President's Message

Greetings,

In Louisiana v. Callais (2026), the Supreme Court has once again taken up the scope of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. For over a decade Section 2 has been one of the last meaningful enforcement tools left after Shelby County v. Holder (2013) stripped away federal preclearance. Section 2 made it much easier to challenge the effects of discriminatory voting laws and maps in court by not requiring a showing of discriminatory intent. The Court’s ruling means discriminatory voting laws are more likely to go into effect and stay in place unless and until they are successfully challenged after the fact. We are already seeing the consequences. States are aggressively moving forward with redistricting changes and voting laws that would have required far greater federal scrutiny in the past. This decision is, without question, one of the most consequential Supreme Court decisions since the Voting Rights Act was enacted in 1965. This moment is a call to action for organizations and individuals who are committed to protecting voting rights. The John M. Langston Bar Association has made its commitment to civil rights clear. Please join the fight to preserve the promise of our democracy.
