600 SQUARE MILES
Start with 383,934 acres of US farmland. Divide that total by the number of acres in a square mile — 640 — and it yields just shy of 600 square miles. According to the US Department of Agriculture, that’s the total amount of US farmland currently owned by Chinese investors today. That’s the cover story of our current issue.
This topic generates that rarest of responses in America today: bipartisan unity. According to the Washington Post, lawmakers in 31 states have introduced 81 bills to prohibit the Chinese government or businesses based in China from buying farmland or property near military bases.
I quote Senator Jon Tester of Montana, “Any company and any individual living in China that comes and tries to buy land can be controlled by the Chinese Communist Party because they have that kind of control over their people. In this particular case: guilty until proven innocent — let’s put it that way.”
