The business community now serves a greater Antelope Valley Region, with a population of more than 480,000 people.

A Message from our

It is hard to believe, but the holiday season is here. Although the Chamber is an advocate for local businesses year-round, this time of year it is even more important to encourage people to shop small and bring more holiday shopping to local businesses. For every $100 you spend at a locally owned business, $68 will stay in the community. When the same $100 is spent online or at a national chain, only $43 stays in the community. In addition, according to American Express' Shop Small Movement, small businesses donate approximately 250% more to non-profits/community causes than larger business. So let's work together this holiday season to support our local businesses as well as the local economy.
Also this holiday season, join us for the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce Christmas Parade happening on Saturday, December 1, 2018. This event is one of my family's personal favorites. For those interested in sponsoring this year's parade, there is still time. For additional details, contact the Chamber office at 661-948-4518.
As part of this month's Chamber member highlight, I would like to recognize Stan Ulvin. Stan is the owner of Sierra Towing. Stan, and the Ulvin family, have been involved in the community for decades. For the past five years, Stan has volunteered his time to serve as one of the instructors of the Young Entrepreneur's Academy (YEA). Most people do not realize that this is an eight-month commitment -- not just for the students but also our instructors. Stan has done an outstanding job educating young people on the ins and outs of starting and running a real-life business and I appreciate everything he has done for YEA.
Lastly, if you have not already, please don't forget to vote! With a number of important items on the ballot, every votes count. See you at the polls on Tuesday, November 6th!

Six Leadership Skills
HBR interviewed over 40 successful leaders of large corporations, startups, and non-profits to get their views about what it takes to become a leader.
Research pointed to six leadership skills where practice was particularly important. These are not mysterious and certainly aren't new. However, the leaders interviewed emphasized that these fundamental skills really matter. Aspiring leaders should focus on practicing these essential basics:
- Shape a vision that is exciting and challenging for your team (or division/unit/organization).
- Translate that vision into a clear strategy about what actions to take, and what not to take.
- Recruit, develop, and reward a team of great people to carry out the strategy.
- Focus on measurable results.
- Foster innovation and learning to sustain your team (or organization) and grow new leaders.
- Lead yourself - know yourself, improve yourself, and manage the appropriate balance in your own life.
No matter where you are in your career, you can find opportunities to practice these six skills. You'll have varying degrees of success, which is normal. But by reflecting on your successes and failures at every step, and getting feedback from colleagues and mentors, you'll keep making positive adjustments and find more opportunities to learn. Workers were able to improve their own performance by 20% after spending 15 minutes at the end of each day writing reflections on what they did well, what they did wrong, and their lessons learned.
Don't wait for learning opportunities to be handed to you. Seek them out and volunteer to take them on. And if you don't see the opportunities in your own organization, find them outside your professional work in a community group which are often hungry for leaders to step in and step up! Seek to work with a non-profit such as the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce!
Eventually, as you progress, you'll reach a level of capability in these areas such that you'll start seeing results: you'll successfully make things happen through the people who work for you. As you succeed, these results will begin to build upon one another. People will want to work with you. Clients or customers will ask for you by name. You'll be invited to represent the company at conferences. You'll have become a leader, capable of rallying an organization of people around a meaningful collective goal and delivering the results to reach it.
