Lane Closures and Traffic Changes

July 31- August 4, 2023

The following construction-related lane closures and traffic changes are planned to occur in the I-495 Express Lanes Northern Extension (495 NEXT) project corridor. Travelers should expect potential delays when traveling in this area, and are encouraged to visit 511virginia.org for current information on travel conditions and work zones in Virginia. All construction-related work and closures are subject to change based on weather and other factors.

Upcoming Highlights

Daytime single and nighttime multi-lane closures on I-495 North and South.
Daytime and nighttime single lane closures on the westbound Dulles Toll Road.
Daytime flagging operations on Balls Hill Road at Live Oak Drive.
The ramp from southbound I-495 to eastbound George Washington Memorial Parkway (exit 43) will be closed and a detour will be in place on Wednesday, August 2 through Thursday, august 3, 11 p.m. to 4 a.m.

Monday, July 31, through Thursday, August 3, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Single right lane closure on northbound I-495 between Lewinsville Road and the George Washington Memorial Parkway for pipework, bridge work and excavation.

Monday, July 31, 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Single mobile lane closures on northbound I-495 at the Georgetown Pike interchange for traffic maintenance.

Monday, July 31, through Friday, August 4, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Single mobile lane closures on northbound I-495 throughout the project corridor for traffic maintenance and pothole repairs.

I-495 South

Monday, July 31, through Thursday, August 3, 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Single right lane closures on southbound I-495 between Georgetown Pike and Dulles Toll Road for bridge work.

Monday, July 31, through Friday, August 4, 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Mobile lane closures on southbound I-495 throughout the project corridor for traffic maintenance and pothole repairs.

Monday, July 31, 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Single mobile lane closures on southbound I-495 at the Georgetown Pike interchange for traffic maintenance.

LIVE OAK DRIVE

Monday, July 31, through Friday, August 4, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Live Oak Drive will be reduced to a single lane to accommodate utility work. Flagging operations alternating single traffic lanes will be in effect.

GEORGE WASHINGTON MEMORIAL PARKWAY INTERCHANGE

Wednesday, August 2, through Thursday, August 3, 11 p.m. to 4 a.m.

The ramp from southbound I-495 to the eastbound George Washington Memorial Parkway will be closed nightly for ramp alignment and clearing work. Motorists should follow the posted detour. In the event of inclement weather, this work will be moved to Friday, August 4. Learn more about the detour here.

BALLS HILL ROAD

Monday, July 31, through Thursday, August 3, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Friday, August 4, 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Balls Hill Road will be reduced to a single lane at the Live Oak Drive intersection to accommodate water line installation. Flagging operations alternating single traffic lanes will be in effect.

DULLES CORRIDOR INTERCHANGE

Dulles Toll Road

Monday, July 31, through Thursday, August 3, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Single left lane closure on westbound Dulles Toll Road (267 Connector) between Route 123 and the I-495 interchange for bridge work, pipe work and embankment work.

Traffic Changes

New Exit Ramp for I-495 North Exit to Dulles Toll Road

Reminder: Motorists traveling on northbound I-495 heading for westbound Dulles Toll Road must take a new, earlier exit. The new exit ramp is located about one-third of a mile ahead of the old, closed Exit 45. To facilitate this new traffic pattern, I-495 has been reduced from four to three lanes for approximately one-half mile near the Dulles Corridor interchange. George Washington Memorial Parkway West at I-495

Reminder: The ramp from westbound George Washington Memorial Parkway to southbound I-495 (Capital Beltway) was reduced from two lanes to one lane to make room for a construction vehicle haul route that will be separated from traffic by a physical barrier. This traffic change will be in effect throughout construction on the 495 NEXT project. Learn more about the traffic change here.

Project Background

The I-495 Express Lanes Northern Extension (495 NEXT) project will extend the existing 495 Express Lanes north by two-and-a-half miles from the Dulles Corridor interchange to the George Washington Memorial Parkway interchange in the vicinity of the American Legion Bridge. The project will provide new and improved connections at the Dulles Corridor and George Washington Memorial Parkway.

Other project benefits include four miles of new bicycle and pedestrian connections including a shared-use path parallel to I-495 from Lewinsville Road to near Live Oak Drive, replacement or rehabilitation of seven bridges with pedestrian accommodations, replacement of nine existing noise walls and construction of a new noise wall, environmental improvements introducing stormwater management facilities and funding of restoration at Scotts Run stream, and dedicated funding to support transit improvements in the corridor including new bus service over the American Legion Bridge.

495 NEXT is a public-private partnership project between the Commonwealth of Virginia and Transurban, operator of the existing 495 Express Lanes. Lane Construction is the design-build contractor for the project. The new extended lanes are scheduled to open in 2025.
