Into the Wild
One of the nation’s bellwether states has forged a remarkable partnership with private landowners. According to the US Census Bureau, Florida has long been a top gainer in population growth. Recent figures indicate that the state’s current population is almost 10 times the 1946 figure of 2,440,000.
But those millions of newcomers and their homes and condos have imperiled the Sunshine State’s all-important agricultural sector. Wildlife habitat has been fragmented. And when Mother Nature storms ashore during hurricane season, wildlands are far more resilient.
This Labor Day weekend, I encourage you to take a look at Cary Estes’s incisive report on the Florida Wildlife Corridor, an innovative mosaic of connected land and water being created by Floridians such as Mallory Dimmitt, CEO of the Florida Wildlife Corridor Foundation (right).
