Parents, thank you for assisting us in keeping the building safe by reporting to the office and signing in if you are visiting your child’s classroom.
Happy October!! We have had a terrific start to the school year. Students have been busy learning behavioral expectations and routines, as well as getting to know the teachers and adults around the school. The beginning of the school year is so important in establishing the culture and climate of classrooms, as well as the school. We want to start the school year on a positive note!
Along with October comes weather that switches from cool to warm throughout the day. Please make sure your child comes dressed for the weather. Layers are always a good idea. It is also a good idea to label jackets. Very often students remove their jackets at recess because they are warm and then run in for lunch without it.
I would like to give a big shout out to the Tenney Lapham Neighborhood Association for their generous donation to our Lapham-Marquette PTG. This money will be used to assist families that may need a bit extra. Thank you!!!
Our Back to School Night was a huge success. Students had the opportunity to show parents their classrooms, as well as other parts of the school. PTG did a fabulous job of greeting families as they entered the building. We appreciate the PTG and their support.
Thank you all for a great start to the school year. Don’t hesitate to reach out to me at any time with questions or concerns. Enjoy all that October and early fall bring.

Please welcome Mrs. Miran as our new Art teacher. Mrs. Miran was the long term sub last year for Ms. Claire, she started the year as a substitute and is now a permanent part of our team. We are very excited to have Mrs. Miran here at Lapham!
Good attendance contributes to students doing well in school and eventually in the workplace. By middle and high school, attendance is even more predictive of successful graduation. Each absence represents a preventable lost opportunity to learn in the classroom. MMSD Attendance Website #attendance matters

We have a couple upcoming volunteer opportunities/projects. If you are interested please email Cara at [email protected] and fill out the volunteer form here

Hello! My name is Jean Lange. I am your child’s PE teacher. I have been teaching PE at Lapham for 20+ years. I enjoy working with early elementary children because of their enthusiasm for moving. Lapham is a special place and I feel fortunate to be part of such a wonderful community. When I’m not at school you will usually find me with my family. My husband,Tracey, and I have three kids. Maddie is a UW student, Ian is a senior, and Colin is a sophomore in high school. I enjoy activities like working out, hiking, biking, kayaking, or walking our dog. I also enjoy reading, coffee, and I have a giant sweet tooth.
You may have heard we started the school year with an amazing set of gymnastics and climbing equipment that travels around to all the elementary schools in the district. Climbing and gymnastics are great for building core strength. The gymnastic skills we worked on were front supports on a training bar, jumping and landing, rolls, tripods, traveling across balance beams, and vaulting. We have been working on moving safely and learning what it means to have enough space around us as we move so we don’t bump/crash/push into others.
In October we will learn more about safe moving on the playground and work with playground balls, hula hoops, bean bags, deck rings, and jump ropes. We will practice hopping, jumping, galloping, and skipping. We will also review/learn some simple running games and discuss what it means to play fair. Moving safely and playing fair are themes that will carry over into all PE activities.
I came across this post by another PE teacher and thought it was perfect.
Things I care about more than your child’s “skills” in PE.
  1. Your child feeling safe, valued, and respected in my class.
  2. Your child building healthy relationships with others.
  3. Your child having FUN, regardless of how modified their activities are.
  4. Your child. Period.
If you have any questions or concerns the best way to reach me is to send me an email, [email protected]
I’m looking forward to a fun year with your children,
Jean

Lapham-Marquette Parent Teacher Group (PTG)
The 2019-2020 school year is off to a great start! The PTG has been busy with several big initiatives and events. Thanks to all who visited the PTG table during the ice cream social and back to school night. Whether or not you can commit to an official position, we want to hear your thoughts and ideas. The PTG is all of us! Stay connected by following us on Facebook , Instagram , joining our mailing list or by visiting our website

One of our goals this year to increase engagement, communication and collaboration between all members of the PTG. If you haven’t done so, please take a minute to fill out this brief survey . We really appreciate your input about how the PTG can better serve you and the Lapham-Marquette Community.

The PTG board would like to thank the Tenney Lapham Neighborhood Association who generously donated $1000 to kick start our Acute Needs Fund! This fund will be used to assist Lapham-Marquette students and families with special acute needs or in times of crisis directly helping our most vulnerable scholars. Any donations made to the PTG through the month of October will be earmarked for the Acute Needs Fund. Thank you for considering a donation, and for all you do to support the PTG and our wonderful schools.

Coming this month! Start your holiday shopping early! Information about the annual REAP fundraiser is in backpacks this week. Celebrate another successful garden season and help prepare the garden for its long winter's nap. The fall garden celebration and workday is scheduled for October 26th. Join us for our next meeting on October 8 at 6pm in the Lapham Auditorium. As always pizza and childcare will be provided. We hope to see you there!
Fall Greetings from the Garden!

Classes are back in the garden, and the first few weeks of fall programming have been quite the success. We started the season making Salsa Verde with freshly harvested Tomatillos. How did we make the salsa one might wonder?? With a bike blender of course! We got exercise and had fun while blending up the best salsa many of us have ever had!

Come join in the fun for our   ANNUAL FALL WORKDAY
                           OCTOBER 26th
                             10 am - 1 pm

*****Each year Ian's pizza uses veggies from the Lapham Garden to top many different pizzas for us all to indulge in at this workday. Come for 30 min. or the entire 3 hours, we just hope to see as many students and their family/friends! The more the merrier.

Keep on growing!

From The Health Office
"Should I keep my child home or send him/her to school?" Parents often wonder whether or not a child is too sick to go to school. Following are some helpful guidelines for making this decision:
A child should remain at home if he or she:
  • Has a fever of 100.0 or greater
  • Has been vomiting or feels very nauseous
  • Has diarrhea
  • Has symptoms that prevent him or her from participating in school, such as: excessive tiredness or lack of appetite, productive cough, headache, body aches, earache, sore throat or rash.
A minor sore throat is usually not a problem, but a severe sore throat could be strep throat even if there is no fever. Other symptoms of strep are difficulty swallowing, headache and stomach upset. Contact your child's doctor as a special test is needed to determine if it is strep.
Keep your child home until his fever has been gone for 24 hours without medication. Returning to school too soon may slow the recovery process and expose others unnecessarily to illness.
How can I prevent my child from getting sick?
  • Teach your child good hand washing, using plenty of soap and water. Proper hand washing should take about 20 seconds (the time is takes to sing "Happy Birthday" twice).
  • Teach your child to cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or their sleeve (at the elbow).
  • Keep your child's environment tobacco free.
  • Keep your child's immunizations up to date (The Centers for Disease Control recommend a flu vaccine for most children ages 6 months and up).
  • Serve a balanced diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables.
Please keep in mind...
  • We can only administer medication (including tylenol and ibuprofen) with a signed order from your child's doctor and a signed permission form from a parent.
  • All prescription medication must be sent in the container labeled by the pharmacy. OTC medications should be in the original packaging.
  • Please do not send your child to school with cough drops.  Instead, encourage lots of water.
And one more thing...Please send extra clothing (including socks) for your child to keep in the locker. Spills, accidents, mud all happen, and we don't always have the right sizes for replacement! Thank you!

Here's to a healthy new school year,
