LHA members participate as panel experts at Housing CA Conference in Sacramento
LHA and its members, partners, and affiliates continue to advocate for our cause and participate as experts on the topic of housing for people with developmental disabilities. This year at Housing California's annual conference, representatives from Housing Consortium of the East Bay (Member), Brilliant Corners (Member), and Chelsea Investment Corporation(Partner) sat on panels coordinated by ARCA and DDS. Thank you for spreading the LHA message and raising awareness of the need for increased affordable housing to service people with I/DD.

LHA Spring Summit tackles critical operational issues
LHA's
2019 Spring Summit
was held in San Diego on March 14 & 15 and was coordinated as an internal Members, Partners, and Affiliates meeting to tackle topics related to our operations. Sessions at this two-day event included discussions on LHA's primary function, committee reports and objectives, membership recruitment, core messaging, and operations & finance. We appreciated having many of our new members, partners, and affiliates in attendance. A big thank you to Carlos Flores, Executive Director of the San Diego Regional Center, the recipient of our Annual Housing Hero Award.
We will welcome back all community stakeholders to LHA's
2019 Fall Housing Thought Leaders Summit
taking place in Sacramento on September 26 & 27.

Why the housing crisis hits this Bay Area group especially hard
A new housing complex that just broke ground in Pleasanton is trying to change that, becoming one of just a handful of local projects designed to house low-income adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder, cerebral palsy, epilepsy and other developmental disabilities.
Experts say Sunflower Hill at Irby Ranch takes a tiny step toward addressing a massive — and growing — Bay Area need. Residents with developmental disabilities often can’t work and receive just a few hundred dollars a month in government benefits, not nearly enough to afford an apartment in the region’s overheated housing market. Complicating their housing search, they also may need help with everyday tasks such as laundry and grocery shopping.

Rockville parents build a rental complex for their son to share with other adults with disabilities — and also be part of the community
|
Twelve years ago, after struggling to find a local school that was a good fit for their young son who had epilepsy and other developmental disabilities, Jillian Copeland and her husband, Scott, started one. That school, the Diener School, continues today in Potomac, Md., serving children with special needs.
But as the Copelands’ son Nicol, now 19, prepared to enter adulthood, they found that, again, there was no living situation appropriate for his needs.
And so, again, they started one.
