Jewish life together. In honoring Rocky, we also recognize the many teachers whose care, creativity, and dedication extend beyond their classrooms, shaping the traditions and shared experiences that connect students and families to TVT and to one another.

How did your TVT story begin?

I applied for a job when Tarbut was at the JCC and presented a model lesson for the second-grade class. The next weekend, I was conducting a children's choir performance at a Jewish community event when Bernice Tabak and Irving Gelman approached me to tell me that they wanted to hire me as their elementary school music teacher. When I started teaching music here, I only had 8 instruments. Irving taught me to submit a “Bid Proposal” to purchase more instruments. Avi Chelouche was our Judaic leader and he would guide the staff when we were down by reading Pirkei Avot to us and teaching us to remember to always be Mensches.  I am grateful to have the opportunity to teach music here at TVT. I have experienced many of the most powerful moments of my life here and the parents and staff have shown up in the most loving and supportive ways. TVT is like family to me.

What is one TVT moment, relationship, or experience that has stayed with you?

This is my 29th year here and I feel blessed to see and teach the children of former students that I have known and taught. Each time I see a former student bring their children to me, I thank G-d for my good fortune.

What is your hope for TVT's next 36 years?

I pray that TVT thrives and continues to educate our students and families for many generations to come. It is important to give back to our small community to ensure that we grow and thrive. I would love to see us not only keep up with the changing times, but help influence and create a better future for all.
