The following construction-related lane closures and traffic changes are planned in the I-495 Express Lanes Northern Extension (495 NEXT) project corridor. Travelers may encounter delays in this area. All work is subject to change based on weather and other factors.

Northbound I-495 Traffic Shift to New Beltway Alignment

On Friday night, May 9, into Saturday morning, May 10, crews are scheduled to shift traffic on all four general-purpose lanes of northbound I-495 (Capital Beltway Inner Loop) from just south of Old Dominion Drive to the George Washington Memorial Parkway onto new lanes built on the outer side of the highway. Saturday night, May 10 will serve as a backup date in case of inclement weather or other work delays

One lane will remain open to traffic, except when intermittent total traffic stoppages and/or slow-roll traffic operations occur between midnight and 5 a.m. Police will be on hand to assist with directing motorists.

New Ramp Alignment for Traffic Exiting George Washington Memorial Parkway to Southbound I-495 and Georgetown Pike (Exit 44) and Southbound I-495 Traffic Exiting at Georgetown Pike (Exit 44)

The new ramp alignment is located on the outer edge of the Beltway and runs parallel to southbound I-495 between George Washington Memorial Parkway (GWMP) and Georgetown Pike. Drivers exiting northwest GWMP to southbound I-495 (Capital Beltway Outer Loop) now must stay in the right lane of the ramp and merge onto I-495 just south of the Georgetown Pike Bridge and motorists heading to Georgetown Pike (Exit 44) now remain in the left lanes of the ramp to reach the exit. Southbound I-495 Exit 44 collector road traffic now enters the new ramp alignment just after Exit 43 for GWMP, and will exit left to access Georgetown Pike (Exit 44).

Drivers should pay close attention to signage and lane markings, and use caution while getting acclimated to these new traffic patterns.

New Exit Ramp for I-495 North Exit to Dulles Toll Road

Reminder: Motorists traveling on northbound I-495 heading for westbound Dulles Toll Road must take a new, earlier exit. The new exit ramp is located about one-third of a mile ahead of the old, closed Exit 45. To facilitate this new traffic pattern, I-495 has been reduced from four to three lanes for approximately one-half mile near the Dulles Corridor interchange.

George Washington Memorial Parkway West at I-495

Reminder: The ramp from westbound George Washington Memorial Parkway to southbound I-495 (Capital Beltway) was reduced from two lanes to one lane to make room for a construction vehicle haul route that will be separated from traffic by a physical barrier. This traffic change will be in effect throughout construction on the 495 NEXT project.

Project Background

The I-495 Express Lanes Northern Extension (495 NEXT) project will extend the existing 495 Express Lanes north by two-and-a-half miles from the Dulles Corridor interchange to the George Washington Memorial Parkway interchange in the vicinity of the American Legion Bridge. The project will provide new and improved connections at the Dulles Corridor and George Washington Memorial Parkway.

Other project benefits include four miles of new bicycle and pedestrian connections including a shared-use path parallel to I-495 from Lewinsville Road to near Live Oak Drive, replacement or rehabilitation of seven bridges with pedestrian accommodations, replacement of nine existing noise walls and construction of a new noise wall, environmental improvements introducing stormwater management facilities and funding of restoration at Scott's Run stream, and dedicated funding to support transit improvements in the corridor including new bus service over the American Legion Bridge.

495 NEXT is a public-private partnership project between the Commonwealth of Virginia and Transurban, operator of the existing 495 Express Lanes. Lane Construction is the design-build contractor for the project. The new extended lanes are scheduled to open in 2025.
