COMPARE AND CONTRAST

I’m always intrigued when industry experts from across the country describe the challenges they face in specific markets. In a surprising number of cases, they are actually describing different sides of the same coin. That’s definitely not the case when it comes to conservation options and opportunities.

Our Conservation Issue highlights these differences by offering a deep dive on three contrasting markets: Colorado, Florida, and Texas. In Colorado, Ken Mirr describes the number of conservation options as “the lap of luxury.” In Florida, Dean Saunders literally wrote the legislation that authorized the State of Florida to purchase development rights. In Texas, James King describes each conservation opportunity as “hand-to-hand combat,” an opportunity he relishes.

Although their settings and their stories vary considerably, a passion to protect private lands unites all three.
