The 495 Express Lanes Extension is Now Open!

The 2.5-mile northern extension of the 495 Express Lanes and new access ramps at the Dulles Toll Road and George Washington Memorial Parkway are now available for Beltway travelers in the McLean-Tysons area.

As traffic becomes acclimated to the new lanes and ramps, drivers should use caution when traveling on the new express lanes extension and within the surrounding area.

Visit ExpressLanes.com/495Extension for more details about the new connections and how to use them.

495 NEXT project construction will continue into 2026 as crews work on finishing additional upgrades and project elements throughout the corridor. Lane closures during non-peak travel times will continue to be necessary through mid-2026 for crews to safely complete these important final project elements, which will benefit surrounding communities and local travelers.

Traffic Changes

Northbound I-495 Exit Ramp to Westbound Dulles Toll Road

Reminder: The ramp from northbound I-495 to westbound Dulles Toll Road (DTR) (Exit 45) reopened at its permanent location, which is about one-third of a mile north of the existing temporary exit that has been in use since project construction began.

Northbound and Southbound I-495 Traffic Shifted to New Beltway Alignment

Reminder: Traffic on all four general-purpose lanes of northbound I-495 (Capital Beltway Inner Loop) was shifted onto newly constructed outer lanes between just south of Old Dominion Drive and the George Washington Memorial Parkway. Traffic on all four general-purpose lanes of southbound I-495 (Capital Beltway Outer Loop) between just north of George Washington Memorial Parkway to just south of Georgetown Pike was shifted onto newly constructed outer lanes. These shifts enable crews to begin construction of the new express lanes in the center of the Beltway.

Following the first southbound I-495 traffic shift, drivers must now use two separate exits from southbound I-495 to access Exit 43 for GWMP and Exit 44 for Georgetown Pike. Instead of using the collector-distributor road that began just south of the American Legion Bridge, motorists now have two unique exit points directly from southbound I-495 for GWMP and Georgetown Pike.

Lanes on southbound I-495 between just south of Georgetown Pike to north of the Dulles Corridor Interchange near Old Dominion Drive are planned to shift in mid-July.

Click here for more information about these traffic shifts.

New Ramp Alignment for Traffic Exiting George Washington Memorial Parkway to Southbound I-495 and Georgetown Pike (Exit 44) and Southbound I-495 Traffic Exiting at Georgetown Pike (Exit 44)

Reminder: Traffic was shifted to a new ramp alignment located on the outer edge of the Beltway that runs parallel to southbound I-495 (Capital Beltway Outer Loop) between George Washington Memorial Parkway (GWMP) and Georgetown Pike. Drivers exiting northwest GWMP to southbound I-495 now stay in the right lane of the ramp and merge onto I-495 just south of the Georgetown Pike Bridge and motorists heading to Georgetown Pike (Exit 44) now remain in the left lanes of the ramp to reach the exit. Southbound I-495 Exit 44 collector road traffic now enters the new ramp alignment just after Exit 43 for GWMP and exit left to access Georgetown Pike (Exit 44).

Drivers should pay close attention to signage and lane markings, and use caution while getting acclimated to these new traffic patterns.

Click here to read more about the ramp shift.

Westbound George Washington Memorial Parkway to Southbound I-495

Reminder: The ramp from westbound George Washington Memorial Parkway to southbound I-495 (Capital Beltway) was reduced from two lanes to one lane to make room for a construction vehicle haul route that will be separated from traffic by a physical barrier. This traffic change will be in effect throughout construction on the 495 NEXT project.

Project Background

The I-495 Express Lanes Northern Extension (495 NEXT) project will extend the existing 495 Express Lanes north by two-and-a-half miles from the Dulles Corridor interchange to the George Washington Memorial Parkway interchange in the vicinity of the American Legion Bridge. The project will provide new and improved connections at the Dulles Corridor and George Washington Memorial Parkway.

Other project benefits include four miles of new bicycle and pedestrian connections including a shared-use path parallel to I-495 from Lewinsville Road to near Live Oak Drive, replacement or rehabilitation of seven bridges with pedestrian accommodations, replacement of nine existing noise walls and construction of a new noise wall, environmental improvements introducing stormwater management facilities and funding of restoration at Scott's Run stream, and dedicated funding to support transit improvements in the corridor including new bus service over the American Legion Bridge.

495 NEXT is a public-private partnership project between the Commonwealth of Virginia and Transurban, operator of the existing 495 Express Lanes. Lane Construction is the design-build contractor for the project. The new extended lanes are scheduled to open in 2025.
