A message
from our Chairwoman of the Board
Greetings Chamber Members!
I hope you all have enjoyed your summer and the festivities around town. We have certainly had some excitement in our city. I got to ride in the Lancaster Chamber Fair Parade as the Chairwoman, and it was a lot of fun. Thank you, Anna and team, for making this all happen. You do an amazing job and we appreciate you! We also had a great luncheon with Kathy Strong talking about her new book "Secrets of Southern California". She was so amazing and if you missed her, I highly recommend you check out her book, it has some interesting secrets, even for the long-time residents of California. Thank you, Sandy and Destination Lancaster, for bringing her out to our Chamber luncheon.
We all must juggle at times and wear many hats throughout the year and finding time to do all of these activities can be challenging. I find myself picking and choosing which events I can and cannot attend. I wish I could be at all of them, I am truly in awe sometimes at the community in which we live. The Antelope Valley has somehow, in its growth, been able to maintain its small-town appeal. I am proud to be part of this community and organizations such as the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce for its part in the support of local businesses.
Thank you all for your continued support.
Katie Nelson
Chairwoman of the Board,
2019/20

Tips & Benefits from the
Lancaster Chamber of Commerce
CEO, Mark Hemstreet
Six Steps to take when receiving Feedback
After years in the lodging industry, something I learned quickly was how to take feedback and increase guest satisfaction. Sometimes your level of response is the determining factor in maintaining a returning patron. Feedback comes in all types: compliments, suggestions, friendly advice, perceptions, or complaints. You receive feedback in many forms; through your employees, face to face, emails, by phone, on social media and online reviews. Remember to take action and engage feedback. People like to know they are valued enough to see a response.
Here are a few tips:
- Make it safe for others to give you feedback. It should be easy to communicate with you; No long process that discourages interaction. If in person, pull them aside or out of the public view. It will help defuse the situation and gives them your full attention.
- Regarding online, emails, or messages: Respond in a timely manner. It's important to let them know that you value their opinion. Let them know you will keep your conversation confidential if the concern warrants. likewise, for compliments express to them you are happy to inform people of their experience.
- Listen, don't talk or interrupt them until they're finished. Let them get it all out. At some point they run out of steam. Just be patient and acknowledge their feedback. Try not to make excuses or be defensive. Respond with empathy. To them this is of ultimate importance.
- Thank them for their feedback and review their experience so you know you are both on the same page. If you are responding to negative feedback - apologize, to many people perception is reality. Treat it as such. As not all feedback is negative, make the same effort to appreciate positive input.
- Reflect before taking any action. If dealing with a complaint, stop for a moment and decide how you want to respond. My highest advice is to ask what you can do to make it right for them. You might be surprised it's not always about the money.
- Hold on to what's useful and toss the rest away. Realize you will need to take some feedback with a grain of salt and find the takeaways you can use to improve your service or product.
- Take action & grow- don't stop yet. You appropriately handled this situation but now review the circumstance and develop solutions to provide the best service or product for all your future customers! Remember the statistics: A dissatisfied customer tells between 9-15 people of their bad experience; A positive experience generates 4-6 accounts. After one negative experience, 51% will never do business with that company again. For every customer complaint there are 26 other unhappy customers who have remained silent.
