MSUFCU’s Affinity Groups Strengthen Communities and Fosters Talent
MSUFCU’s CU Parent Support Affinity Group volunteers at a local non-profit, Give-A-Kid Projects, assisting the organization with folding and sorting winter gear in preparation for their winter clothing drive.
In an ever-evolving landscape of financial services, MSU Federal Credit Union (MSUFCU) is tapping into the power of Affinity Groups (AGs), also known as Employee Resource Groups (ERGs), to not only enhance their community impact but also nurture their talent pipelines.

MSUFCU’s AGs each play a crucial role as subject matter experts, offering a unique perspective into the needs of employees and members. They bridge the gap between the organization and the diverse communities they serve, ensuring the Credit Union’s product and services are accessible and relevant to their member’s financial goals.
In 2023, MSUFCU’s AGs demonstrated their commitment to making a positive impact in the communities they live, work, and serve. Thus far, AGs have donated nearly $6,000 to local charitable organizations, hosted 15 guest speakers, and organized numerous events, focused on volunteerism, networking, and community building, exemplifying MSUFCU’s commitment to strengthening the bonds within its communities. This level of community engagement is a testament to the mission of credit unions, “people helping people.”
Furthermore, AGs are more than just community advocates. They serve as catalysts for professional development within MSUFCU. Employees who serve as leaders to these groups gain new skills and experiences that may not be available in their current roles. This holistic development not only enhances their personal growth but also brings a diverse skillset to the Credit Union, making MSUFCU versatile and adaptable.

The call to action is clear - Credit Unions, and businesses in general, should actively support and invest in Affinity Groups. By doing so, they can strengthen their ties with the community, develop diverse, skilled leaders, and ultimately make a positive, lasting impact. It's not just good for business; it's good for everyone involved.

They gathered Latino businesses from around Michigan with the goal of promoting relationships with each other. This successful day of Hispanic culture was sponsored by the Cafecito Caliente Group, led by Executive Director Sien Paul Benavides. Read more on Page 10 of FCOUS Magazine.
MSU Students Partner with the Smithsonian and MSU Museum for Impactful Collaborations
In a creative collaboration, a multidisciplinary team of Michigan State University (MSU) students have worked with the Smithsonian to test a new approach to accessible design using a Smithsonian exhibition, “Knowing Nature: Stories of the Boreal Forest,” currently on view at the MSU Museum. Through innovative technology and educational initiatives, the students are paving the way for enhanced accessibility and engagement for visitors nationwide. A key component of this partnership is the development of a cutting-edge digital concierge service that leverages radio-frequency identification technology. This digital concierge service empowers visitors with visual impairment to self-identify their preferences for accessible options within the exhibition.
