It’s the time of year when we ask the question, did he see his shadow or not? Is spring coming sooner rather than later? While this isn’t the most accurate forecast, it does remind us that while we are in the middle of winter, spring is just around the corner. This winter has been a bit kinder than last winter, for which I am appreciative.
Report cards will be coming home in February. Report cards are one form of communication from the teacher to you. If you find that you have questions about something on the report card, I would encourage you to contact your child’s teacher. This includes questions for specialists.
Our Read Your Heart Out event is scheduled for February 14. I am so excited for this event, which also celebrates Black History month. A shout out to Mrs. Schuster for coordinating this event.
February is Black History Month and we will be starting the month out with our Black History Week of Action. Students will be learning about the gifts that many African Americans have given to this country, as well as having discussions about race, diversity, and collective value.
We will be conducting our all school Lock Down drill on February 20. More detailed information will follow as we get closer to this date.
As we move into the second semester, we are beginning to start our 2020-2021 School Improvement planning. We will be reaching out to stakeholders in many ways, including surveys and parent interviews. I will be showcasing the new format of our School Improvement Plan at the February PTG meeting.
I want to wish everyone a positive start to the second semester. It’s hard to believe that the school year is at the halfway point. We continue to set goals, work hard, grow, and make progress.
Have a great February!!

Help your child learn to persevere. Today, they may learn to overcome a snowdrift to get to school. In the future, your child will have the grit to triumph over even greater obstacles to their dreams.

During the month of February, twenty-five MMSD schools will participate in
Read Your Heart Out Day.
This day is to honor National African American Parent Involvement Day. The purpose of this event in Madison is to support family involvement, literacy and cultural relevance.
Teachers, students, community members, and parents will come together to recognize the importance of celebrating African American culture and literacy with guest classroom readers! Lapham will participate in Read Your Heart Out Day on February 14.

Once again, we will kick off Black History Month with Black Lives Week of Action on February 3rd.
You will see staff wearing Black Lives Matter t-shirts throughout the
week. Classrooms will be learning about structural racism,
intersectional identities, Black history, and anti-racist movements.
Classroom activities include Read Alouds, discussion circles, and art activities. Our African American students will be highlighted in our morning announcements throughout the month. Please ask your children about what they have
learned. It takes all of us to create an anti-racist community that
values and elevates our black and brown students.

From the Music room
Hello, Families!
It has been a busy and wonderful time in Music these past weeks as we've prepared for Fine Arts Night and celebrated our work as musicians. Lapham students are amazing! Their school day rehearsals and their evening performance were all beautiful, powerful, and so very special. Many people commented on how confident and heartfelt their singing was, as well as how wonderful it is to be in the presence of inspiring youth. What a joy to work with your amazing children!
As we move into February, we will focus on celebrating and uplifting Black musicians. We'll be busy singing African-American spirituals, celebrating our Musicians of the Month,
SistaStrings
(who are from Milwaukee!), and learning about the importance of anthems or theme-songs to movements for justice. Students will be drumming and learning mallet percussion, like xylophones.
We continue to have an awesome partnership with Madison Symphony Orchestra and are looking forward to hosting the Hunt Quartet again in March and April. Looking ahead to spring, we're also excited to be planning some music activities in the Lapham Garden. More fun is in store!
All the best to our Lapham families!
Mrs. Kazda

Lapham-Marquette Parent Teacher Group (PTG)
The PTG has some some fun events coming up!
Family Science Night
is scheduled for Wednesday February 12th 6-7:30pm at the Marquette Field House. This hands-on, fun event will feature demonstrations from UW scientists, neighbors and friends; activity booths and games. Fun for the whole family. Questions? Contact Erica at

The
PTG Spring Auction
will be held Saturday April 18 from 6-9pm at Old Sugar Distillery. This is the PTG’s largest fundraiser and all of the money raised goes directly back to our school community providing teacher support and student enrichment programs. We need your help to make it a success! There is much to do, event promotion, donation gathering, data entry, or help setting up and running the event. We are also seeking donations for the silent auction. Consider donating your time or talents! Email Abbey at

with questions or for more information.
Planning is also underway for the International Food Fair and the Spring Talent Show. More to come!
Join us for the next PTG meeting on Tuesday February 11th in the Lapham Auditorium. Pizza and childcare will be provided.

COLDER WEATHER
As we begin to transition to colder weather, there are a few reminders we want to be sure everyoneis aware of:
- All students will be outside for recess during the day if the temperature is within district guidelines. When temperatures reach below zero is when we have indoor recess
- Doors to enter school in the morning will open at 7:35 a.m.
- Please make sure that your child has warm clothing and if you need assistance with that, let us know so we can help
