Dear Lapham Families,

Welcome to the 2018-19 school year!

I hope you are enjoying your summer and that you are excited to return to school. I am so excited to be part of the Lapham family and am anxiously awaiting meeting each and every one of you. I am excited to work with you and your children and welcome your ideas and dedication to our school. I would like to extend a warm welcome to all new families who are joining the Lapham school community.

The staff has already began planning and preparing for your child(ren). They have been planning lessons, attending professional learning opportunities, and preparing their classrooms. They have also been taking some much needed time to rest, relax, and recharge for the coming school year. The office team has been busy preparing for registrations, new families, ordering needed materials, and updating student information. Mr. Dave and his staff have also been busy getting our school ready for you. They have been cleaning, polishing, and helping teachers set up the classrooms.

Our PTG has also been busy planning back to school events, as well as planning for the school year. I would encourage you to join the PTG. They are doing great things for our school community.
Following our new district strategic plan , our mission for this year will be focused on:

  • Every child being on track to graduate college, career, and community ready. We will be focusing on students meeting their literacy and math goals as they learn and apply their learning.
  • The district and Lapham is a place where children, families, and staff thrive. We will be focusing on increasing our attendance, as well as focusing on improving our climate as measured through the student, staff, and family surveys.
  • Our African American youth will excel in school. This means, as a Lapham staff, we will continue to disrupt the barriers that stand in students’ way of attaining excellence. We will work together with our community partners to make this goal a reality.

As we start the new school year, I am looking to continue making Lapham a wonderful place of learning. We continue to be committed to making Lapham Elementary a place to build meaningful relationships and trust.

Yours in Education,

Cathy Prozanski

Meet our New Staff
Jeremy Bulman - Social Worker
"Hi everyone! My name is Jeremy Bulman and I am thrilled to be serving as the school social worker at Lapham this year. I have lived in Madison for the past three years, and a couple of my previous experiences have included working at James C. Wright Middle School last year and at Vera Court Neighborhood Center. I am excited to get to know my colleagues and start building relationships with the wonderful Lapham students!

My wife and I both grew up in Minnesota but are more and more appreciating everything Wisconsin, from eating far more cheese curds to cheering on the Packers on Sunday. My wife is completing her PhD in Environmental Chemistry at UW-Madison. During this summer we have been quite busy camping, going to sporting events, and appreciating as many new restaurants as we can find. My personal interests include anything athletic (soccer, biking, frisbee, running), political and social awareness and action, and mindlessly laying on the couch flipping through shows on Hulu and Netflix without finding anything to watch (I am very interested in finding a new show I actually like if anyone has recommendations!!)

I can't wait to get started this fall and am looking forward to a great year!"

Naomi Snortum - Art
Hi, my name is Naomi Snortum. I am one of the art teachers here at Lapham Elementary and the art teacher at Capital High School right upstairs! I grew up just a stone's throw from Madison in Deerfield, Wisconsin with my mom, dad and 4 siblings. I moved to Milwaukee after high school to attend the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee. I always knew I wanted to teach art, and through my studies at UWM I discovered that I had a passion for metalsmithing as well. I received two BFA degrees from UWM, one in Art Education and another in Jewelry and Metalsmithing. I loved living in Milwaukee during my college years but the Madison area will always have a special place in my heart and I'm so glad to be back.

Jorge Alva - Bilingual Resource Specialist (BRS)
Hello, my name is Jorge Alva-Huerto. I am from Lima, the capital of Perú. I lived in Madison since 2002. I am a Spanish BRS at Lapham and Marquette. I took a leave last school year and went to live in Oaxaca, Mexico.

I love my job because I think that the world is indeed becoming a global village, where there is an increasingly crucial need for all of us to communicate and understand one another.

I’m very excited to be back in the Madison School District and to work with the amazing staff at Lapham Elementary.

When I’m not at school I like to bike and go out to listen to live music.
