Lane Closures and Traffic Changes

The following construction-related lane closures and traffic changes are planned to occur in the I-495 Express Lanes Northern Extension (495 NEXT) project corridor. Travelers should expect potential delays when traveling in this area and should visit 511virginia.org for real-time information on work zones and lane closures. All work is subject to change based on weather and other factors.

Single right lane closure on northbound I-495 between Lewinsville Road and George Washington Memorial Parkway for drainage, excavation, sound wall and embankment work.


Monday, February 19, 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Single right lane closure on northbound I-495 between Lewinsville Road and Live Oak Drive for hauling materials.


Monday, February 19, through Friday, February 23, 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Alternating single mobile lane closure on northbound I-495 throughout the project corridor as needed for maintenance work and traffic management.


Tuesday, February 20, through Saturday, February 24, 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Triple right lane closures on northbound I-495 from Dulles Toll Road to George Washington Memorial Parkway for pile driving and soil boring. Each night of the closure, a single lane closure will begin at 9:30 p.m., followed by a double lane closure at 10 p.m. and a triple lane closure at 11 p.m. Note: This work will take place upon completion of the I-495 South triple right lane closures and will not be concurrent.


Friday, February 23, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Alternating single mobile lane closure on northbound I-495 throughout the project corridor as needed for maintenance work and traffic management.

Monday, February 19, through Thursday, February 22, 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Single right lane closure on southbound I-495 between Live Oak Drive and Dulles Toll Road for drainage, sound wall, embankment and excavation work.


Monday, February 19, through Wednesday, February 21, 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Triple right lane closures on southbound I-495 from Georgetown Pike to Dulles Toll Road for pile driving and soil boring. Each night of the closure, a single lane closure will begin at 9:30 p.m., followed by a double lane closure at 10 p.m. and a triple lane closure at 11 p.m. Note: This work will be completed before the I-495 North triple right lane closures and will not be concurrent.

GEORGE WASHINGTON MEMORIAL PARKWAY INTERCHANGE


Monday, February 19, and Tuesday, February 20, 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

The on-ramp from George Washington Memorial Parkway to southbound I-495 will be closed for drainage work. Motorists should follow the signed detour, which crosses the American Legion Bridge into Maryland. In the event of inclement weather or other unforeseen delays, this closure will be rescheduled for the nights of Wednesday, Feb. 21, and Thursday, Feb. 22. Learn more about the work and detour here.

LIVE OAK DRIVE


Monday, February 19, through Friday, February 23, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Live Oak Drive will be reduced to a single lane near the swim club and bridge for waterline work. Flagging operations alternating single traffic lanes will be in effect.

GEORGETOWN PIKE


Monday, February 19, through Friday, February 23, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Single right lane closure on westbound Georgetown Pike at the bridge over I-495 for backfill work.

DULLES CORRIDOR INTERCHANGE 


Dulles Toll Road


Monday, February 19, through Thursday, February 22, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Single right lane closure on westbound Dulles Toll Road (267 Connector) from Route 123 to the I-495 interchange for trenching and conduit work.

Traffic Changes

New Exit Ramp for I-495 North Exit to Dulles Toll Road


Reminder: Motorists traveling on northbound I-495 heading for westbound Dulles Toll Road must take a new, earlier exit. The new exit ramp is located about one-third of a mile ahead of the old, closed Exit 45. To facilitate this new traffic pattern, I-495 has been reduced from four to three lanes for approximately one-half mile near the Dulles Corridor interchange.

George Washington Memorial Parkway West at I-495


Reminder: The ramp from westbound George Washington Memorial Parkway to southbound I-495 (Capital Beltway) was reduced from two lanes to one lane to make room for a construction vehicle haul route that will be separated from traffic by a physical barrier. This traffic change will be in effect throughout construction on the 495 NEXT project.

Project Background

The I-495 Express Lanes Northern Extension (495 NEXT) project will extend the existing 495 Express Lanes north by two-and-a-half miles from the Dulles Corridor interchange to the George Washington Memorial Parkway interchange in the vicinity of the American Legion Bridge. The project will provide new and improved connections at the Dulles Corridor and George Washington Memorial Parkway.


Other project benefits include four miles of new bicycle and pedestrian connections including a shared-use path parallel to I-495 from Lewinsville Road to near Live Oak Drive, replacement or rehabilitation of seven bridges with pedestrian accommodations, replacement of nine existing noise walls and construction of a new noise wall, environmental improvements introducing stormwater management facilities and funding of restoration at Scott's Run stream, and dedicated funding to support transit improvements in the corridor including new bus service over the American Legion Bridge. 

 

495 NEXT is a public-private partnership project between the Commonwealth of Virginia and Transurban, operator of the existing 495 Express Lanes. Lane Construction is the design-build contractor for the project. The new extended lanes are scheduled to open in 2025.
