Large Animal Clinic Welcomes New Farrier

Lance Yohe, CJF, is the new farrier for the UC Davis veterinary hospital’s Large Animal Clinic. Yohe has been a farrier for more than 30 years. He completed his farrier education at the Eastern School of Farriery in 1993 and became a Certified Farrier (2014) and a Certified Journeyman Farrier (2015) through the American Farrier’s Association (AFA). An active member of AFA since 2008, Yohe served as the regional director from 2017-23 and on the executive board from 2017-22. He also served as director and vice president of the Western States Farrier Association from 2008-16.

Equine Health Symposium Open to Public

The Equine Health Symposium will be held March 8 at UC Davis. Presented by the Large Animal Clinic, Equine Medicine Club, Latinx Veterinary Medical Association, and the Northern California Association of Equine Practitioners, the event offers a full day of client-centered equine education in both English and Spanish. Topics covered in the English-speaking stream include emergency preparedness; assisted reproductive strategies; wounds, street nails and trauma; colic; and foals. Topics in the Spanish speaking stream include reproductive management of the mare and stallion; common neurologic and neuromuscular diseases and prevention; and commonly used medications and their potential side effects. Wet labs on injection techniques, distal limb anatomy, and foaling will be available in the afternoon.

UC Davis Experts Educate Public and Industry about Avian Flu

As highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) continues to spread throughout the world, including on California dairy farms recently, experts on the subject from the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine have taken great strides to educate the public and industry partners on the subject. Additionally, several faculty members participated in UC Health Grand Rounds on February 19 to address the subject in a one-hour HPAI webinar.

Dr. Pouya Dini Appears on Plaidcast Podcast

Dr. Pouya Dini of the Equine Reproduction Service appeared on The Plaid Horse’s podcast “Plaidcast” to discuss equine reproduction and the advancements taking place at UC Davis, in particular the first successful use of frozen-thawed sperm for in vitro fertilization production of equine embryos.

Large Animal Faculty Members Win Awards

Congratulations to Professor Nicola Pusterla and Professor Emeritus Joan Dean Rowe on their recent national awards from the veterinary community. Dr. Pusterla won the Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health Advancement in Equine Research Award, which supports veterinary research that results in practical applications for insights into important equine infectious and noninfectious diseases. Dr. Rowe won the George McConnell Award, which recognizes a small ruminant practitioner for extraordinary service.
