This Month's Highlight

Doctors in India Survey

We are inviting all the Doctors to participate in a landmark national survey of doctors – Doctors in India -which is conducted by Harvard University and Swasth. The aim of the study is to understand doctors’ perceptions about their practices/jobs, their motivations, roles, and concerns; and explore their perceptions about health system reforms in India toward improving healthcare. The study is a part of the Lancet Citizens' Commission on Reimagining India's Health System (The Lancet Commission). If you participate, your responses will contribute to reform ideas for our country’s health system. The views and experiences of doctors such as yourself are vital to the recommendations for the future design of India’s health system. As an acknowledgment of your participation in this survey, we will offer you a Certificate of Appreciation from the Lancet Commission and invitations to meetings and events with policymakers and health system experts. In addition, and with your permission, we will acknowledge you on the Lancet Commission website.

India and its pluralistic health system – a new philosophy for Universal Health Coverage

In this article we attempt to put forth insights into using traditional medicine (TM) systems to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC). We discuss the need for reimagining India's health system and the importance of an inclusive approach for UHC. We comprehend the challenges with appropriate use of TM systems and the lessons from international experience of integrating TM systems. We highlight the pathways for better utilization of TM systems for UHC in India, write Sarika Chaturvedi, John Porter, Geetha Krishnan GopalakrishnaPillai, Leena Abraham, Darshan Shankar, Bhushan Patwardhan.

Pathways to reimagining commercial health insurance in India

In this paper we explore how India's growing commercial health insurance (CHI) segment can be reformed to deliver adequate financial protection and good health outcomes. We lay out key issues in the demand- and supply-sides of the insurance market that need to be addressed for CHI to be more aligned toward universal health coverage (UHC). On the demand side, we identify a consumer who strays far from the rational actor paradigm and therefore one whose needs require a fundamentally different approach than the one that commercial health insurance in India has so far taken, write Hasna Ashraf, Indradeep Ghosh Nishanth Kumar Anjali Nambiar Sowmini Prasad.

Views & Opinions

Evidence-based traditional medicine for transforming global health and well-being

For centuries, TM has been an integral resource for health in households and communities. The WHO recognizes the value and diversity of the cultures of Indigenous Peoples and local communities, along with their traditional knowledge. To attain the health-related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the WHO's Triple Billion Targets, which aim to ensure universal health coverage, protection from health emergencies, and improved well-being for over one billion people, concerted efforts are being made, write Bhushan Patwardhan, L. Susan Wieland, Obijiofor Aginam, Anchalee Chuthaputti, Ricardo Ghelman, Roshanak Ghods, Goh Cheng Soon, Motlalepula,G. Matsabisa, Georg Seifert, Sione Tu'itahi, KimSung Chol, Shyama Kuruvilla, Kathi Kemper, Holger Cramer, H.R. Nagendra, Anup Thakar, Tanuja Nesari, Sanjeev Sharma, Narayanam Srikanth, Rabinarayan Acharya.

How to Save Mothers

Perinatal depression during pregnancy or within the first year postpartum is one of the most common mental health disorders people experience. It is underdiagnosed in part because it can be masked by physiological changes associated with pregnancy, such as weight gain, fatigue, and sleep disturbances. Comprehensive data on its prevalence in India are not available, but a meta-analysis found that 22 percent of Indian women have postpartum depression, write Anoushka Arora, Vidhi Wadhwani, Siddhesh Zadey.

Resource

Organising for One Health in a developing country

The paper analyses the success and failures associated with the way in which India, Bangladesh, Kenya, and Rwanda have organised for One Health. It also studies the underlying pathways through which zoonotic spillovers take place, and epidemics gather momentum. Based on these critical analyses, the paper concludes that attempts to build single overarching units to address these challenges have only been partially effective. Given the scale and complexity of the challenge, it recommends that, even at the risk of duplication and the very real possibility that unaddressed gaps will remain, an approach, which builds multiple sharply focused units, would have a greater chance of success, writes Nachiket Mor.
