Lane Closures and Traffic Changes

For February 6 - February 11, 2023

The following construction-related lane closures and traffic changes are planned to occur in the I-495 Express Lanes Northern Extension (495 NEXT) project corridor. Travelers should expect potential delays when traveling in this area, and are encouraged to visit 511virginia.org for current information on travel conditions and work zones in Virginia. All construction-related work and closures are subject to change based on weather and other factors.

Monday, February 6, through Thursday, February 9, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Single left lane closures on north- and southbound I-495 between Old Dominion Drive and Live Oak Drive for bridge work.

Monday, February 6, through Thursday, February 9, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Single, alternating lane closures on all four ramps at the Georgetown Pike interchange to support clearing operations, bridge work, and jack and bore work at the interchange. This includes the on-ramps from Georgetown Pike to I-495 North and South, and the off-ramps from I-495 North and South to Georgetown Pike.

Monday, February 6, through Friday, February 10, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Mobile single lane closures on north- and southbound I-495 between Route 123 and the George Washington Memorial Parkway for traffic maintenance, including lane striping.

Monday, February 6, through Friday, February 10, 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Double right lane closures on northbound I-495 from Dulles Toll Road to George Washington Memorial Parkway for barrier and attenuator placement. Note: This work may extend to Saturday night if there are weather delays during the week.

Monday, February 6, through Friday, February 10, 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Double right lane closures on southbound I-495 from George Washington Memorial Parkway to Old Dominion Drive for barrier placement, and at Scott’s Run bridge for noise barrier post removal to support bridge work and clearing access at Scott’s Run. Note: This work may extend to Saturday night if there are weather delays during the week.

Single and/or double mobile lane closures on north- and southbound I-495 between the Dulles Toll Road and George Washington Memorial Parkway for traffic maintenance and pothole repair work.

Monday, February 6, through Thursday, February 9, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Single left lane closures on the westbound Dulles Toll Road connector between Route 123 and the I-495 interchange for bridge work.

Monday, February 6, through Thursday, February 9, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Single left lane closures on eastbound Dulles Toll Road at the I-495 interchange for bridge work.

Monday, February 6, through Friday, February 9, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The on-ramp from eastbound Dulles Toll Road to northbound I-495 will be narrowed (no lane closure) for bridge work.

Monday, February 6, through Friday, February 10, 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Alternating single left and right lane closures on westbound Dulles Toll Road from Route 123 to the west of the I-495 overpass to shift traffic for painting/eradicating work.

Dulles Access Road

Single right lane closures on eastbound Dulles Access Road at the I-495 interchange for bridge work.

Traffic Changes

I-495 North Exit to Dulles Toll Road

Reminder: Motorists traveling on northbound I-495 heading for westbound Dulles Toll Road must take a new, earlier exit. The new exit ramp is located about one-third of a mile ahead of the old, closed Exit 45. To facilitate this new traffic pattern, I-495 has been reduced from four to three lanes for approximately one-half mile near the Dulles Corridor interchange. George Washington Memorial Parkway West at I-495

Reminder: The ramp from westbound George Washington Memorial Parkway to southbound I-495 (Capital Beltway) was reduced from two lanes to one lane to make room for a construction vehicle haul route that will be separated from traffic by a physical barrier. This traffic change will be in effect throughout construction on the 495 NEXT project. Learn more about the traffic change here.

Project Background

The I-495 Express Lanes Northern Extension (495 NEXT) project will extend the existing 495 Express Lanes north by two-and-a-half miles from the Dulles Corridor interchange to the George Washington Memorial Parkway interchange in the vicinity of the American Legion Bridge. The project will provide new and improved connections at the Dulles Corridor and George Washington Memorial Parkway.

Other project benefits include four miles of new bicycle and pedestrian connections including a shared-use path parallel to I-495 from Lewinsville Road to near Live Oak Drive, replacement or rehabilitation of seven bridges with pedestrian accommodations, replacement of nine existing noise walls and construction of a new noise wall, environmental improvements introducing stormwater management facilities and funding of restoration at Scotts Run stream, and dedicated funding to support transit improvements in the corridor including new bus service over the American Legion Bridge.

495 NEXT is a public-private partnership project between the Commonwealth of Virginia and Transurban, operator of the existing 495 Express Lanes. Lane Construction is the design-build contractor for the project. The new extended lanes are scheduled to open in 2025.
