Plan Ahead When Consuming Alcoholic Beverages!

With spring approaching, we would like to remind everyone to plan ahead and do not drink and drive. Pictured above - In the early morning hours of Sunday February 18th, 2024, the midnight tour of the Larchmont Police Department discovered that a vehicle traveling on Boston Post Road, had become airborne after striking a snowbank which was in front of a low concrete wall. The accident took place in front of the Larchmont Village Hall parking lot. Fortunately, the driver was found to be uninjured and was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.

We remind everyone to plan ahead when consuming alcoholic beverages. Arrange a taxi or designate a sober driver before going out. If you have any concerns about parking your car, please reach out to your local police department. Our police desk phone is 914-834-1000.

The New York Metropolitan area has seen an increase in the crime of “check washing.” This crime occurs when a criminal obtains a written check, usually through the mail, and alters the payee and check amount. Criminals have become very proficient in erasing ink on checks, and the forgery is generally not detected by banking institutions. This crime is has now become very common and law enforcement is working with the US Postal Inspector to combat it. The following are steps you can take to protect against being victimized:

1. Pay your bills online. “As long as you’re not on a public Wi-Fi connection, paying bills online is safer than a check through the mail,” says Amy Nofziger, AARP’s director of fraud victim support. “Your bank account and the payment systems for your bills are encrypted.”

2. Deliver your mail to a post office. Don’t leave envelopes containing checks in your own mailbox or in outdoor USPS collection boxes after the last pickup time, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service recommends. Best bet: Take your letter to your nearest post office during business hours and either hand it to a clerk or slide it through an outgoing mail slot inside the building.

3. Use a pen with blue or black non-erasable gel ink. Gel ink soaks into paper and may be more difficult to remove than ballpoint pen ink, according to authorities.

4. Don’t let delivered mail sit in your mailbox. Grab your mail every day, as close to the delivery time as possible. If you’ll be away, ask a trusted friend to collect it or have the post office hold it until you’re back home.

5. Monitor your bank account. Don’t wait for your monthly statement. Go online every few days to review account balances and look at checks drawn against them.

6. Report incidents quickly. Contact your bank as soon as possible after suspicious activity; banks are generally required to replace funds stolen via fraudulent checks, but only if the scam is reported within 30 days of the date of your bank statement. Also, contact the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and credit reporting agencies.

Outside Electrical Safety!

If you see fallen power lines or damaged electrical equipment, call 911 or 1-800-75-CONED (1-800-752-6633) immediately. Do not touch it or try to fix it yourself.

Stay away from transmission line towers, utility poles, substation fences, and any other facility marked with "Danger High Voltage" signs.

For more information please click here.

Manhole Safety

Most manhole fires are weather related. A mix of melting snow and road salt, or extreme hot weather, can cause electrical equipment in manholes to smoke or catch fire.

Manhole covers weigh between 70 to 300 pounds. Many are vented to allow gases to escape, rather than build up in the manhole, helping prevent explosions.

Keep pets away from lampposts, grates, and manhole covers, especially when it is cold and wet.
